My local!!! I am giving this EXCELLENT library 4 stars because the city or some benefactor really needs to throw in for some essential facilities improvements. The power of this Library is its desk staff and Children's Librarian. I am a lifelong New Yorker and a reader of books. I have been bringing my child here since infancy, and after four years away, the desk staff remembered her. She is 12 now, and volunteered at the Library throughout the summer. She was given appropriate tasks, trusted to make good decisions, and respected for who she is.
The Librarian, Jay, is top drawer. I was shocked to see a review suggesting that all children are not treated fairly at Ham Fish. I hardly ever write reviews, but I had to jump in on this one. I find this library to be safe, engaging, and welcoming. All this within dire budgetary constraints and other challenges. I am always able to get a suggestion for what to read next, and usually a great conversation about books or anything. From any of the NYPL staff. I find them helpful, and interested in making their branch better for all users.
Ham Fish doing their best, and you should stop by and borrow a book.
As with any place: if you treat them well, they certainly will treat you well in return.
And...it's named Ham Fish, for goodness sake! That's hilarious!
P.S. in the summer, there is a free Olympic sized Swimming Pool around the corner!! read more
