I'm originally from Boston, so I frequented the BPL in Copley Square quite a bit. Since I moved around so much, I feel quite at home at Thayer Public Library. Staff are very accommodating and polite, and able to help with almost anything you need. Their media collection is massive compared to the BPL, and I simply just love it. Located in one of the toughest towns in Massachusetts, with a budget that should be at least doubled, and seriously understaffed this library delivers an incredible range of services. The collections are the best found in any local library of its size in the state and the historical collections are a treasure trove of Southeastern Massachusetts heritage matched only by larger facilities in Boston. Most outstanding is the quality of reference service delivered to the ever-changing needs of city residents. With a large transient population that has few other outlets for meaningful information the reference department has put together a collection and commitment to service that meets a huge level of need at minimal cost. How they do business could serve as a case study in a library school. A decade ago city residents led by the former director persevered and raised enough to renovate the early 20th century Carnegie building and give its collections a proper home. One would hope the city's residents value this gem in their midst.

Walking up to the library, you're struck by just how grand it looks, atop a hill, with beautiful stone work. It has a town in the middle, a chimney off to the right side, and a great big archway entrance facing the street, although the actual entrance is located around the corner from that. I'm always enamored with old buildings and this was such a treat. A lot has been done to maintain the original features of the inside. On the first floor near the elevators they have a bunch of WW1 era posters proudly displayed in the hallway. There are a few busts perched on shelves near the entrance. To get upstairs you can take a set of stairs located near the elevator, or you can take the hidden staircase located on the street-facing side of the building. The hidden staircase is pretty neat. The second floor is beautiful. They have a great big children's section with window seats, some open floor space, plenty of natural light, and beautiful ceiling lights. The second room is all non-fiction books. It has a nice high ceiling, and small reading nooks with tables. The third room is where the fireplace is, and some historic artifacts from Ames' and Easton's history. There are also collections of book on local history and some decades old public records. I spent a lot of time upstairs, just in awe of everything. The architecture and interior design are beautiful. I wish I had a library this nice in my town!

We were frequently stopped and asked multiple questions such as our education status ("are you even in school?"), we were told to move to downstairs to a cafe that didn't exist and when we had asked one woman for a room, the librarian who came to take her place kicked us out,("you have to leave,other people are waiting" and later proceeded to slam the door open and say "just making sure" and "just checking" .. however there were plenty of open rooms available, at 7PM! This is a public library! Which should be FREE to the public for their personal use. So please use your discretion, this was a very uncomfortable experience.

I went and got the library director because it got so bad and she said to me "The library is noisy you should have brought headphones." Seriously! The library isn't noisy your workers are! And nobody expects silence but we expect it to be relatively quiet so we can hear ourselves think. Nobody was making any noise but the workers at the front desk being obnoxiously loud. I was excited to have a library within walking distance to my new home. I walked over, about a mile…read moreat 3pm on a Wednesday and it was closed, didn't open til 5pm that day. It has very strange hours; Monday 1PM-9PM, Tuesday 1PM-9PM, Wednesday 5PM-9PM and Thursday 9AM-5PM. It's closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The library section is EXTREMELY small, I was honestly shocked at how small and what little books they had. The building is very large yet the book section is a short hallway of sorts with 5-6 rows of bookcases on each side as you walk to the end of the room. The bookcases are about 5 feet in length with about 5 shelf's of books. In comparison to the other libraries it is tiny. There also isn't any computer access, inclusive of a computer catalog to see what books are available there and at the other town libraries. I was pretty disappointed and will be going to check out the other town libraries. It is a beautiful building though and will post some photos later when I have more time.

Amazing kid, young adult and adult programs and activities always happening. Super safe, and you almost kinda find street parking here compared to the main library in the city that you absolutely cannot. There are two small interesting exhibits inside two-way windows of paraphernalia associated with running a library before computers became prolific--a trip down memory lane for some of us, lol. The library actively engages with the community through outreach including a Fiber Crafts Circle and a local seed library. I wish my library had these programs!

What I can say personally of my experiences is that each time I go I have found that the Staff…read morereally goes that extra mile to help me get the information or location in the library to complete my project! I want to give a shout out to two really helpful Staff that made my time there seamless. The first one was SYDNEY, actually left the desk and guided me to the right location and used the equipment to get my project done since I was unfamiliar how to maneuver it! She directed me to another floor where another Staff member DUSTIN, guided and helped me complete project! I hope the Supervisors know how wonderful these two Staffers are! Thanks for all your help!

There are so many things to love about the Thomas Crane Public Library, that this review will…read morebecome a "listicle" style of review. So... without further adieu: - Library of Things: It's already amazing enough that libraries have books, movies, music, magazines, and other media. Thomas Crane also has an ample select of items that can be checked out: wellness and sport, hobby, tech, tools, home, and many more. - Green Space: There is a large outdoor area with a handful of benches and trees. Not enough to call it a mini-park, but enough to be noted, and great for reading or relaxing outside on a nice day. I think they have Wifi available outdoors, too. - Staff: everyone I've interacted with has been patient, friendly, and kind. - The Richardson Building: This is a wing of the library from 1882. The wood throughout, lighting fixtures, stained glass windows, all are from, or inspired, a different time. It is like a special, permanent exhibit in a museum, and something I loved to have in my local library when I lived in Quincy. - Common Space: I hold that libraries are one of the few public spaces where one can exist without spending money. While this isn't shopping mall, its not a bad place for someone to spend a few hours. - Cafe: I never bought food or coffee, but it's gratifying to have a cafe available in a space like this. - Bookstore: While as with the cafe I haven't bought any books, it's cool to have a dedicated space for buying books the library may want to sell for whatever reason. - Parking: need I say more? A lot with more than enough space for library patrons. I don't recall their ever not being a spot when I needed one. - Collections: While not as large as Boston Public Library, Thomas Crane has an impressive collection of materials and media. Everything is well organized too. There's even board and card games available to borrow. The one and only complaint I have is that some of the furniture, namely the carrells are a little worn.
