Very convenient place that doesn't feel like youre in the Bronx. I actually prefer this one to the Midtown library on 42nd n 5th ave as that one gets packed with homeless, stinky and crazy people on the computer/laptop floors. Since it's so big security sometimes might take a while before spotting the disturbance. It also doesn't feel as clean. This one, since it's fairly new looks pretty clean and if you have kids they have a children's only floor with computers with games and books for children. The only problem with this Bronx Library as with most NYC public libraries is that you get the occassional homeless guys or guys that talk to themselves on the computer floors, but they do have security on each floor making sure that people keep it quiet and don't disturb others. They also have an auditorium and have events there, which I haven't seen it.

With a nice selection of books, periodicals, and videos, this location serves the community extremely well. The attractive new building greatly expands and wonderfully refines the public space available for adult, youth, and child patrons. Upstairs there is abundant natural light, tables and computer stations, as well as a few comfy chairs to read books, magazines, or newspapers. Having discarded the tattered and dated collection from the old building across the street, there are many brand-new books and DVDs shelved in a compact area, including books in many languages and graphic formats. Completely wheelchair accessible, there is also a nice stone staircase leading to the children's area downstairs that is also naturally lit and even features a small area with huge pots of bamboo, a huge rug area, and even some natural rock features that are likely to appeal to squirmy toddlers. Again, there are tables and computer stations as well as many shelves of brand new material. The old library staff was retained and seems to be adjusting well to the new digs. My only complaint is that Bloomberg's latest budget has cut hours. It would be nice to see this gorgeous facility open later and on Sundays.

There are also computers available for people who don't have access to one. Every month, there is at least one event like book discussion or art related project. The library is one of the few things NYC gets right and to be able to check-out books, DVD's & music cd's as well as download e-books, all for free (ok, our taxes do count!) is a wonderful thing. It can get loud during the school year and I've personally witnessed kids on many occasions being very disrespectful towards the staff and other patrons but you CANNOT blame the library/staff itself for that. There sadly is a lack of respect for people in a position of authority these days and that is a clear reflection of the parents or guardians of the disrespectful kids. That is not a reflection of the staff whatsoever and I applaud them for the work they do in sometimes very trying conditions.
