It is very organized and they have so many books. They also have children events weekly. If you're close by I do recommend checking it out and supporting them. Street parking only.

Needham Public Library is a great place to study or take out some books. There is tons of seating,…read moretables, desks, and comfy chairs. So even if it is crowded you will find a place to sit. There are windows everywhere which allows natural light to come in all directions which is great when you are studying for hours and need some vitamin d. The librarians are very friendly and helpful. You don't even need a library card to take books out, just your license. If they don't have a specific book you were looking for they will order it from another library and send you an email when it's ready. There selection is vast too so they usually do have the books I am looking for. They have two lots for parking so you will always find a spot.

One…read morereason why I love this place is because of it's hours... many libraries in Greater Boston close on Sundays, but not the BPL! Sure, the building is old and there is a slight mildew smell, but I think it makes the atmosphere much more welcoming. Computers are available to those with a minuteman library card, but you can also ask the staff for a guest pass in case you left your card at home or are visiting from out of town. There are plenty of individual desks, larger tables, and comfy chairs to choose from. It's rare for me to come here and not find a place to sit. All the staff are extremely friendly and accommodating. If you are looking for something that isn't in the Belmont collection they can send an order for that exact novel or book on tape to other libraries in the minuteman network. When the ordered item becomes available they will call or email and you can pick it up right here in Belmont! In elementary and middle school I always participated in the creatively-themed summer reading program hosted by the children's room. In the spring and summer the adjacent garden area offers wooden benches with a view of the stream. The Claflin room has limited hours but provides a look into Belmont's past, and the stockpile of local records is impressive. I have to say that the well organized nonfiction section is my favorite area to browse. Oh and I can't forget to mention the awesome free wifi! Overall, the quiet and cozy environment keeps this library at the top of my list for everything from cram sessions and research projects to reading just to pass time. To wrap this rant up, a couple of hints: 1: library staff are lenient; they allow coffee and other beverages, but please don't be rude and eat your entire lunch at a table! 2: sometimes parking can be difficult, there isn't a ton of space in the lot so be ready to parallel park on concord ave! 3: don't attempt to form giant study groups here, the noise level will attract some dirty looks from people trying to read.

If all the spaces are taken there is no easy way a person can go inside. Plus there is no outside drop box that they previously had on the far side of the building. One can no longer drive around the building but must enter and exit from the same driveway. The parking space is almost identical as it originally was but the building is twice the size. It also complements the setting along the Charles River quite well. It is across from the Charles River Coffee shop, allowing my perfect morning of getting breakfast, checking out a book and reading it overlooking the waterfall (inside the library if the weather is not quite right or down at the waterfall otherwise.) In the basement is the historical society museum. Again, this is a great stop if you are interested in local history, or if you just want a low-key place to spend the day. If you have children, keep an eye out for the story hour flag that is outside when stories are being read inside.

My most favorite library ever!…read more Firstly (and probably least importantly) it is in a great old building (but no disabled access, just so as you know). The library itself is pretty much one big room. Which is kind of my favorite part. Because you can bring your kids in, and while they look at kids books/play with toys you can look at books for YOURSELF! Yes, adult books! At most libraries trying to take your young kids to the adult section can be trying. There is no time to look at books. If your kids are really young they're probably running/crawling away or pulling books off shelves. If they're older they are probably bored and fighting. Or asking endless questions. No time to browse there! But at the Bacon Free library they can look at the kids books (or play with toys) while you look at the adult books. My real actual favorite part though, is the staff. They are super friendly and very accepting. And they know their stuff too. You can say "so I heard a bit on the radio the other day about this book that sounded really interesting. I'm not sure who it's by or what the title is, but it was about..." And chances are they'll know what you're talking about. I'm sure other libraries have nice staff too, but due to the small and intimate size of the Bacon Free Library you really get to see and interact with the staff (and like I said they're super helpful!) Now they don't have all the books in the world (although they do have thousands). But they can request any book for you through the Minuteman Catalog, and send you an email once it arrives and is ready for pick up. They have many programs. Our favorites are story hour (Wed & Fri at 10am). Many kids programs at other libraries require you to sign up in advance, and also limit the ages of the children. Which is VERY frustrating if you have kids of mixed ages. What are you meant to do with the other kid while one is in story hour? At the Bacon Free Library it's simple - everyone is welcome! No sign up necessary, just show up at 10am. Art for all (one Friday a month 3-5pm) is also great. The only downside are the hours - they're not open every day at the same hour (budget cuts - they're only there part time now). Check out the website for the hours before you go.
