On the way to Poets House
    Nick A.

Poets House is one of my top 10 favorite places in town to go. I can, and have, spent 5 or 6 hours at a time sifting through endless books with a view of Jersey City and the Hudson in this isolated part of downtown. Located in the shadow of WTC1 and off a cobblestone street behind the public library and potato famine memorial (which is an interesting sight in itself), Poets House offers a huge selection of poetry anthologies, individual pressings and chapbooks. They also have stations and headphones for cassette and record listening of performances and readings. They even encourage visitors to open and explore E.E. Cummings personal writing desk which has been donated to the foundation. I don't know many other places that regularly have events with the likes of Dark Room Collective or offer classes with NY poet laureate Marie Howe. There's nothing quite like it in NYC or the rest of the country for that matter. WIFI is offered and hasn't yet been completely overrun by folks scrambling to use it. On the contrary, they have a number of readily available long tables, armchairs and comfortable sofas for most who are usually reading or writing. Grab a cup of coffee from down the block before heading over to this one-of-a-kind (and FREE!) library to hang and read if you are a fan at all of creative writing or poetry. Either way, you won't go wrong with free.

After standing for a few hours, I really regretted not getting a ticketed seat for myself. So in the future, I'm glad that I have that option. Once you enter The Shed, you take the escalator upstairs to get to the concert hall. At the end of the concert, the doors open and lead you out right next to The Vessel so I thought that was a nice visual perk at the end of the concert. I hope I get a chance to come back and get to walk around the place and see a little bit more of it.

Located in Hudson Yards, it's near the Vessel and other attractions unique to this developed area. Now showing--This World of Tomorrow with Tom Hanks. Theater review: seating was 3 escalator flights up where most seats were good ones. Comfortable folding style chairs with the theater exhibiting good lighting and audio. There was a mobile bar during intermission that offered wine, water and soda for purchase. I didn't see any merchandise for sale. Production review: When I learned Tom Hanks would be performing Off Broadway in "This World of Tomorrow", I was eager to get tickets. Although the production is Off Broadway, the prices were definitely Broadway and no surprise there with headliner Tom Hanks--one of my top favorite actors of all time--in the starring role. The play takes place in the year 2089 and is all about time travel with Hanks' character--Bert--traveling back to 1939 during New York's World Fair. Without giving anything away, the storyline explores themes on falling in love, technology and what makes life meaningful. We really enjoyed the production which runs through December 21. Overall, it received positive reviews. Some were mixed and in my opinion, I thought the play should have been shaved down by 20 -30 minutes (it was 2 hours + 15 min with intermission). As a Tom Hanks fan, it was truly a delightful treat on a holiday weekend.

I remember listening to the immigration stories during those sessions and crying because so many of them reminded me of my own journey, with all the hardship, loneliness, and the long road it took to start over. Walking through the Holocaust exhibits is something I will never forget. Looking at the photos and reading the captions left me completely heartbroken. The pain is something I can't fully describe. This museum honors people who endured the most unimaginable cruelty, and being there forces you to face that history with your whole heart. I've taken my niece and nephews, and we all felt the same deep sadness and respect. My nephew even had his 8th grade graduation there, which makes the place even more meaningful to me. It's a space filled with memory, grief, resilience, and reflection, and it will always hold a special place in my life. It's also helpful to know that admission is free on Wednesdays, which makes it even easier for people to experience this important and emotional museum.

Persian as a language is very rarely taught here and and besides going to NYU for language classes (Columbia is not teaching Persian anymore) you literally have no other options, so I was really glad that I found this online! Rates are affordable (most classes are private and flexible with timing) and the teachers are good and patient at breaking down the grammar, the alphabet as well as introduce cultural aspects of learning the language. All of that translates well into their other programs such as Persian movie night and Persian cooking classes, which are a ton of fun even if you know nothing about the language and/or culture itself. I truly hope this grows into something larger over the years, because given how diverse and multicultural NYC is, I am shocked that this is the only place that strives to provide an authentic Iranian experience to people from other cultural backgrounds such as myself. Even if you don't want to learn a new language because you find it tedious, it's NYC so get out here, make some new Iranian friends and learn something new about another side of the world. Expand your horizons!

NDLB is an incredible 501(c) (3) non-profit and their global mission of rescuing dogs and cats from immense suffering and complete abandonment, along with their exceptional care and concern for each survivor (no matter the gravity of each animal's injuries), is nothing short of outstanding. The dog we happened to adopt is a Japanese Akita Inu and happens to go by the name Romeo because he happened to be saved from slaughter on Valentine's Day (on February 14, 2020). The founder of NDLB , Jeff Beri, and his crew actually risked their lives twice to save our dog. Once (due to the strict Covid-19 Restrictions in China at that time and a second time to challenge the people who were about to slaughter him). I personally found all of the NDLB staff I interfaced with during the adoption process very personable and easy to connect with. More importantly, I found the staff demonstrated great care and concern for their animals throughout the adoption process. While waiting for Romeo's freedom flight to New York, we received multiple videos and photo's along with ongoing communication from the NDLB Chinese staff who were with him daily. The New York staff made sure I (along with my husband), understood all the possible challenges that came with adopting a dog from overseas and wanted to make sure we were up for this type of challenge. All I can say is Romeo has completely changed our family's life. Our family over the years has had three dogs. Romeo was our first overseas adoption, by far, he is the most considerate dog we have ever had the pleasure of owning, and is always looking out for our well-being. One last positive has been, over the past months, being able to maintain on going contact with Romeo's team in China, and being able to send photos and videos of him here having all sorts of fun in the USA. (See Romeo enjoying sunbathing below).
