I've read about At-House from some local Japanese magazine when we installed a Japanese style deep tub several years ago, thinking that when our tank goes out, that's the place we would call to change it to a tankless one. Well, that time has come this Tuesday evening. We contacted Hiro through Yelp. He responded promptly and came the next day. Hiro answered our questions clearly and honestly, and he gave us a fair quote. We decided on a medium size Rinnai that has a $225 rebate from SoCal Gas. His team, led by Kevin, came the next day. Our old tank was housed in a tight pantry closet. How it got in there was a myth since they had a hard time getting it pass the opening. We thought about cutting out part of the pantry. But through Kevin's ingenuity and hard work, he and Satoshi finally took the old tank out without a scratch. They worked diligently till the early evening. Our water heater died after 19 years of use. I spent a night trying to learn everything I could about water heaters, and the next day online trying to find someone who really knows tankless systems: not just an occasional installer, but someone who is familiar with all of the major brands and certified by the top-line manufacturers. Most plumbers are only trained on one supplier and rarely install tankless. At House was the only installation/repair place I found in my area with pictured installs of multiple brands and consistently positive reviews. I finally gave them a call around 4pm, and Hiro answered right away. He said he could stop by in about 15 minutes (seriously). It would just be a minimum inspection fee, which could be applied to any repair or replacement. Sure, that would be no problem! It's better than another day without hot water. Hiro arrived just as I cleared out the garage area around our heater. He (like his crew later) was wearing a proper N95 mask. He opened my old system and read the error code -- it was a blown control board that probably wouldn't be worth the cost of repairing. I agreed. He then looked at the existing venting and talked to me about comparable sizing and water demand, before recommending a Rinnai condensing model. I was a little surprised by that, but he explained that the newest Rinnai models have a 2" venting feature that allows a pipe to be fed up through my existing (old code) pipes and out above my roof. The other models, which are also good, would require a new 4" vent installed to match the current code. Awesome, I never would have thought of that. He suggested a mid-range size would match my current use requirements, but I wanted the larger model just in case. No problem. He quoted me the same price for the unit as advertised online and an incredibly reasonable amount for plumbing and labor. I asked when they could install. Hiro said "tomorrow, about 9am". Yes! Two of his crew would show up first and he would join later to do the second-story roof pipe install. They all knew their stuff. They worked as a team, did a careful and clean install, used the best parts, and were considerate of us the entire time. The only complication was a custom pipe to route a condensation line to my laundry drain, which had to be carefully routed around a dryer vent. The whole install was done in about 5 hours, with Hiro and two of his crew installing, and another person delivering components, lunch, ladders, etc. All I had to do was open and close taps inside the house, just to avoid the need for the crew to come inside. Hiro even painted the new exhaust pipes on the roof the same color as the existing ones (an HOA requirement) without me asking. A normal plumber would have charged me twice as much just for the labor. The entire experience was excellent. Our new Rinnai RU199iN system has been running a week now and has zero problems, no leaks, no weird noises, and considerably more hot water than with my last system. read more

You've got to give credit where credit is due. I called these guys about repairing my Takagi tankless water heater. They called me back within 10 minutes. I explained what the trouble was and they said they would arrive within 2 hours. Much to my surprise, the technician was here in under an hour. I explained again what the trouble was an what I had done to troubleshoot the problem. He seemed to understand. He looked at the heater for couple of minutes and asked me to turn on the hot water. So I did. Fiddled around for a couple more minutes and asked me to turn it off. He went to his truck and came back with a cable. He plugged it in and asked me to turn on the hot water again. Voila!!! Hot water was running again. He explained what had gone bad, said it would be a week or so to get the right replacement. $30 for the part and $300 for the labor. I thought that was expensive but certainly less than other guys had quoted in several scenarios. I paid $100 for the visit, which was then credited at the time of repair. When they came back, they were very flexible on scheduling. It was a different technician that came back to do the repair. He got right to work. It took him a couple hours to perform the complete repair. He literally gutted the whole water heater. I'm pretty handy around the house, and let me tell you, this would not be a DIY project. I wish I had taken a picture of the dismembered heater. Not for the faint of heart. Long story, short, it took him 2 hours for the job, and I paid an additional $180 for the repair. That's a total of $280 for 2 visits and about 2.5 hours of labor, and includes the cost of the part. The guys are awesome in customer service, speedy, and reasonably priced. Who says you can't have the Holy Trinity? Good, Cheap, and Fast!!! read more

Well, that was easy. I called this morning and they were by before noon. I have Noritz tankless water heater and we have been getting intermittent shutdowns with an error code 90. It rarely happened to me but often happened to my wife right as she was rinsing out the conditioner. It sucks to rinse off in cold water. And it's embarrassing to tell house guests to let us know when the goes cold so we can reset it. I delayed thinking that I was going to be able to fix it, and hoping the cleanup of the igniter I did may possibly make a difference -- it did not. Anyway, he spent about an hour and cleaned everything out and adjusted the manifold gas pressure which was quite a bit off on the low end and he mentioned could have been a contributor to the error code 90 shutdowns. Now we are back to hot water without fear. (Note: My original installer was probably the cause of the poor adjustments. This would make the fourth thing he failed us on.) read more

Excellent, prompt, honest service! The pilot light on my water heater kept going off. Chris came out, identified the problem part, and told me he did not have the proper replacement part because my heater is so old. A lesser company would have tried to sell me a new water heater then and there. Instead, Chris got curious, took apart the malfunctioning piece, determined the part was gunked up, and worked carefully to unclog it. Then, he put the part back together with a new feeder line and reinstalled it into my water heater. Voila! My heater is working again...and the pilot light no longer goes off. Chris let me know I was lucky he was able to fix the part. Indeed! I feel VERY lucky I called At House. My wife and I feel so fortunate to have finally found At House and Hiro. This company is all about great service and value. We designed our house with radiant heating 15 years ago(still not prevalent in SoCal) and the mechanical engineer specified a boiler, HTP Munchkin, that provided hot water for both heating and domestic use. The Munchkin, a fairly new product back then, had design flaws and has been out of production for a few years now. Every time it had an issue we'd lose both heating and hot water, which sucked in the winter, so we finally decided to replace it. We took our time researching and At House was the most helpful and patient company in leading to our decision to replace the original boiler with a Rennai tankless water heater for domestic and a Navien boiler for heating. In addition we added a water softening system. The total price came out to be half of what some of the companies wanted for just putting in another boiler! The work was done with such high efficiency, workmanship and cleanliness we're still in a bit of disbelief. I'm writing this review not only to show our appreciation for Hiro and At House for the great work but to also warn everyone out there - especially if you also have radiant heating like us - to watch out for companies that want to take advantage of the situation. When we first started looking for a company to help us we were recommended a plumbing contractor/mechanical engineer that specialized in custom homes in the Newport area and claimed to be the expert in radiant heating. They charged us $500(including drive time) just to come diagnose our original boiler then wanted up to $9,000 to fix it or $16,000 to replace it with another boiler from the same manufacturer! They refused to break down the cost and pretty much said "good luck" on the phone when we questioned the price. Another company came for free then gave us a quote for $15,000 to install the Navien boiler that we ended up getting with At House. Like I mentioned, At House got us everything plus water softening system for around half the price - material and labor. We'd recommend At House and Hiro to everyone. read more

Taking showers was a nightmare with my tankless water heater. Hot water would only last for 3 minutes then turn cold. With 2 teenagers that I had to remind to take showers, this only gave cause for them to slack even more. I couldn't blame them, we were miserable. I'd run late in the mornings waiting for the water to turn hot again, upwards for 7 minutes. I had a popular plumbing company I found on Yelp and used them for 6 years. They never completely solved the problem. What they charged me each year for a reoccurring problem lead me to look elsewhere. So I called At House based on their reviews and received a decent quote. Kevin with At House came out to our home in April of this year and solved our nightmare hot water issue. Although he came later than the original appointment time, he called beforehand and explained it was due to an internal issue. Upon arrival he got straight to work. Kevin explained what he was doing while he worked. He talked about what the different mechanisms do to provide the hot water. He also told us what the proper color of the flame should be and what to look for. Once he took out our burner Kevin showed us how filthy it was which told us the other popular plumbing company had never cleaned it properly. Very professional and best rates!! I have been having issues with my tankless water heater and I called the maker to ask about the error code I was getting. They recommended I contact someone who is familiar with our tankless water heater and gave me a couple contacts in the area. I had been using a company for routine maintenance but they couldn't tell me what was wrong and they quoted me prices (about replacement of water heater and different job that needed to be done) that I later found were almost triple the market rate. I contacted both of the numbers that the manufacturer gave me.
