Free internet, but it is kinda slow...still free.Not really used to it, since my house has fast internet. So much books, magazines, references, CDs, and DVDs. There are more items here than work space. I stayed at a table,and I could clearly hear the people in front of me, next to me, and behind me. Not much room from people who are close by. The librarians here are really nice though. I like them. One of the older ladies here have a cute little laugh,and I get all warm inside when she does. I picture her handing me some warm fresh baked cookies and a glass of milk while I'm working.

The library is part of the Old Colony Library Network, which isn't the greatest, but their interlibrary loan system works well and you can get the books you want without having to worry about shipping and handling. Why buy best sellers that you will only read once? Why buy travel guides for a trip you'll only take once? Instead, you can get them through the library. And you can place books on hold AND "order" books through interlibrary loan all online. Just have your library card handy! With limited funding and budgets slashed left and right, it's hard for local libraries to provide the full services like larger libraries can. However, the Rockland library not only provides public use computers for patrons, a children's reading room, work by local artists, a knitting club, a gardening club, and online research databases ... the staff is pleasant and always willing to help. The parking here can be a little troublesome (I like to get in touch with my hipster side and walk to the library from home with my sack-o-books over my shoulder), but there is ample parking alongside the side streets. Don't like that the library isn't opening on weekends? Write to your local councilman (or councilwoman) to voice your concerns. Start a petition and fight the power!

Located in one of the toughest towns in Massachusetts, with a budget that should be at least doubled, and seriously understaffed this library delivers an incredible range of services. The collections are the best found in any local library of its size in the state and the historical collections are a treasure trove of Southeastern Massachusetts heritage matched only by larger facilities in Boston. Most outstanding is the quality of reference service delivered to the ever-changing needs of city residents. With a large transient population that has few other outlets for meaningful information the reference department has put together a collection and commitment to service that meets a huge level of need at minimal cost. How they do business could serve as a case study in a library school. A decade ago city residents led by the former director persevered and raised enough to renovate the early 20th century Carnegie building and give its collections a proper home. One would hope the city's residents value this gem in their midst.

It has very strange hours; Monday 1PM-9PM, Tuesday 1PM-9PM, Wednesday 5PM-9PM and Thursday 9AM-5PM. It's closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The library section is EXTREMELY small, I was honestly shocked at how small and what little books they had. The building is very large yet the book section is a short hallway of sorts with 5-6 rows of bookcases on each side as you walk to the end of the room. The bookcases are about 5 feet in length with about 5 shelf's of books. In comparison to the other libraries it is tiny. There also isn't any computer access, inclusive of a computer catalog to see what books are available there and at the other town libraries. I was pretty disappointed and will be going to check out the other town libraries. It is a beautiful building though and will post some photos later when I have more time.

I once rated it a five, but it's worth noting that one of the librarians is ridiculously loud. Live on the South Shore? Wondering about the history of your town, a monument, or something you'd…read moreheard about from a neighbor? You're in luck, because there's the Dyer Memorial Library, a small yet important institution that's devoted to collecting and preserving the history of Abington, Rockland and Whitman (full disclosure: I have done consulting work here). The Dyer was founded through the will of Marietta White Dyer in 1930 to promote and preserve the history of Abington. It's in an early 1930s structure on Centre Avenue that looks like a mansion. Inside are the library stacks, exhibit spaces and a reading room where patrons can review manuscripts, genealogical resources, photographs and newspapers. What makes the Dyer special is its focus on the area around Abington. It holds an extensive collection of town reports dating into the 1800s, as well as newspapers circulating in the area and artifacts often seen in the library's exhibits. While some items in the collection address subjects and areas outside of the Abington area, the beauty of its collection is that it is focused almost exclusively on the South Shore. From its founding to the present day the Dyer's personnel and trustees have been a great source of strength and direction. Although the staff is small it is versatile and has an extensive knowledge of its collections. Moreover their preservation efforts over the last decade or so have made tremendous strides toward improving the conditions of its holdings. The area between Boston's immediate southern suburbs and Cape Cod sometimes gets overlooked by shoppers, business and the media. Thanks to the Dyer, its history is kept safe and well secured.

The Barnes & Noble and the Buck A Book in Downtown Crossing closed years ago, and more recently the…read moreB&N at the Pru closed during the pandemic in 2022. When I happened upon the Barnes & Noble at Derby St Shops, I came to realize that I had somehow been mentally convinced that there were no more open locations. So this was a pleasant surprise! Nice and spacious with a well decorated children's area and a Starbucks on the right. Stop on by and peruse some books!

I kind of bounce around the Percy Jackson books, manga, fiction and some life skills / strategy type books. I also got a signed copy of the outsiders signed by the author from here for cheap! They also still do events at the store so peep the sign and stop in to support if you're free! The areas are well organized, I've seen some messes in other locations. They also have a good spread of highlight books with hand written descriptions! The employees when we went didn't talk much to us which is fine i rather not most times haha. Clean shop, nice coffee area to do some work and read, toy section, game and board game sections, builder sets, pop funkos, merch you name it.
