It's been a few years since eating at this establishment. I saw mixed reviews and decided it was worth a shot. I went with a friend and we both had the Chow Mein & Chop Suey sandwich, a locathat was served with French fries. The serving was generous, very filling, and tasty. The side of fries seemed to be from from frozen and although appreciated as a side really didn't add anything. Would I go back ? 100% my companion said that they never had a bad meal here. There was only two other people there we wanted to sit at a table, not a booth because I'm short and she gave me and my husband an attitude. The food is great they have the best chow mein and duck sauce and chicken tenders! Fried rice, egg rolls, crab rangoons are great as well. I just wish they would update their website (without an AI description) to clearly see their menu because it's a hassle to find their menu. It's listed on some third party website but it's hard to find. I also wish they would open up an online ordering system with curbside pickup. It's more convenient to order something through a website with clear pictures and descriptions especially when wanting to try something different and new. I was out visiting Summers/Fall River Chinese is different (and better) then the rest of the country so I had to stop here. I had the #1 Chow Mein was great but maybe a little small. Best eggrolls around. We hadn't had Chinese food and years and I can't tell you the last time we've been to China Lake. Ordering over the phone is easy and they text you to let you know when your order is ready for pickup. Covid restrictions means I want comfort food so I went with all of the "bad" food I loved as a kid - chow mein, fried rice, chicken fingers and egg rolls. I really enjoyed it all and my husband was happy with his chicken with garlic sauce. We've been back a few times since. This really is a 2 star restaurant but the server was so extraordinary, she received 1star just for how great she was. It was like a visit to a Chinese restaurant in 1980. The dishes were proportioned and that cafeteria kind of glass. Now the food... the restaurant is unusually expensive for pretty basic Chinese food. I did want to give it a fair try, so I purchased a combination plate which was chicken fingers, pork, fried rice, and chow mein. My extraordinary waitress made sure I had all the accompaniments, including chili oil, duck sauce, mustard and soy sauce. The combo was $13. There was a good amount of hot and well-made chicken fingers. No complaint really good. With it was a pork fried rice that was prepared a long time before my serving. It was barely warm. Had the usual stuff, but I only had two or three nuggets of pork. The chow mein was pretty bad, he conglomeration of noodles, and some other stuff, pretty unrecognizable, and not tell me as I've always had it. Wow I am so glad I came here! I was on the fence because of the reviews but I went with my gut and was not disappointed! Sara our server was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Nice hot pot of tea for the table, one of my favorite things, fresh and flavorful food and the prices were right. This place looks a little old school but if you can find the nostalgia in that then you'll love it! Came out to China Lake for the gluten free menu. Had the pu pu platter for 4, came with plenty of chicken wings, spare ribs, shrimp and egg rolls for the 8 of us. We had an order of the pork fried rice to share and we each ordered an entree. I had the pork with lobster sauce and it was a little weird. I didn't really enjoy it. Apps are passable but entrees are not good. We have tried many entrees to find a good one and after a half dozen take out orders we have given up. Meats are overcooked, broccoli and other veg is cooked to oblivion, sauces are too heavy or too goopy. Rice is OK. A takeout order with 2 entrees and a few large apps rings up to around 90 dollars, not worth the cost. Dine in and you will be charged $2.50 per fill up. Honestly what place doesn't do free refills? I would be OK, not thrilled, but OK with that if they had bigger glasses. Their glasses are tiny and filled with ice so you really get about 5-6 good gulps of soda before its gone. Not cool. Sesame chicken was terrible, and that's my favorite dish. It came with sauce on the side, no sesame seeds to be found, looked and tasted just like sweet and sour sauce and huge cutlets of chicken. Not what im used to and wasn't good. The only thing this place has going for it are their chicken fingers aren't battered to death like every other Chinese place and the only reason why this is a 2 star and not a 1 star restaurant. Good food, good service, large portions. Only complaint is pricing and how food is dispersed when you takeout. I've learned how to order to get the best value. Unless you're serving a big crowd, ordering any appetizers is costly and you'll end up with leftovers for days. Best bet our their combo dinners. If you takeout, know that food items are kind of tossed together. Chow mein is actually mixed not the way many places seperate noodles and gravy. Walked into the restaurant- nothing special. But none-the-less, i stayed optimistic, in hopes that I would one day, I'd be on a first name basis with the staff and have a plater named after me when i died. China Lake take-out is a must every time I come into town to visit family. I love the chow mein sandwich (cheapest around), wonton soup, white meat lemon chicken or sweet & sour chicken, yumm. As a new Somerset resident I have ordered from China Lake a total of 3 times and I will probably not be buying from China Lake again. For the me the prices are pretty high for the quality of food. I don't mind paying a premium price for great food, and unfortunately China Lake does not meet my standards. The food is very greasy, and doesn't seem fresh. The taste of the food isn't great either, not terrible, but in comparison to other oriental restaurants it doesn't stack up. I have only placed pick up orders and the staff was always friendly and attentive when picking up but I can't comment on the dining experience. Overall I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, in my opinion there are much better options to consider. read more
