Disappointing lack of communication and professionalism My experience with AHS was extremely frustrating. Communication was poor to nonexistent, and when concerns were raised, the response felt dismissive and retaliatory rather than collaborative. Interactions involving Danielle Mania and Mike Salmond left me deeply concerned about whether animal placements were being handled thoughtfully and with true consideration for safe, appropriate homes. Transparency and accountability were noticeably lacking. While Bob Berenbach and Jerry Rosenthal may not have been directly involved, they absolutely need to be aware of how situations like this are being handled, as it reflects poorly on the organization's leadership and mission. Based on my experience, I would urge caution when working with this shelter. read more

This shelter is absolutely horrendous. The shelter manager Mike does not care about the animals nor does the ownership team. Volunteers work endlessly to save these animals. I saw a dog drugged who could barely stand or interact with me and it was very concerning to me. When i questioned the staff on what I believed was a very high dog they turned their heads on me and changed subject. Then the dog disappeared never to be seen again. I am almost certain the dog was euthanized while I was there. I heard a worker say to another we have a dead dog but when they saw me walking thru Kennel they got silent. This is a very bad place and needs to be inspected and the dogs saved from what they are enduring in a cruel manner. Kennels peeling paint, dogs in ice cold wet damp kennels and cold floors. They are living a slow and cruel life to euthanasia. It is harboring illness and it is SAD read more

The facility is overcrowded, the animals look miserable, no toys, blankets, no space in cages to move around. There is not enough staff to care for the animals and help the clientele. The facility in certain areas is way to noisy and the heat level is insane. read more

I found AHS through Pet finder, I was looking for a specific type of cat a tuxedo. I had one about 18 years ago and he was the best. The cat I originally came in for was not a good match. Marcos the cat keeper who was very nice said I have the perfect cat for you. He introduced me to at the time Meu she came up to me immediately and wanted to play. We both chose each other at that exact moment. Unfortunately I could not take her at the point she had to get spayed. Those few days felt like a lifetime lol but I came back did my paperwork and waited for them to bring her out. Happy to say it has been a week and half and we are bonding and she is learning her new name Dream. Can't thank the staff enough for the smooth transition to getting her. A TRAUMATIC experience to say the least. I went to the shelter with the intention of adopting a kitten and found the perfect baby boy to bring home. I was told he was FIV+ but was assured it was safe to bring home to my other cat and he'd live a long happy life. He wasn't neutered yet so I was initially made his foster mom until his appointment the following week when I could adopt him. I spent that week bonding, cuddling, and becoming immensely attached. When I brought him in for his appointment to get neutered, I was told it could take 2-3 hours and they would rerun his bloodwork. Mind you he had been there since October (it's now Jan) and no additional bloodwork had been ran since he was brought in. Hours had gone by with no update so I called the shelter only to transferred directly to the vet to be given heartbreaking news. They had messed up his initial bloodwork and said he was actually FELV+ and no longer adoptable because I have another cat at home. Come to find out it's a highly contagious fatal condition with a low life expectancy!!! I not only put my other cat at risk of the disease by being allowed to bring him home in the first place but also had to process the fact the cat I anticipated being mine forever was no longer coming home with me. While I understand the holidays are the busiest time, it is absolutely unacceptable for a situation like this: messing up the blood test, initially assured he would live a long happy life with me and my other cat, letting me bring him home and possibly exposing my cat to FELV, AND not calling me to update me on the situation. In addition to what I previously wrote, this shelter was either uncooperative or unresponsive when it came to an inquiry from Home Again to register a microchip number to me. I made two phone calls to do it with Home Again and never heard back from them so it leads me to believe that the idiot that adopted this dog and kept her for five months and did not want her back when she turned up stray was still the registered owner with Home Again, So, I took the rabies certificate for the dog with the microchip number and included it with the enrollment form and mailed it to Home Again. Hopefully, this does the trick. read more

For TINTON FALLS LOCATION: What a complete disservice these people do for the animals that are in need of deserving homes. The women at the front desk are a absolute waste of resources and need a lesson on customer service, a big dose of compassion and a reality check on "the law". The process of adopting a cat started this morning - a phone call and inquiry to a specific kitten available online. An application was filled out and completed and within moments we were told the kitten had gotten "three applications this morning" later to be asked - would you like to come see the kitten today (in two hours). We organized a household and dressed two, now very eager, children and started a drive that was well over an hour. Full disclosure : this process was today, 4/18/20 during NJ COVID quarantine. At no point during the phone call, email exchanges, or even on their website did they disclose the following : anyone adopting an animal MUST bring the entire family AND the ENTIRE FAMILY MUST BE BROUGHT INTO THE FACILITY -IN MASKS!! The professional women never mentioned these elements were REQUIRED as part of the meeting /screening process. Needless to say, we're off to a great start. Upon arrival, my boyfriend goes in and was informed of the above and was told if all faces weren't covered - we were beat and no one would be allowed in. Also, all of us had to come in - or none at all. At my suggestion - he goes back in to ask for scissors to cut bandana fabric into an extra mask so we could venture in. Only to be told "no sweetheart, it's the law" from a lady in - you guessed it - a fabric mask. To be clear - Gov. Phil Murphy has under order as follows "Workers and customers over 2-years-old are required to wear cloth face coverings unless doing so would inhibit the person's health" All people in our party had access to cloth face coverings and this fabric-mask-wearing woman -who apparently, sits at the right seat of Gov Murphy, felt inclined to turn a family away because we didn't have surgical N95 masks on? I'm confused. Because we asked for scissors ? I'll be awaiting the response to this review explaining the high-quality customer service and nonsensical interpretation of the law during this pandemic crisis just to be able to meet a cat. I'm betting that before a coherent sentence is put together I'll have a new kitten in a loving home from a place that actually looks to put adoption first. read more

As someone who came from a huge public shelter, all of these poor reviews have very high expectations for a public, high volume shelter. If only you can see what goes on. The staff falls in love, they care deeply for any sick or injured animals, and will do anything to save them. No one can save them all. Like all animal shelters these days, this place is overburdened with animals--and especially with the sheer number of people unloading pets they no longer can care for or no longer want. I found an English Springer Spaniel on Petfinder (www.petfinder.com) a couple of years ago, and went to visit him at AHS. He was emaciated and friendly, and I took him home. There are tons of beautiful dogs and cats there; please consider adopting from a shelter, where you can be sure you'll be saving a life. AHS is a proactive organization which does an amazing lot with what they have. They have three locations in New Jersey, including Popcorn Park Zoo, which currently has four tigers--two who had been intended to be used for a canned hunt, and two rescued from a sanctuary that couldn't care for them. (No, the tigers aren't up for adoption.) If you're in or near New Jersey, consider adopting a cat, dog, bunny, or even a parrot from AHS--and never, ever buy a pet from a pet store. read more

This place deserves a shout out to anyone who wants to adopt a cat or dog. I looked in Manhattan for a small shelter dog, and finding them in short supply, came out to visit the Humane Societies in Newark and Jersey City. The Newark location is near the airport in an industrial area. It will not win any awards for location, landscaping or interior design. But the staff and volunteers are dedicated and committed to finding the best home for their wards with the limited resources they have. I'm sure they encounter would-be owners of all ilks and types so if you are legit and have the makings of a good owner, they will work with you to find the pet you want. The building houses many dogs and cats, with large dogs in a large kennel room and the small dogs along with cats in another kennel room. Probably 80% of the large dogs are pit bulls, a sad statement on backyard breeders. The small dogs are usually mixes of poodle, maltese, shih tsu, yorkshire terrier and the like. It's sad to see all the cats and dogs cooped up but the staff is constantly cleaning and taking individual animals out for walks. Most of the animals are strays or surrenders. They might be young or old, completely healthy or have health issues. When you adopt, the dog will be spayed/neutered, get shots, and will have an ID microchip implanted. There is a small vet clinic in the building that does this and the total cost for adoption and medical procedures was around $200. Their website doesn't show all the animals they have and there is lots of turnover, so best bet is to make a trip out there. They get new cats and dogs every day. It's a bit of a haul from Manhattan but for us it was worth it. read more

I will admit the facility is not the cleanest and the location is not the most ideal..but all things considered I have always and will always get my pets from here..(besides that-I don't know too many animal facilities that are super clean)..I got a long haired cat from here the first time..fell in love with her..and had her until she died for about 12-13 years..( I made my moms get her as a teenager..and then when I graduated college and moved out i took her with me..) She bought me nothing but happiness and joy..and would lay on my stomach anytime I was feeling bad..then after she passed.. I bought another cat from here..an all black short haired cat that I named Jax..Originally I wanted a black kitten..but I didn't see any that were all black..he was 8 months..but I automatically fell in love with him because of how much affection he showed me..This cat literally had his own personality that made it easy for me to love him! As mentioned below-the staff will work with you and these pets need a loving home at the end of the day or they will be euthanized :( I've always loved coming here as a kid and now that will not stop as an adult. I only paid $25 for my cat..($50 for shots)..and I would come here again!!! read more

Don't bother volunteering at the shelter in Forked River. They are very suspicious of volunteers and treat them like dirt. They do have a large staff of young people who move quickly, but I've volunteered in other shelters that were grateful for the help. Unfriendly atmosphere and the older woman in the office with jet black hair, around early 50s, incredibly rude and nasty. read more

This is a tremendous animal shelter. To the person who left a review about driving from NYC to Newark for a specific dog.. THEY CAN NOT HOLD A DOG FOR YOU OVER THE PHONE. I mean how dumb do you have to be to leave a 1 star review for an animal shelter cuz a dog got adopted before you got there? "I'm in the rescue field so I put my cape on and introduced myself and assumed I should jump the line ahead of the people who already filled out applications for that specific dog." SMH. This shelter does a whole lot of work with very limited resources. If people truly knew how bad shelters like this needed monetary and drop-off donations, they could do a lot more. This is for the AHS in Tinton Falls NJ. They are liars and so unprofessional. I am in the rescue field and understand how taxing and stressful it can be, however, I've never met such blatant liars as these women there. I was looking for a dog for myself as opposed to the rescue. I found a dog that immediately caught my eye. The next day (Sunday) i called at 12-noon when they opened and they said he was still available and they did have applications, but didn't look at them nor did anyone specific stand out. I told them that I was from a rescue group and identified myself and told them that I would be coming down from NYC (approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. I rented a car, and drove there and arrived at approx 3 pm. I entered and introduced myself only to be told immediately that he had been adopted. To say that I was stunned is an understatement. When I went on their social media (FB) and posted about the situation, they were backtracking, lying, etc. First, they said that they had told me he had someone pending (WHY OH WHY would I rent a car to waste time and money to do this. Then they said they actually had 2 people. Then another woman said they usually check applications on Monday (this was Sunday). After they told me that, i was kind of stunned and left. They then began lying saying that I stormed out! I didn't storm out, I just left quietly after saying "Wow, I just rented a car and drove to see this dog that I was told he was still available." Then the person that I was going back and forth with, Lindsay Papa just kept on lying and tripping up and making up nonsensical posts about how grateful we should be the dog got adopted, but that wasn't the matter at hand. People that lie in their jobs should just leave and look for a new avenue of work. The poor professionalism shown that day is a shame and this person should be let go from her job. They make it hard to adopt a dog in need. read more

My mother used to take me here, when I was little, to see the animals. They were accommodating to a young girl who loved animals. They used to have a parrot in the waiting area (early 1970's) that cursed. It was amusing. Glad to see this animal shelter is still providing services. I've been here several times originally for emergency visits when my usual vet was booked, but the caring staff and doctors have made this a vet that I use regularly. Shih Tzu's have eye problems. Their eyes stick out more than most dogs so they are prone to corneal ulcers, dry eyes, etc. The vets here are always accommodating, nice and work to heal your pet vs. trying to up-sell you on medicine that you don't need just to make a buck. We went through a rather costly (gas, time, and tolls, namely) process of trying to adopt their Tibetan Mastiff, Leo at the Forked River location. In spite of explaining in great detail our living situation and plans for him, we were denied. My fiancé and I have a good amount of experience with giant breed dogs (we both had Newfoundlands in the past, and my fiancé actually had one of Michael Vick's fighting pitbulls that he successfully rehabbed). We told them that I don't work (so I'm home 90% of the time), how big our yard, apartment, and fence are (we live on Long Island in Queens County, and our apartment is actually positively massive for what we pay in rent and for NYC standards. Our downstairs area can easily fit at least 2 shoebox studio apartments) with every visit, and explained that we have the beach nearby and a dog park with 10' high fences segregating different areas - an agility course, a main play area, and a 3rd for "problematic" dogs who can't be around other dogs/people. They could also very clearly see our boxer is a very loving, extremely happy, and well-adjusted girl who would have been a perfect sister for him (Leo and our Penny got along great). She's hyper, but A.) What boxer isn't? & B.) we've done a ton of work with her on some things surrounding that. We told them all of this from the beginning and reiterated all of those things with each visit. They continued to allow us to visit and bond and kind of acted like Leo would be going home with us. Leo really gravitated to my fiancé, roommate, and me and we all bonded rather quickly. They brought him up for a home visit, where he was very obviously quite comfortable (tail down- a sign that he's relaxed), he didn't even really bark all that much or pay a ton of attention to strangers passing by (something they told us he has a habit of doing). When they left, Leo kept pulling his leash trying to get back to us. The handlers had to physically pick him up to put him in the car while he continued to try getting back to us. We were denied. For what seems and feels like BS reasons. Why continue to allow us to visit and make the effort to bring him up for a home visit only to say no in the end, after letting all of us get attached to him? My fiancé and I are very honest people and we could easily admit it if we weren't a good fit for Leo, but we really truly feel that we would have been the best family for him. It's very sad for Leo. He will be 2 in February and bringing him into our home now would have been the perfect time to adopt him and bring him into our home. The foot and car traffic around our place is drastically reduced in the colder months, so we could have really worked with him to get him as adjusted as possiblr in time for Spring/Summer and the crowds that come along with those seasons. Not to mention, we plan to move back home to the South where we will buy a house somewhat out in the country with a much bigger back yard and higher fence than where we are now. It's sad and heartbreaking. The longer Leo stays at that shelter, the harder it's going to be for anyone to adopt him and do any type of social rehabilitation. I really think his "main handler" is attached to him, and doesn't really want to let him go, even though she can't take him home herself apparently. They've essentially condemned this poor, beautiful guy to live in that shelter for the rest of his life. The longer he's there, the worse he's going to get with his wariness of people and whatnot. Eventually, he will become entirely unadoptable- and it WILL be sooner rather than later. I've also heard that this place isn't really a Non-Profit Organization like they claim to be, but that's just hearsay. Could be untrue, but there could be some partial truth to that as well. The employees are largely very friendly, and everyone we spoke to about hoping to adopt Leo was really rooting for us, but yeah. My fiancé and I will never ever attempt to adopt from a shelter ever again. I was hesitant about even trying to begin with, but we fell in love with Leo and decided to try. It's a real shame, but I refuse to be put through this kind of situation ever again. It's (reputable, of course) breeders from now on for us. read more

Knowingly gave us a cat with Feline AIDS. The cat was not segregated from the others, the cage wasn't marked and the person who helped us-- the manager, evidently-- made no mention of the cat's condition. We didn't know until a few months later when we noticed he was having some trouble eating and our vet found that he had five dead teeth, several abscesses and that his gums were falling apart. The gums were so bad that he couldn't be sutured after having his teeth removed and my elderly mother ended up spending about 2500.00 in dental care and antibiotics during the 16 months she had the cat. She had to eventually put it down after a gum infection flooded his bloodstream with parasites, resulting in a severe kidney infection. read more

I used to take my dog here for vet visits and liked them until today. They found a two year old dog. My dog is the mother and I gave him to my friend at 5 months old. This has been my friend for years. Very close...know each other's family. Well I never had any reason not to trust my friend. At 5 months old, of course he had been microchipped by then. He was done by my dog's vet so I was down as owner. I explained that to them and they told me I have to sign a surrender form or face animal cruelty charges. I had no choice. I then got several people willing to take him. Someone locally. Even people willing to drive across the country to adopt him. They told me no. I get there are rules but tbey should consider everything. I can show what type of dog owner I am. My girl, his mother, has more stuff than Paris Hilton. She's in calendars and on YouTube. Give me my grandbaby. I didn't sell him. He's my family. read more

Most of the pets at AHS-Newark are not listed online (not on Petfinder). This shelter has a variety of small dogs. Breeds include terriers--including a Scottish West Highland "Scottie" dog I saw--, Pekingese, shih tzus, chihuaha mixes, pomeranians. The big dogs are mostly pit bull mixes. Of the other breeds, as of a week ago, the shelter houses a cocker spaniel, a yellow lab mix, an old chow/retriever mix and a very old sheltie. A prospective owner can take a dog outside in the front of the building for a quick walk. Be persistent if you're interested in an animal. Many cats and kittens are also available. Unfortunately, the ventilation is very poor. The first time that I visited, the big dog kennel areas smelled awful (but smelled a little better in my return visits). Small dogs are separated from the large dogs, but it would be better if older dogs or non-pit bulls had a quieter area for themselves, since the pit bulls bark constantly whenever someone is walking in their kennel area. I know the AHS does some good work, but this facility could be better. read more

I can't speak to the process of surrendering or adopting an animal, but I did visit Associated Humane in Newark yesterday in a stressful situation, and was grateful to them for their help. I had an injured wild bird that had crashed into a window in downtown Newark, and I had no way to get to Raptor Trust (out in Millington) to drop it off. Raptor Trust suggested I ask the AHS whether they could deliver it. When I showed up at AHS, I was worried because there was so much noise and chaos, but once I explained to the person working the front desk that I had a frightened and very wild bird, and that Raptor Trust had recommended I try AHS, she took the woodcock back to her boss, and he delivered it out to Millington (apparently right away). This amazes me: I imagine everyone working at the AHS is overloaded and overwhelmed, so the fact that someone took the time to help this bird and go on a 40-minute drive was very very much appreciated. So: Donate if you can, adopt if you can (it's clearly a shelter at the edges of what it can hold), and if you can bring a wild animal somewhere specifically for wild creatures, that would be better (less stress for the animal, this shelter is clearly designed for domesticated animals). Also, I believe they *do not* usually accept animals from Newark because of some financial issue between the shelter and the city. read more

Crazy story, My 5-year-old daughter accidentally let our new cat outside when she was letting our dog out and then he disappeared. Reported on the Home Again site that deals with the microchip implanted in your pet. Then three days later I received a call from the shelter without a message. Thought that was strange until I called the number back and got a hold of the manager who had horrible tone with all kinds of strange unwarranted accusations of me being an irresponsible pet owner and you cannot get your cat returned. If my family and I are such bad pet owners, then how is it that we currently have other animals in our household for the past 17 years that are healthy and happy with no issues and we just adopted a dog 6 months ago from a North Carolina shelter that had been hit by a car and lost a leg? Yeah, we are horrible people! Called the Waretown Police where I live and they basically told me once you sign their contract at the point of adoption they can basically do whatever they want based on their bias opinions. Just rude and miserable people to deal with and I feel sorry for the animals that suffer the consequence of such bias perspective on who should and shouldn't be a pet owner. They act as prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner. Do not adopt from Associated Humane Societies/1 Humane Way Forked River, NJ 08731. If you adopt a cat or dog from this humane society and it escapes from your property and you don't call this particular humane society immediately, you will suffer the same consequences of not getting your animal returned if the animal was found through them. Still trying to figure what the point of the Home Again service is for if your animal is found the same day it went missing and the shelter doesn't utilize it. They were waiting on me to call them and read the checklist in their heads of how you should go about getting your lost animal back. Didn't matter that I walked a 6-block radius in my neighborhood going door-to-door looking for this poor cat. All this transpired from when the animal went missing to the unpleasant phone call with the manager in 4 days. Just wow! Way to go Popcorn Park Zoo. Lost a loyal visitor and donator of 8 years forever. read more

I adopted two Chihuahuas on my first visit there on Tuesday and had them two days later. They had many dogs. Online only the pit bulls were listed, but I was showed a small dog room with chihuahuas, a yorkie, terrier mixes, etc. The adoption fees were very reasonable (for me it was $100 per small dog which included spay/neuter surgery, rabies vaccines, flea and worm treatments, a microchip, a collar and leash, and a 90 day guarantee that they can be looked at for free by their vet if they have worms). Everyone I met there was very nice. Volunteers held the dog I already had when I went inside to look at the dogs they had, and helped introduce my dog to the dogs I was interested in. There's a lot of reviews saying that the place smells... well yeah, it's an animal shelter. Not their fault. Strays aren't house trained. This place wasn't any worse than other shelters I've been to. When Toby, one of the dogs I adopted, pooped on the floor they cleaned it up right away. On both days I went there I saw volunteers outside walking and playing with some of the pit bulls, so efforts are being made to exercise them. My only complaint is that I was told the dogs I got were each 3 years old, which I doubted due to the grey on their face, and my personal vet confirmed they were much older (about 7&10). read more

I'm from Manhattan and came to Newark shelter to see a cat (his picture was on Petfinder) yet on interacting saw that cat's personality wasn't for me. They'll let you pick up the cat and hold it and you can tell a lot from this. A staff member who'd only been there 2 days was speaking with me about what I was looking for personality and looks wise. He showed me two more cats and the little boy, who I named Moscato, is the new love of my life! Great cat, very affectionate with no problems. Wonderful no-hassle shelter with good staff. More than half of their dogs are not on Petfinder, you are better off going there and checking the place out, if you are interested in a dog, be persistent I have not had the best experience and actually am not fond of the people who work there, on multiple occasions I've been lied to over the status of a dog, recently was interested in adopting a small dog, 7 day stray was over so she was ready to be adopted , only to find out she had 'owners' and was waiting to get picked up, had to wait 10 days, thankfully in my gut I knew they were lying again, called to follow up next day, only to find out the dog had been transferred to another shelter instead, shame on them for lying, now I am on my quest to find the dog, they also lied to me over the status of a pitbull I was trying to rescue, said he'd been adopted jan 21, when that was impossible since I went feb 5 he was there went back the next day feb 6 and he was gone, I know the poor baby was put down, so shame on them read more

Associated Humane society treats their Dogs and Cats like they should be treated, humanely. And they are very careful who adopts them, which is the correct way to go, after all you do not want the animals going to bad, abusive people. These poor animals have already been abandoned by the people they thought loved them. Dogs give you they whole hearts, when they are broken it really hurts. I found the dog I wanted, but had to wait for the time requirement to find his owner., as well as his discharge from the infirmary. I called, visited on numerous occasions, and submitted my application two days before he was to be discharged. I was assured that the director would contact me. When I didn't hear, I called the next day and was given a run around. Come to find out that the dog was given to the first walk in that saw him after his discharge. Needless to say, I was devastated.
