leaving a review here in support since I can't on google. the reviews aren't suspiciously positive, it's just that good!! came here when I was looking for a dairy free option on a trip last june. this was by FAR the best vegan ice cream I've ever had. I got the guava panetela and WOW. it was so creamy and smooth like a gelato, and so tangy and sweet with the tender pieces of almond cake. staff was very kind too! I'm genuinely so bummed that I live in NJ because this would be a regular stop. if yall ever consider shipping pints online, I'll be the first in line! read more

Via Lactea is a plant based ice cream shop in New Haven that people are talking about. I drove by last week after eating dinner, and noticed there was nearby street parking. The shop is nice. Service was friendly. I didn't count, but they may have had about 15 flavors. The colors in the case were vibrant. I ordered Strawberry Mojito. It was sweet and acidic. I liked it a lot. Just discovered Via Láctea in downtown New Haven and I'm really impressed!!! This Puerto Rican-inspired spot offers frozen desserts that draw from traditional flavors with unique spices you wouldn't expect like black pepper, turmeric, and cardamom, and it works really well. I tried the golden milk flavor which was smooth and creamy thanks to the coconut milk, with a nice subtle spicy kick. I also had the guava paletela with almond cake pieces which was fruity and balanced. They have other interesting flavors too like hibiscus, coconut with mango, and matcha. Added bonus is everything is vegan and many options are gluten free, which is great if you're avoiding dairy or gluten. I'm usually not into vegan desserts, but this actually tastes like real ice cream. If you're in New Haven, it's definitely worth checking out, especially on a warm day. I'm already looking forward to trying more flavors. Also the shop is so gorgeous! There's a bunch of greenery and seating if you want to enjoy your treat outside. Amazing. This isn't a place for just vegan/dairy-free but all! The flavors are fantastic and unique. It is made in small batches and is swapped out seasonally. We tried ginger root, coquito, pb & j, praline, and home planet. So. Good. We are obsessed with their dark matter cones (GF and you'd never know)! They had multiple gf options for ice cream, brownies, cones, etc. The ice cream is a coconut base and very creamy. The owner we met was fantastic and the shop is so cute with little areas for seating. This shop is also DOG FRIENDLY!!! A much needed addition to New Haven. read more

I really liked this new place in new haven! I tried a bunch of flavors and settled on chocolate chip coffee which was gluten free. I enjoyed every flavor and will be going back to try their other flavors I did not get to try. The guava flavor is very popular and tasty too and highly recommend it! read more

This is a newly opened plant based ice cream place. All their ice creams are coconut milk based. If we opt for a flight, we can choose 4 flavors. I loved all the flavors and my favorites are pistachio and praline. It was hard finding the spot as Google map didn't show the place correctly it's just across the street from Costa pizza. read more

This was my first visit to Via Lactea. I appreciated how the owner pointed out that the flavors with name cards in black were limited/seasonal. I ordered a flight of four scoops. I tend to really enjoy creamy, dairy-based ice cream, and so I was totally blown away by the creaminess of their flavors since I wouldn't have thought that's possible with plant-based ice cream. Their ice cream is coconut milk-based, apart from the sorbets which are water-based. Their Golden Milk (ginger, cardamom, turmeric, black pepper) and Watermelon Thai Basil (sorbet) were absolutely spectacular -- very unique and refreshing flavor profiles that I would definitely order again. The Coquito flavor was also delicious. The only flavor that didn't hit the mark for me flavor or texture-wise was Taro Sesame, but with a few tweaks (making it slightly sweeter, adding more black sesame seeds and giving it a creamier consistency) it could become a standout flavor the next time it returns. I look forward to exploring their year-round flavors the next time I visit! read more

unbelievably happy to have a place like this in new haven! I appreciate any frozen dessert/ice cream place that actually labels what's in each flavor as opposed to just giving it a cute name and making you ask or guess. The space is cozy, clean, and cool, everyone there was helpful and friendly, and don't tell anyone but most of the local coffee shops WISH they could pull a shot as good as the one i got on my affogato. This is literally the best ice cream I've ever had - it's better than all the vegan and dairy ice cream I've eaten. They have traditional flavors, seasonal flavors, and also unique and delicious flavors such as coquito, apple cider (might be seasonal), and one that has both guava and a cake in it that has the consistency of a tres leches cake and is so sumptuous. My 6 and 3 year old daughters ask for this ice cream all the time and also love their unique flavors! The owner is also so nice. Highly recommend! read more

We have been to Via Lactea often and their ice cream is so delicious!!! We particularly love their praline and their hazelnut stracciatella. Their waffle cones are delicious as well. We are so thrilled to have a vegan ice cream shop to go to!! Their service has always been friendly and polite. Tonight, however, I have to give them a special shout-out!
