The eggs were cooked to perfection, the tuna was fresh and generous, and the coffee was so good I got another one to take with us on our walk through the park. If you're familiar with the businesses along Cortelyou, you know that one guy owns a number of them, that they all have a similar vibe, and that he iterates on the vibe of any given location a number of times. Usually the vibe is this: bright, airy, cafe featuring breakfast plates, many of them vaguely Mediterranean, with continuous additions made to the menu announced via large sign print outs taped up all over the walls and windows of the space. While he's tested out a burger spot, an ice cream concept, his most successful business has to be Cafe Madeline, directly next door to this here Atelier December. With Atelier December, and with Victorian Cafe over on Coney Island Ave and Cortelyou, he's pretty much replicated this formula with much success, as it was packed on the Monday afternoon I visited. Unique to this menu are the pancakes, which come in the flavors pistachio, hazelnut praline, lemon zest, and coconut. I opted for the coconut and it was the best thing on my table. The turmeric fried eggs plate I got sounded promising but was decidedly mediocre and way way oversalted. The cardamom latte was delicious. Atelier December was a pleasant and chill late brunch spot on a Saturday. We were seated on the back patio, which had a calm atmosphere. I got the Lox and Loaded Toast, which was toasted sourdough topped with labneh, smoked salmon, pickled red onions, capers, and green onions. It was also served with a small green salad on the side. Overall, it was wonderfully visually appealing and bright. It was also very tasty! Although this place is a bit pricey I feel like my meal was great and worth the price. You order up front at the counter and the servers bring your food to you at your table. My partner got the Eggs Benny Florentine and felt that there was too much spinach and it threw off the balance of the dish, and it was a bit underwhelming. I really wanted to like Atelier December. Truly. The name is gorgeous, the interior looks like it's trying its best... but the food and experience? Absolutely not. I ordered the French omelet, which sounded lovely until it arrived. It was bland, the eggs were runny, and the only edible part of the plate was the potatoes. So yes, I essentially paid $18 for potatoes. Gourmet, I guess? But honestly, that wasn't even the biggest disappointment. We showed up early specifically for the baked goods, and the croissant tasted like it hadn't met an oven in at least two days. That's a shame for a place that sells itself on pastries. My husband ordered eggs Benedict, and even that fell flat. The English muffin was thin and flat--basically the opposite of what it's supposed to be. And then there's the ventilation. This place had bad airflow under the previous owners, and somehow, with the new name and refreshed decor, they managed to keep that part exactly the same. Impressive consistency, at least. So yes, Atelier December got a new name and a little interior glow-up, but unfortunately, none of the actual quality improved. read more

What a cute and quaint place to have a cup of coffee, tea or a glass of wine or even something to eat. I really enjoyed visiting Atelier December. It is a new spot in the neighborhood so I would like to say I got there pretty early and I was very much pleased with the service and the food. The location was really clean. There is parking outside, but you have to pay a meter or around the corner there's residential parking so parking wasn't bad at all. It is a busy area as there are other coffee shops, and Businesses around, but it was a really good experience just sitting down and relaxing after a Pilates class. I had the turmeric chai latte and it was really good. I could've used a little bit more sweet, but given that I had turmeric in it I understand why it wasn't overly sweet. It was well-made and they had different options of milk, which is always a plus. I also ordered something to eat and it was turkey bacon eggs, cheese on toast. It was so good very well prepared. The trend of more late night coffee options are definitely affecting Cortelyou Road. This one closes at 10 pm so I can definitely do an all night session there. Because of its proximity to Cafe Madeleine and the aesthetic similarities between them and Victorian up the road (the menu for example), I had to ask if they were company siblings. I was told that the owners are friends so they were some shared design choices. If you were to ask me why one would choose to go this place as opposed to other similar, I would say that they have pasta. They have a level of customization for pasta choices (though they don't do pork so "bacon" is actually turkey bacon). This plus the fact they close relatively later makes it something great for a nice date night. The aesthetic is relatively simple with gold foil adorning the walls. There is a somewhat outdoor patio great for slightly larger groups. There is WiFi available so it is great for studying with all the caffeinated options available. It is not my personal favorite strawberry matcha available on the block but it does good work. Overall I think it is a cute addition to the block with close access to the Q train station. read more

Another great addition to the block! I usually go to Madeline's for brunch, but I enjoy having Atelier December as an option for to-go coffee and matchas. They have a variety of matcha drinks to offer, so far I like their strawberry matcha. I also enjoy their iced chais! Service is polite and fast. Also, the cafe is pretty spacious with even more seating in the back. read more

I was happy to get another neighborhood cafe, besides Madeline's... although they are right next door and I believe owned and/or operated by the same person it's still a nice addition. I've been in several times for their 9 Spice Sticky Chai (if you love an authentic Chai) YOU WILL LOVE THIS ONE! The best Chai in the neighborhood! Easter Sunday I decided to stop in for breakfast! It was pretty empty which was good. I ordered the Chicken "n" Waffles and side of eggs, I substituted the vanilla waffle for cardamom waffle for an extra flair. Here is the skinny on the food: The proportion of waffle to chicken doesn't equate! They need to add a smaller piece of chicken to the dish... the waffle was served room temperature not hot, but was good. The chicken... NO BUENO. There was no flavor. I mean not a drop of salt or pepper or NOTHING. I had two bites and focused on my eggs and waffles. Honestly I should have known not to try Chicken "n" waffles in an establishment like this but i was being optimistic. I would definitely come back as they have a pretty extensive menu and they can't screw everything up, RIGHT?? I also realized they get the fried chicken from the burger place next door... (if I knew this a head of time, I would not have ordered it, because I don't like the food at the burger spot) oh well lesson learned Overall, it's a nice cafe, great diverse playlist, accommodating and pleasant staff, plenty of seating. I would really like to give this place a 3.5. It's pretty good. The baked goods aren't bad. The cooked meals are hit or miss but when they're good, they're definitely good. One significant negative is that the owner is often strolling around and he is incredibly loud. Particularly his laugh could shatter glass. I'm saying LOUD. Someone needs to help him understand people are here to enjoy their meal - this is not his living room. But now that Lea has closed, our options have narrowed significantly. read more

We ordered a couple of toasties- big sandwiches with thick sliced multigrain toasted bread and side of salad. Big portions and reasonable prices. We had mushrooms & three cheeses toasty. So good. The pastrami toasty was good with lean high quality pastrami but it was too thick to my tastes. I personally like pastramis shaved thinly. We had cardamom latte - delicious, and banana lassi thick and yummy. My suggestion to the tosties would be to offer half a portion with a cup of tomato soup - because it would be perfect pairing with good toasted bread and cheese and garlic/turmeric tomato soup on a cold day! read more
