This dish tasted exactly how I remembered it in some of my favorite Bangkok restaurants that I've been to over the years. I've been to SE Asia many times over the years and will keep going back because of the WOW factor. So, details... the noodles are cooked perfectly. It's soft, but still has a slight crunch to it. The tamarind flavor is bold, but not overpowering. The peanuts, sprouts, chives and all the other ingredients were in the perfect proportion. The shrimp is fresh, crispy externally and tender when you bite down on it. This is by far the best Shrimp Pad Thai that I've had in Rhode Island. If anyone has another suggestion, then please let me hear it! The Thai Iced coffee was also BOMB! A nice caffeine jolt, creamy and not overwhelmingly sweet. Overall, we were really happy with the meal and there were a couple of dishes that genuinely stood out. The Samui Fried Rice was probably one of my favorites. You could immediately taste the wok hei. The rice had that smoky, slightly charred flavor that you only really get when fried rice hits a properly hot wok. It makes such a difference compared to fried rice that tastes like it was simply tossed together. The shrimp were a good size, the vegetables still had some texture, and everything was seasoned well without being overly salty. The Pad Gra Paow was another standout for the same reason. Tons of wok hei and a really nice savory basil flavor throughout the dish. I love when you can actually taste that something came straight out of a ripping hot wok, and both this and the fried rice had that quality. Definitely two dishes I would order again. We also tried the Spicy Basil Fried Cod, which came with a generous piece of fried fish and plenty of vegetables. The cod held up nicely against the sauce without becoming completely soggy. We also ordered the Choo Chee Duck, which was rich and flavorful and a nice change from the usual noodle and rice dishes we tend to order at Thai restaurants. The Yum Beef Salad was a nice contrast to everything else. Lots of beef with cucumber and herbs, and the brighter, tangier flavors helped break up some of the heavier dishes. One thing I especially appreciated was how accommodating they were with spice levels. My fiancée grew up eating Hong Kong-style food and her definition of spicy is basically... no spice . Some Thai restaurants say they can make something mild and it still comes out with enough heat that she can't really enjoy it. Check In actually listened. Her food came out genuinely mild without tasting bland, while the dishes we wanted with more heat could still be made accordingly. If you're dining with people who have very different spice tolerances, that's a big plus. And definitely get a Thai iced tea. Sweet, creamy, cold, and exactly what I wanted alongside the spicier and more savory dishes. We finished with the coconut pudding, which was a nice little sweet ending after ordering way too much food. The restaurant itself isn't huge, but it has a cozy, casual feel. Service was friendly, and considering how many different dishes we ordered, everything came out well. Overall, Check In Thai Cuisine is a really solid little Thai spot that would be easy to overlook from the outside. The biggest thing that would bring me back is the wok cooking. That smoky wok hei in the fried rice and gra paow was easily the highlight of the meal. If it were my first visit, I'd start with the Samui Fried Rice, Pad Gra Paow, and a Thai iced tea. But, don't let the lack of ambiance discourage you - it all gets better from there! The gentleman who greeted & served us, in fact, the only staff member we saw during our Saturday evening visit, was friendly & helpful. And the food was fabulous! We started with B-K-C Summer Rolls and Tom Kha Kai Soup. The rolls we crisp, fresh & tasty. The soup looked quite basic - just the coconut broth and lots of chicken and tiny treats of diced galagal. This soup often includes mushrooms & I've also seen tomatoes, onions, or sweet pepper slivers too. But, none of those extras were needed as the flavor was just perfection - so delicious! The large size was more than enough for two, definitely good for three or maybe four. We happily slurped it all up anyway. For entrees, Kang Keow Warn ( green curry) & Duck Curry were fantastic! With just the right amount of spice as we had requested & a touch of sweetness typical of central Thailand, they were served with rice & filled with perfectly fresh, crisp vegetables and meat. We were too full for dessert, but there were many interesting choices & I can't wait to return for mango & sticky rice. Prices here are surprisingly reasonable - literally half of what most local Thai spots charge. The short beverage list featured wine at $5 a glass and several beers choices at just $4 & $5 a bottle. Dinner for two with leftovers came to under under $50! They don't have takeout menus or a website, so we took photos of the menu for ordering take out, something I'm sure we will be doing very regularly for now on!
