POOR SERVICE, EXCELLENT FOOD. We have been customers of Asparagus for sometime now. The food is always great, but we've found the service to be spotty. Today's experience was no different. Excellent food, but the server was always in a hurry. She was doubling as the bartender. We never saw her again after she served us the food. We had to go get her at the bar to get our check. As a minimum we expect the server to check on us once after food is served to make sure everything is ok. Not the case on out last two visits. read more

I've been coming here since they opened. Many years! For a few years it was my go to fav Thai place. Then, they really slipped. So many bad experiences. I kept giving them chances as they are a beautiful restaurant and near my home. I left reviews & updated my reviews when they improved. I was hesitant to update again, but today was just bad. My husband Always orders nutty chicken because it's consistently good. He's witnessed all of my order fails. Today I got the spicy noodles lunch special. It said rice noodles with assorted vegetables & jalapeños. The menu item below it said wide rice noodles & wasn't spicy. I thought maybe I received that when he brought it out because it had wide noodles, no jalapeños, and not spicy but sweet or tangy. He insisted I got the right one and offered to bring jalapeños. It's not the same when a dish isn't cooked all together with the flavors. Also, noodles were moosh. My at home stir fry dishes are so much better than what this "upscale" has been serving me. I cannot tell you how many times my dish is missing ingredients or had the wrong ingredients. Always an excuse or apology, but it's become a joke for us that it's never correct. If it tasted good, I'd be ok with it. Also, I haven't ordered the tofu in a while, but only because they do a terrible job preparing it. Let's start by saying this one the best Thai restaurant I been too. The food was spot on !! The flavors , the portions and the variety was great. We tried the Mango and lobster roll; delicious. We initiated the evening with a bottle of champagne, Pol Roger, priced appropriately, and very delicious. The service was friendly and over all acceptable. Let me first say I've eaten there many times. After today, I probably will never eat there again. I spent $85 on a carryout order that included pineapple rice, pho, calamari and avocado egg rolls. The chicken in the pineapple rice was dry. The rice was also dry and just did not have the flavor that it used to. The calamari was greasy and (soggy because they did not ventilate the container.) I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was extremely disappointing from start to finish. I invited my friends out to eat with me, and they each drove at least an hour to get there, which made the experience even more frustrating and embarrassing given how everything turned out. First, we were shocked to find that a 20% charge was added to each individual bill for a party of just five people. Altogether, that came out to about $60 in automatic gratuity for the table, even though each person already spent between $75 and $140. When we asked about the charge, our server told us it was not a tip and that it would be "shared," which was misleading. It later became clear that this was, in fact, a gratuity--yet he still accepted an additional tip on top of that. That lack of transparency felt dishonest and left a bad impression. Service overall was very poor. One person in our party didn't receive their food until much later than everyone else, which meant we couldn't even enjoy our meals together. On top of that, the waiter barely checked on our table, so it was difficult to address any issues in a timely manner. To make matters worse, my order was not prepared or packaged the way I requested. I specifically asked for extra sauce, and it was not included. Small details like that matter, especially when the service is already lacking. Overall, between the misleading charges, lack of attentiveness, and order issues--especially after my friends went out of their way to travel so far--this was not a good experience. I hope management takes a closer look at both their service standards and how charges are communicated to customers. read more

Everything went well. I love Asparagus; we dine there about once a month. I really enjoy the Satue platter, and their avocado egg rolls are delicious. We've tried many of their dishes, but the shrimp fried rice, pork shank, scallops with vegetables, lamb chops, and so many more were all fantastic. I also love their ginger pear martini -- so good! Sometimes, they have a band, which is very nice. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, with staff always checking on you. read more

We've gone there for over 10 plus years, it must be under new management. Took my wife there the day before Mother's Day to avoid the crowd. The waitress seemed as though she didn't want to be there, or serving us. We sat in a small room near the bar. A young lady was over served with drinks and became LOUD and Rude yelling and cussing while using slurs. The duck I ordered was dry and I was given sauce to moisten it up and my wife's order was completely wrong and had to be reordered. We were given a new waiter and when I asked what happen to the original waitress I was told by the waiter she had checked out and gone home. I gave him her tip and about 30 minutes later when we were leaving I saw her taking orders at another table on the other side of the place, he had lied. Hibiscus Margarita was delicious with a perfect amount of sweetness. The layout of the restaurant was a bit odd but I think it works for noise reduction. Otherwise it had a classy touch. I came here to celebrate my sister's birthday. It's about an hour drive from the Chicago area. Parking was spacious. It's an upscale Asian restaurant so yes you'll see some items are overpriced compared to the prices at regular Chinese restaurants. We ordered 3 appetizers - seafood rolls, duo cargot, young mountain lamb chops. We ordered 2 entrees - "to die for" pork shank and signature delight. Overall 3.5/5. One time is enough. Service was mid. -seafood rolls - while it is very tasty and crispy, $14 doesn't justify 4 small pieces. For the price you should be able to have 6-8 on the plate. -duo cargot 4/5 - I did enjoy the sauce, shrimp, and escargot on top of the bread. It was delicious. There should be another piece of bread on the plate. -young mountain lamb - this is not worth $22. Pieces are too small and it could have been tender. You need to cook lamb medium rare, this was about medium. -"to die for" pork shank 5/5 - pork belly, pork shank, and egg are cooked beautifully. Taste was phenomenal. Meat was succulent especially when you get further into the pork shank. Taste great with rice. Portion was big -signature delight 5/5 - huge portion for $60. Lobster tail, sea scallops, and shrimp were all present in the dish. Vegetables were fresh and well seasoned. read more

Let me start with the good: I wish I had pictures to pair with my review but I was too busy diving into the amazing flavors to stop a snap a photo - a yelp no-no of course but you gotta go and see what I mean! We started with the escargot and it was so flavorful and perfectly portioned for our party of two. I ordered an espresso martini which had the perfect balance of boozy and coffee flavor. For my main dish I opted for the red curry with shrimp which was a large portion and arrived hot, I wish it came with a bit more rice but we ordered a little extra on the side. Now for the downside: somehow our party of two got mixed in the server shuffle and as we noticed several parties that arrived after us get served and had their food delivered as well as getting their check before we even received our appetizer. We place our whole order with one server and was never checked on and had to get another servers attention only to discover nothing was entered in the system. For it to be branded as a luxury and upscale restaurant that is unacceptable especially for the price point which is why it received the reduction. read more

I have been going here to eat for almost as long as they have been open. My favorite by far is the seafood panang but thats not to say that I have ever had anything I was disappointed with. For beef its the Grand Marnier beef stew. For vegans the Nutty stir fry rocks. All the appetizers are a great start. These are just a couple off the top of my head. November 7th was my father's 80th birthday and although I attempted to make a reservation with event planner Kate Witte in September, I was unaware that I needed to make a down payment by October 17th in order to secure the room as she mentioned the day would not be very busy because it was a Thursday afternoon. I never heard back from her that I might lose the booking or how the process worked. Nevertheless, due to the fact that my father is blind he is not completely comfortable going out to eat these days but decided last minute to go. So I called thinking we still had the reservation. The manager could not find it but it wasn't a big deal because we only had a party of five. However, I mentioned that we were a cake to celebrate his 80th birthday. She said this would not be a problem but they just couldn't store it in the freezer and they would give us a larger table to accommodate the cake. When we arrived we were given a round table that barely fit the cake and our party. My mother was very upset. The manager explained that she spoke to me about the arrangements for the cake. This was not what I had in mind and I did tell her that our reservation was not booked for the private room. I did not know until later that evening about the down payment so I showed the manager the email documenting the conversation with Kate Witte. After some time the team did make new accommodations for our group putting together two tables so the cake could sit out on the end of a long table. The restaurant was very busy that night and the service was poor. Our waiter was not very attentive and my mother's order was forgotten when the main meal came out. We were comped for her meal. The food was also lackluster and no one really enjoyed their meals. We had to ask for to-go containers. My major problem was when I asked for small plates and a knife to cut the cake. The manager that knew I was bringing a cake for my father's 80th birthday told me they did not provide plates and knives for that type of service. I was very upset and asked her why did she not tell me this knowing I was bringing a cake for a man celebrating his 80th birthday. She explained that they used to charge fees but did not even attempt to rectify the situation and said I would need to call Kate. We waited a very long time expecting that we could just get some extra plates and a knife and did not even expect the staff to cut the cake on our behalf. Had we known we would not have brought the cake and it was clearly communicated to this manager. The cake was sitting out there entire time so it was obvious that we would need utensils that were not present. I feel like the manager did not care and I understand the team was busy but this is one of my family's favorite restaurants. My father even received a gift card to the restaurant for his birthday that they will not be using and they have been patrons for over a decade and spent lots of money over the years. We will not be back and Asparagus ruined my father's milestone celebration with indifference and neglect. My mother is sad and depressed today and we have to have a do over at their house and we could have kept our original plans and not spent north of $300 on poor service and low quality food and just stayed at home. read more

Wow, just wow. I came here on business and upon my first night I found myself hungry. Being new to the area I went exploring, and I found this place. After walking inside I was impressed, very up scale and nice inside, also very quiet (which I like). I ordered the Pad See Eiwit was very good, and I even had some leftover to take to the hotel with me. The service was excellent, timely, and most of all accurate. A lot of these are skill issues, so I do blame ourselves for a reasonable amount of the kerfuffle that ensued at the establishment, but regardless there were some complications. I think it's tough but there needs to be some encouragement to eat family style at a place like this, as not doing so considerable lowers the enjoyment of eating here. Also, there was an order made to go which was requested with the food to be eaten at the restaurant, but it caused maybe a 20-30 minute wait after we finished our meal. This is for my most recent two visits this weekend. The me online order system called Toast is a disaster. It's inflexible and doesn't allow for example ordering a stir fry with 2 proteins. It only allows you to order 1. When ordering a side of peanut sauce, it offers you basil and a bunch of other choices, each of which has a price associated with it. When you want a vegetarian stir fry ironically, you can't get peanut sauce instead of soy sauce. The first time I used online ordering the second time by phone. I asked if they could reduce the amount of oil so the dish wasn't so greasy and the order taker told me she suggested I order something else if I didn't want the oil because it was a stir fry. I replied I just wanted less oil, nothing else and I ordered what I WANTED, nit WHAT THEY want to give me. The food is fair to okay but definitely not as good as places that are authentic Thai. And the prices here are higher. The attitude of telling me I need to order something other than the stir fry I wanted ticked me off. I will not be here again anytime soon and I suggest others go elsewhere too. read more

There was a larger room being used for a Christmas party so when my companion asked to get a drink we were directed to the bar. The space was nicely dimmed and had a quiet vibe. We were able to eat our take out at the bar while waiting for a drink. It was a nice environment and the food was flavorful and perfect on a snowy day. I was a bit disappointed by the overwhelming lack of veggies in the veggie green curry but figured they were generous with the tofu so that maybe made it even. If ordering from here again though I would ask for veggies only as if felt more like a tofu green curry with no veggies. My turn driving was all done so this was a lovely wind down/happy hour drink. I am a long time customer even going back to the Siam Marina days in Calumet city. My husband and I often order take out at Asparagus and one of our favorite take out dishes is the Pineapple fried rice. The last 3 times we have ordered it, they did not put the 2 shrimp in the dish that they have always included in the past. I mentioned it to the hostess the last time we ordered this as take out and they apologized and included it. We ordered again today and I never mentioned it, hoping it would be in there, and again ... no shrimp. The food is always delicious but I'm not understanding why this is no longer included and why do I have to ask for something that was always put in the dish before?? I've been coming to Asparagus for years. This was my favorite Thai place, and I drive a distance to get to the restaurant. However, this restaurant has drastically slipped. I went last night and was totally dissatisfied. Service was very slow. I had to go to the front and ask when we would be served. I began by ordering an appetizer of spring rolls. The rolls were delicious, but the sweet and sour sauce was very spicy. I asked about sauce that wasn't spicy, and the server said the only sauce that wasn't spicy was soy sauce. I was really surprised because in the past, the sweet and sour sauce wasn't spicy. I was also surprised because most restaurants generally notify you if food is spicy due to certain health conditions, and often will have an alternative sweet and sour sauce that's not spicy. I then received my entree of pad see ew. It was sitting in so much soy sauce it looked like gravy. Of course this made the dish extremely salty. I tried using some of the spicy sweet and sour sauce to balance out the salt, but it didn't work. Again, due to health conditions, what kind of cook makes a dish that salty??? My friend's dish was salty also, and she suggested that I shake the noodles before eating. I shouldn't have to shake a $50. meal before eating.
