There was hair sticking out my ice cream and the girl taking my order kept wiping sweat from her neck and face while making my order and the people before me order. She didn't sanitize her hands. Then after I paid I looked at the ice cream after asking for more peanut butter and there was hair sticking out of it. I told her never mind I would like a refund, she asked why. I pointed to the hair sticking out my cup and she asked would I like a new order because she can't return it because it's food. I told her you gave me bad food so how is that fair? She then asked a guy in the back who told her to call the manager. The manager didn't answer. I had to write down my name and number for when the manager has time to call her back and tell her how to return the funds back on my credit card. I should've taken a pic but I was so let down from the experience. I grew up here and was visiting from Florida. Husband and I moved to Hamden at the end of August when it was extremely humid out. We found this place late one night when we were especially upset about the weather, and had an awesome experience. The ice cream is super fresh, and you can taste the difference between here and anything that comes from a supermarket. I had the pumpkin pie flavor, which literally just tasted like frozen pumpkin pie. the hot fudge was also really tasty and had a nice chocolate flavor without being totally overwhelming to the ice cream. my husband had the pina colada flavor--which could have been terrible, but was amazing. Awful!!!!! I don't know where to start, nothing was good! I will never go again, EVER. 1) Female worker with dirty blonde hair in ponytail extremely rude. I'm looking at the menu and I hear "what do you need" snotty tone, no smile, stone faced angry look on her face. After paying my total of $17.01 I am handed $2.99 in change i put nothing in her tip cup, walk away to a dirty look from this employee. To other customers this worker was not friendly, never a smile, never a thank you. 100% rude. A snotty "have a good one" as she was walking away was her response to customers. Don't say anything at all rude bitch 2) Waffle cone I had was stale, was hard as a rock had to throw half of my cone away before I literally chipped a tooth. I handed the bottom half of the cone to my 7 year old and it was too hard for her to even bite into 3) Salted caramel ice cream was very good. Was some freezer burn in the banana cream pie ice cream - several very icy spots in the ice cream 4) My 7 year old daughter is pouring water at he counter from the free pitcher into a cup. It becomes empty my daughter clearly states to my wife she only got a drop of water. 4 employees standing RIGHT THERE - doing nothing. Not one of them offered to fill the pitcher for her, or other customers possibly wanting water. 5) I have been to every homemade ice cream shop in CT this year. Ashley's is the most expensive, and by a lot. The product or customer service don't warrant the pricing. Do yourself and your wallet a favor - go elsewhere. You will thank me later. Ashley's actual product is really good. We love their ice cream, and I think the single and double scoops are very generous portions. I'm giving three stars because the staff at this location are terrible. Absolutely no understanding of customer service or professionalism, and I've never seen an actual adult there managing them to show them the way to be polite and mature. They roll their eyes, the act inconvenienced when you try to order, they are just rude. Every time I've gone, customers are practicing all social distancing policies, they know what they are going to have, so they move quickly to avoid being in the shop for too long. But the staff is still just obnoxious. We are pulling way back on how often we go. We'll give some other shops a chance. read more

I'm a huge fan of their ice cream. For whatever reason, I will only eat Ashley's cookies n cream ice cream, I'm not a huge fan of the flavor otherwise. I also like their black raspberry, dulce de leche, and peach. They are a little pricier, in my opinion, but the ice cream is worth it. read more

Supposed to be the best ice cream in the state. It was pretty good but not mind blowing. Good hand scooped ice cream is always a bonus and the waffle bowl wasn't stale to double bonus. Note - this is for the Hamden location. I have been going to Ashley's loyally for years, and we frequently go to the Branford location. The Hamden store sucks, and the service is even worse. The girl working the counter was a total bitch and had her little boyfriend hanging out there the whole time, copped an attitude when I was trying to decide what I wanted and just huffed and puffed the entire time. I know, scooping ice cream is so fucking difficult. There are so many people out of work right now who would be so grateful to have that simple-ass job it's not even funny. I like Ashley's Ice Cream. I think this location tries with its crayon-colored pictures on the wall and colorful chalk listing the flavors of the day, but there's just something about it that makes it not as good as the New Haven location I like to go to when I'm in the area. I just didn't get that welcoming friendly feel from this Hamden location that I think Ashley's Ice Cream goes for, and that kind of affected my whole experience. The ice cream is good - creamy with that homemade feel that you can still get from a small chain, but the staff wasn't very friendly, the tables and floor felt kind of dusty and unclean, and the pictures on the wall looked yellowed and faded. I'd probably just stop in and not look at anything to grab a pint if I was really craving Ashley's, but I think I'm more likely to skip this location and stick to the New Haven one I really like. read more

I've been going to Ashley's for over 10 years so I'm surprised I never wrote a review! This is our staple local ice cream spot, and we find ourselves here a couple times per month. The quality and flavor of the ice cream and toppings is usually excellent. Some of our favorites are the bittersweet chocolate (actual chocolaty chocolate ice cream!), lemon pie, orange chip, and strawberry, but almost anything is good. They serve real whipped cream as well as really good fudge and peanut butter toppings, as well as the usual selection of sprinkles, nuts and candies. My only complaint about the food is that their waffle cones tend to be stale, so I'd recommend sticking to a cup. Cons are the tables could use to be cleaned more often (sticky) and the shopping-center locale leaves a little something to be desired, as there is no good outdoor seating. Ashley's is a wonderful small chain of Ice Cream Shops in the Hamden/New Haven area. I've been in dozens of times since living in this area, and I've always left with exactly what I wanted. The staff is friendly and accomodating. And in the Hamden location (I can't recall about the downtown location) they have a full wall, floor to ceiling, covered in beautiful pictures drawn by patrons professing their love of Ashley's. It's great to look at them all as you sit and enjoy a cone, and proves to me that I'm not the only one who loves Ashley's! read more

Bad experience with Ashleys in Guilford. I have been going to the store since it opened and receiving ice cream cones with 2 types of ice cream in single scoop. A very officious clerk who identified herself as the store manager refused to do so this time saying it was against store policy. What is the big deal! She was most unhelpful and the type better equipped working in a government office than in a retail store that tries to keep a happy customer. Showed up tonight at the Hamden location, hours say they are open till 11, we showed up at 9:59 as a man was walking out and the girl ran over and locked the door in our face and refused to look at us as we knocked on the door for an explanation. Obviously we learned they close at 10, but we're excited to see this location was open till 11.
