My wife and I were returning to Seattle after visiting Yellowstone and spent the night in Butte. We found this restaurant on Yelp. We weren't expecting world-class dining--just something reasonably clean and edible. What we did not expect was outright discrimination in 21st-century America--especially from people who, historically, have often been on the receiving end of it. As soon as we walked in, the owner/manager/waiter (all the same person) looked at us and said--in Hong Kong-style Mandarin--"I ask you to consume somewhere else." At first, I didn't even process what he said. My wife understood immediately: we were not welcome here because we looked Asian. Keep in mind, this was an Asian buffet. Once I realized what was happening, I was furious and ready to call the police. My wife pulled me away, reminding me there was no point staying another second. I agreed--but decided that people need to know about this. This isn't only about food quality. It's about basic human decency. And this man has none. Bottom line: Use common sense and basic logic. The owner refused to serve our family, claiming that during our last visit, our 1.5-year-old child dropped a bit of food on the floor. At the time, we offered to clean it up ourselves, and were told: "It's okay." Turns out -- it wasn't. What's worse, he also said that we "didn't leave a tip" -- and according to him, that's another reason we're not welcome at the restaurant. You will be asked to pay in advance for your meal. This isn't out of line necessarily. However, you will also be asked, prior to leaving, to take your credit card out again to leave a tip. Keep in mind this is a Buffett. You load up yourself. We found the food to be lukewarm and much of it was over done. All in all the food was not good and I would not recommend this establishment. So when asked to please leave a tip as I was leaving, I said I wasn't getting my card out again for a tip. Sorry. I was asked a second time at which point I said that I was not leaving a tip. The food was not good and was not hot and it was a Buffett. I was told not to come back again. And then some remark about "my generation" was made but I was already out the door and didn't catch it. I wasn't expecting much based on reviews but let me tell you that the negative reviews are unreliable. Food was hot, tasty and had a decent selection. The orange chicken and chow mein were excellent. Owner was super kind and of course I left a tip, why wouldn't you? Owner chased us down in the parking lot to demand a tip. No table service whatsoever, all self serve. I normally tip 20% at a sit down restaurant, and maybe a smaller tip at a buffet, where the server will deliver drinks to your table. That was not the case here. This was rude and disconcerting. There was some kind of black mold coming out of the ice machine with the ice. I should have taken that as a sign. To make things worse, there was a creepy little man hovering over us to make sure we choked down all of the glop. At one point, you could hear him having a violent altercation with a woman in the back. It freaked us out. As we were leaving, the man blocked the exit accosted us, and demanded a tip. Dude that owns the place thinks tips are mandatory, if your business needs more money or you feel unappreciated for cleaning tables raise the prices, shaking down customers for tips is crazy, the food is alright when it's fresh. Shocked, asked why, the owner pointed the sign "we reserve the rights to refuse serving anyone" without giving any reason. The time was Friday 7:00pm, the restaurant only 3rd tables taken, all others empty. All sitting customers there were white. The owner does not like Asians or Blacks because he assumes the colored people do not like to give a tip, only whites do. But he dared not to refuse Blacks because they may sue his ass off. My 1 star review is not in regards to the food as my family and I were immediately kicked out of the restaurant (and threatened with the police) because we did not tip during an earlier visit. There is absolutely no reason to tip because we get our drinks, plate our food and leave our dish in a bin as we exit. The ONLY man "working" in the restaurant is the owner and he stands at the restaurant entrance to take our money as we enter. If I were to tip it would be to the poor woman cooking in the back kitchen. People may feel the need to tip at a buffet, I do not. Very clean, friendly service. Wasn't very busy for dinner. Food was very tasty, but selection was somewhat limited. I think they are caught between not enough customers for more food and not enough variety/volume to please all customers. Some dishes were not kept hot enough. The price is very reasonable. Be a good customer, leave a nice tip, don't waste food. If they get more business the abundance of food will increase. Again, everything tasted great. Wanted to give this place some much deserved love. Went for dinner and it cost me 15 bucks with a drink. I think a fair price for what you got. A steal given how much food costs these days. Overall, I don't think it deserves the low ratings that it has been given. Here are my thoughts... Pros 1. Hot food was hot and cold food was cold. I came right at 6pm so it may have played a factor but they keep food stocked with small quantities. I see that as a good thing so the food doesn't sit on a tray dying. 2. Included soda fountain. This may not be a big deal for you but it is for me. I hate not having a steady supply of liquids with dinner 3. All the deep fried food was crispy and the oil tasted clean. Didn't feel sick at all afterward. 4. Small selection of Ice cream was included as well. Nothing special but I always like ending on something cold and sweet. Cons 1. Atmosphere. There isn't any. Terrible. If you're in to that, this probably isn't the place for you. 2. Pay before you eat. Not a problem for me but I know it bothers some people. 3. VERY small amount of dishes. The food was mediorker, nothing really exceptional. The fruit buffet was old...fruit was obviously out in the air for a while. The pudding deserts were horrible. Service was just paying to get in. No offering of drink refills ect. Just came and picked up a dirty plate. Ambiance is cool and boring, no music , nothing. We paid our 30.00 to get in, seated ourselves and went 1 trip through the buffet. Got our drinks and ate our dinner. The owner buzzed around us like a fly on its favorite food. Never said a word. My husband is a Vietnam Vet. And is a little slow moving, the manager was ready jump all over him as he scooted his walker along. I stepped in between my husband and the manager. He was angry and pointing to the back of his menu to 3 letters he hand written there. TIP.....I said top? There is no one to tip? I'm just now making a yelp because of how upset the encounter with the owner made my family. On March 3 2022 my grandma and great grandmother went in to eat some Chinese food at this place. They are regulars here and go every couple weeks. My great grandma doesn't have much of an appetite anymore but they pay for 2 plates when they go. Today as my grandma went to pay for their plates, card extended the owner told them they would not serve them. Great grandma looks around and others were eating. They asked why and were told that they weren't welcome to eat there anymore because they waste their food. Honestly, the food in this place is better than most other asian buffets I have been (which is the only reason we return) however, the owners are the worst sort of people. I've heard the owners have a violent argument in the back (to include screaming and throwing pans). I have seen the owner yell at customers, including young children. Today the owner stopped my daughter and I at the door and told us we needed to put a tip in his cup. He then yelled at us and said, "I clean your table, you put tip in cup!". I was kinda shocked since this is A BUFFET... a buffet that has risen significantly in price from $11 to $15 per plate. A buffet where we literally serve ourselves. We will not be giving these people any more of our money. They are always rude. Nearly every time we have dined here, there has been some type of altercation with customers. Also there has been black mold in the ice machine the last 2 visits. Nasty black mold on the ice floating in the cup. My Mom, my baby nephew, and myself just went into Asia Buffet. I let the guy working there know that there was 2 of us and a baby. Ate here when visiting family, paid $100 and a few bucks for 7 adults and a child, which included drinks at dinner time. We thought it was a great deal. The selection wasn't huge, but the food that they did have was not bad at all. Nothing was old or overcooked. They kept the dishes filled for the most part.
