Review of AST Plumbing (Authorized Contractor for First American Home Warranty)
Summary (my experience & opinion): AST Plumbing--an authorized contractor for First American Home Warranty (FAHW)--came for a drain stoppage. They labeled my sewer line as having a "belly" and reported that to FAHW, which led to a claim denial. I was not given camera footage or measurements to substantiate the diagnosis, and the stoppage wasn't cleared. I then hired another licensed plumbing company that said there is no belly, hydro-jetted the line, and restored flow the same day. In my opinion, the way AST handled my issue felt dishonest, misleading, and not focused on actually fixing the problem.
What Happened
AST Plumbing (FAHW authorized) diagnosed a "belly" and reported that as the cause to First American Home Warranty.
I received no camera video, still photos, slope readings, or location notes to support the diagnosis.
My FAHW claim was denied and the stoppage remained.
A second licensed company independently assessed the line, stated there is no belly, hydro-jetted, and fully cleared the blockage. Drains have worked normally since.
About the "Belly" Claim (my understanding)
A sewer "belly" is a low spot where water can slow and solids may settle; it should be verified with clear camera evidence (visible pooling at a documented footage distance) and, ideally, grade/slope information.
In my understanding, a minor low spot by itself is not automatic proof of the cause of a full stoppage. Many systems function despite small irregularities; and toilets have built-in traps that hold water by design--that's normal and not the same as a sewer "belly." I expected proof and a real clearing attempt before concluding there was a structural defect that would deny coverage.
My Concern About Warranty-Contractor Incentives
Based on what I experienced, I believe some contractors working with home warranty companies may be incentivized--consciously or not--to cite explanations that tend to trigger claim denials. To me, it felt like the priority was collecting the service-call fee and filing a denial-triggering label, rather than resolving the stoppage. The fact that a second company contradicted the diagnosis and cleared the line the same day reinforced my view.
Work Ethic, Transparency & Honesty
The quick label without evidence shared to me, no resolutive work, and the denial that followed made the experience feel misleading and, in my opinion, dishonest. This raised serious concerns for me about professionalism and integrity.
What I Expected vs. What I Got
Expected:
A genuine attempt to clear the line first (snaking or hydro-jetting as appropriate).
Transparent documentation if a major defect is claimed (camera file, stills, footage distance, notes).
Coordination aimed at solving the immediate stoppage, not just reporting a cause that blocks coverage.
Received from AST Plumbing:
A quick "belly" label, no lasting resolution, no evidence provided to me, and a First American Home Warranty claim denial.
Advice to Other Homeowners
Insist on evidence: Ask for the camera video, still frames, the precise footage distance of any pooling, and written notes--before any report goes to FAHW.
Request clearing first: Have them attempt mechanical clearing/hydro-jetting before concluding there's a structural defect.
Verify coverage impacts: Confirm with FAHW how the stated cause will affect approval or denial before it's submitted.
Get a second opinion: If a costly defect is claimed without proof you can review, bring in another licensed plumber.
Bottom Line
I cannot recommend AST Plumbing based on this experience. Another licensed company disputed their diagnosis, hydro-jetted, and solved the problem promptly. I value contractors who document findings and prioritize actually clearing the stoppage; that's not what I experienced with AST Plumbing. read more
