There's a good staff here that are working hard to shelf the returned books. Lacking great funds, this library is not like Boston or Cambridge Public Libraries, with their fancy lobbies and shiny computers. It is, however, a safe space, a clean space and a welcome space. Some of the punters are... well, let's say 'interesting' to look at, but that should not deter you from using the library. Reading is for everyone!

They currently participate in collecting plastic bread tags and water bottle caps for recycling. There's also a coffee sample that you can take home to enjoy if they haven't run out that week. They are closed Sundays and Mondays, but are open late (for a library) a few days a week.

For starters the librarians are consistently helpful and top-notch. They go out of their way to help you find whatever it is you're looking for and to be available for assistance. The library building itself, while outwardly a bit dated in design, is light, airy and comfortable inside. Sign up for emails from the library on their website and you will hear about upcoming musical concerts, art exhibits, movie showings, the book club, lectures, readings by authors, and a host of other offerings. The library has its own gallery where you can regularly view all kinds of art. In addition to the books, the library has terrific DVD and CD collections. There is art work that you can borrow too and museum passes available. And all this is free! We're so lucky to have a great library system in general but the Hingham library is really something special. It's a great place to spend time.

The infrastructure is nothing to write home about but there are near daily activities for children, an excellent array of books on hand and more museum passes than you could shake a stick at... all things that combine for a great library going experience. The staff are cheerful, the late fees are lenient and the patrons friendly. It's the kind of place where fellow borrowers will be thrilled when you put them on to Huxley after seeing them checking out Orwell. Sharon Public Library is a quaint and restorative athenaeum.

You can hear their entire conversations, all the time, and despite them working here, they seem to have no clue about their loud voices. Good luck focusing on anything while at the computer terminal as the librarians behind you are in full blast mode seemingly oblivious to the people around them trying to focus, very frustrating. Don't ask for change for the copy machine as the librarian at the front desk became extremely snarky about how the library is not supposed to make any change for anyone at anytime. I was seeking change for a $1 to make some copies, but live and learn... It's doesn't get any better at the front desk of the library where the workers sometimes walk around, being helpful, but again so incredibly loud that you can clearly hear them from the opposite end of the 1st floor. It's not only the librarians that are loud, it's the people in there and the library staff very rarely ask anyone to quiet down. The librarians will go above and beyond to be of assistance, but this library is best off being not visited especially if you hope for a quiet atmosphere.

The librarians are wonderful, smart and resourceful. I never go downtown for anything or even to another branch when I order online and pick up there. When my children were younger we spent hours on the rug in the childrens section enjoying the best children's books before they could talk. I spent hours there writing my dissertation and still appreciate the encouragement and support I got from the staff. Special programs in the big add even more to this branch which is almost as a community center as a library for the Lower Mills and surrounding community. Located in one of the toughest towns in Massachusetts, with a budget that should be at least doubled, and seriously understaffed this library delivers an incredible range of services. The collections are the best found in any local library of its size in the state and the historical collections are a treasure trove of Southeastern Massachusetts heritage matched only by larger facilities in Boston. Most outstanding is the quality of reference service delivered to the ever-changing needs of city residents. With a large transient population that has few other outlets for meaningful information the reference department has put together a collection and commitment to service that meets a huge level of need at minimal cost. How they do business could serve as a case study in a library school. A decade ago city residents led by the former director persevered and raised enough to renovate the early 20th century Carnegie building and give its collections a proper home. One would hope the city's residents value this gem in their midst.

At my last visit, I spent most of my time in a side room where they hosted a children's storytime. Check the library calendar because they have some fun stuff coming up at the North Quincy branch - including mini golf with 2 different times for kids and adults. There's parking behind the library but we didn't know that and parked on the street.
