I went and got the library director because it got so bad and she said to me "The library is noisy you should have brought headphones." Seriously! The library isn't noisy your workers are! And nobody expects silence but we expect it to be relatively quiet so we can hear ourselves think. Nobody was making any noise but the workers at the front desk being obnoxiously loud. Then she told me "This isnt a college library." Lady I am 30 years old but thanks for the compliment.

Having recently signed up our kiddo for a sports clinic at the nearby Duplex, we've now had several occasions to visit the library. They have a great children's room with tons of classic and recently-published books, some cool kid-oriented technology, and a kid-friendly library of things. You know it's a cool place when you have to pry the kiddo away to meet up with her friends to play sports! In my old age, I am more prone to leveraging the online resources of the Old Colony Library Network, of which Duxbury is a long-time member, but today's Duxbury Free Library has a ton of resources that you should check out and check out!

For starters the librarians are consistently helpful and top-notch. They go out of their way to help you find whatever it is you're looking for and to be available for assistance. The library building itself, while outwardly a bit dated in design, is light, airy and comfortable inside. Sign up for emails from the library on their website and you will hear about upcoming musical concerts, art exhibits, movie showings, the book club, lectures, readings by authors, and a host of other offerings. The library has its own gallery where you can regularly view all kinds of art. In addition to the books, the library has terrific DVD and CD collections. There is art work that you can borrow too and museum passes available. And all this is free! We're so lucky to have a great library system in general but the Hingham library is really something special. It's a great place to spend time.

It has very strange hours; Monday 1PM-9PM, Tuesday 1PM-9PM, Wednesday 5PM-9PM and Thursday 9AM-5PM. It's closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The library section is EXTREMELY small, I was honestly shocked at how small and what little books they had. The building is very large yet the book section is a short hallway of sorts with 5-6 rows of bookcases on each side as you walk to the end of the room. The bookcases are about 5 feet in length with about 5 shelf's of books. In comparison to the other libraries it is tiny. There also isn't any computer access, inclusive of a computer catalog to see what books are available there and at the other town libraries. I was pretty disappointed and will be going to check out the other town libraries. It is a beautiful building though and will post some photos later when I have more time.

The layout caters to families, with a robust section for kiddos just past the entrance on the first floor. Got a grown-up item on hold? Sorry adults, you've gotta slog it up to the second to claim your piece. On the bright side, you're scaling a spiral staircase! Parking lot is massive, open evenings M-W and otherwise only closed on Sundays, and you best believe they have entertainment for the wee ones - from the infamous MamaSteph to jugglers, Lego Builders and story tellers! *Just like the Minuteman, the Old Colony Library Network will pull inventory from any of the 29 in-circle libraries dotting the South Shore and have it waiting for you at your local branch. I am currently in college as a commuting nursing student and I have been using this library every day since I have begun. Lately I have had several issues with the staff. I am not one to complain nor write a review but the way they approach people to tell them of something they are doing wrong is so disrespectful. I simply asked the director of the library if she would mind resetting the wifi for me because my friends and I were having trouble getting on to our school website, and the last time I had faced this issue a different librarian had reset the wifi and it worked within seconds. This simple task turned into what seemed like the world was ending. The director threw her arms up at me and the other women working and said "ILL JUST GO RE SET IT" and stormed down the stairs, I stood there in total disbelief and returned to my studying. I then heard the director talking poorly about me to the other staff. It was a simple request and I approached it very politely, never have I had someone blow up on me so quickly. Scary to think it was the director of the library who talked to me this way I later found out. Within seconds after SIMPLY resetting the wifi, we were all able to get on to the website. I told myself I would not return back to the library but living in Hanover it is just so convenient for me and I need a quiet place to study. When I decided to return back to the library today a fellow student and I put ourselves into what is labeled as the "quiet room for studying" not the "silent room" nor the "do not talk room". We had just taken out our mountains of books and laptops and were just greeting each other as we sat down and shut the doors to block out the noise. The librarian came in and opened the doors wide open and told us we could not keep doing this and that this room is meant for no talking at all. Mind you, we are the only 2 in the room and we shut the doors to block out all the noise outside of the room to focus on our studying. We were not sitting there playing music, or even talking loudly for that matter. The way she approached us was totally unprofessional and disrespectful simply because she has authority over us. If someone else was in the room and we were disrupting them by simply saying hello to each other before we began to study, I would understand. The town hall will be hearing from me in regards to the staff at this library. Truly a shame that I do not feel comfortable in my home town library. I understand libraries are supposed to be quiet, which is why I put myself in that quiet room with the doors shut because that library is most definitely not quiet, which is nothing they can control but just to prove a point I go t here to study and do my work. I do not treat it like a social area the way they act I do. They probably see a 20 year old college student and assume that I will be disrespectful, when in reality I sit there and do my work. It seems they find interest in making me feel like I am an issue to the library, sadly they are the ones looking for the issue to be formed. I will not recommend this library to anyone I know nor be using it again.

Walking up to the library, you're struck by just how grand it looks, atop a hill, with beautiful stone work. It has a town in the middle, a chimney off to the right side, and a great big archway entrance facing the street, although the actual entrance is located around the corner from that. I'm always enamored with old buildings and this was such a treat. A lot has been done to maintain the original features of the inside. On the first floor near the elevators they have a bunch of WW1 era posters proudly displayed in the hallway. There are a few busts perched on shelves near the entrance. To get upstairs you can take a set of stairs located near the elevator, or you can take the hidden staircase located on the street-facing side of the building. The hidden staircase is pretty neat. The second floor is beautiful. They have a great big children's section with window seats, some open floor space, plenty of natural light, and beautiful ceiling lights. The second room is all non-fiction books. It has a nice high ceiling, and small reading nooks with tables. The third room is where the fireplace is, and some historic artifacts from Ames' and Easton's history. There are also collections of book on local history and some decades old public records. I spent a lot of time upstairs, just in awe of everything. The architecture and interior design are beautiful. I wish I had a library this nice in my town!

This library provides all the services that the modern adult or child might need. Wireless…read moreprinting, complimentary coffee, noise-canceling headphones, private work stations, gaming stations for kids, even a VR setup and a 3D printer. It has a large kids room with books from infant up through adolescent, and the rest of the book selection is sizeable, if not the Library of Congress. The staff have been nothing short of delightful with me and others that I've seen them interact with, and I can't help feeling like I'm taking advantage of the system simply by coming a couple times a week to work.
