The biggest difference between Ashland Hardware and the big box stores in the valley is service. There are always knowledgeable staff available to help me find something. I have been using them for 45 years so I know my way around the store, but I often find it way quicker to ask for help if it is an odd O-ring, screw, or plumbing fitting. Over the years the staff have saved me hundreds of hours. The depth, and breadth of stock is sufficient to meet my needs 99% of the time. Real hardware stores are a gift to all of us. The staff who work here are what the 5 stars are for! They consistently go above and beyond to help me find whatever I need and do it with a smile. I'm happy to pay a little more for an item that could be had for cheaper at a box store (but would have taken me forever to find). They "special ordered" what I consider a large quantity of landscape materials, then delivered to my home in two loads due to the weight. The delivery guy sweat right along with me, getting dirty to unload while actually enjoying the hard work. They had a competitive price and THEN deducted for a retired military discount. The delivery was ahead of schedule to support an operational commitment for me as well. They just could not have done any better in this transaction. I'll be back (almost daily). I briefly visited Ashland again, and this store reflects the snooty on the take character of the town. I needed to buy a quart of motor oil and Ashland having no Autozone type of store I was directed to Ace. The unsmiling counter lady sends me down an isle, I find the oil and check it out to her unsmiling self. I tend to be a positive fellow and after charging it I notices a bowl of 100+ extra tiny chocolate pieces and I ask her if I can may have one. She says unsmiling yes for 20cents. Not wanting to ring another charge for 20 cents of course I decline. It was the utter unfriendly TOTALLY corporate on the take feel of the place that goes along with many other things in Ashland. Maybe they are afraid of the homeless folks which I certainly am not, nor do I look like. It's just downright unfriendly. People call you "sir." Once one LEAVES the snooty strictly enforced 2 hour parking downtown the Oregonians are friendly nice folks. read more

I've frequently had to ask for help finding items and invariably have several employees asking to help and walking me around until I had my item. I'm talking at least 50 trips. For Gayle, being in Ashland wasn't all theatre, walking around, and having nice meals. She's a very conscientious professional and vacation or no, certain work deadlines needed to be met. So, while she typed away in the comfortable Peerless Hotel lounge, my job was to stay out of the way. That's pretty easy, since I have no problems with keeping myself entertained for long periods of time. In this situation, I would simply go for exploratory walks in beautiful Ashland, but at the same time not going to any place that she also wanted to visit. The nearby Ashland Hardware store definitely met that criteria. In some ways, there's nothing better than exploring a big and well-stocked hardware store. And despite my alleged challenges at fixing things, all sorts or home projects jump out at me as I wander the aisles. And as a bonus, Ashland Hardware has pretty good office supply section. My only limitation was the available room in the car on the way back and whether Gayle's reaction would include the mention of my first name at the end of a disapproving sentence. On that day, there was peace in the land. Gayle was happy and satisfied with her work progress. And the only thing that I brought out of the store with me was the good impression of this excellent and helpful hardware establishment, a few file folders, and some good home improvement ideas. read more

More than just a hardware store, our local Ace hardware is a kind of quiet but vibrant doer cultural center. You won't often read about them in sneakbpreview or most of the other promotional media about Ashland but if you are one who is simply living and working here, you will eventually find your way in. The culture is one of simple integrity, experienced, well informed and proactive service . And it hasn't changed since we began the remodel of our first home here in 1983. This store earned a solid 6 starts from us today! went looking for adapters for a drip system and got exactly what I needed with the help of Ron. Super quick, knew exactly what I was talking about and what I needed to get the job completed. My friend was looking to replace the bottoms of several drawers from an antique dresser and was not expecting much in the line of help or product. But to her surprise, not only did they locate the proper depth of wood, but they cut the pieces to size for no charge and made sure they would work for the project. It has been very smokey in the valley due to numerous wildfires in the surrounding area. Nina and I brought N95 masks w/ us and thought we were prepared, but when we put them on yesterday afternoon, we found them stiflingly uncomfortable and took them right off. Almost immediately w saw a young couple w/ neon green masks that were more elongated. Then when we got closer to the theatre I saw an older woman wearing the same kind of mask. I asked here where she got it and if it was more comfortable than the white ones we had. She said it was comfortable, though she didn't like the color, and told me she'd gotten it at the hardware store at 1st and A. She commented that they were flying off the shelves. Today we drove down here to look for them. A very helpful young man told us they were pretty much out. They had one extra large one left. That wouldn't work for either of us. They have more on order but don't expect them until Monday or Tuesday. We're heading home Monday, so that won't help us. The man told us they do have other ones but, assuming the'd be just like what we had, we said no. That may have been a mistake, because later we saw people on the street wearing other white ones that had a breathing apparatus. We asked about their restrooms and he directed us to them. While Nina went I read the bulletin board in the hall outside the restrooms. It was full of fascinating announcements and information. While I went Nina read it and commented that one could spend an hour or more reading it. So while we didn't get the masks, which was our fault for delaying our visit here, we had a very good experience. read more

Increasingly poor customer service. Employees who are not familiar with products and are not willing to investigate to help find specific products and often provide misinformation. Attitudes ranging from disinterested to rude and disrespectful. I miss the old staff of friendly knowledgeable handy people. read more

I've lived 2 blocks from this store since it first opened. It seems they get better every year. The help is knowledgeable, helpful, resourceful and creative. Often I've needed a weird connector that isn't made, and they will show me how I can create what I need from plumbing or electrical part...they have imagination way beyond what is normally required for a hardware store clerk. And, they will often guide me toward the cheapest option, or when they are totally stumped, they are not afraid to recommend another store to find what I need. Several times they have replaced an item or a part without charge even if the original is way beyond the warranty period. I also find their prices for tools to be competitive with their big corporate chain competitors One more thing: Ashland hardware has the most comprehensive stock of screws and connectors I've ever seen anywhere, including big stores in big cities: and it's all laid out so that it's easy to find whatever you're looking for read more

Despite their size Ashland Hardware is the "go to" place in town for hardware needs. In the past I have found myself making an assumption that what I am looking for is a specialty product that is going to require a trip to Home Depot or Lowes. In reality almost everytime I have found myself back in Ashland empty handed and on my way to this little gem of a store, BINGO that's what I needed. We really just came here for a couple of shoulda-brought-it-from-home things while we were in town for the Oregon Shakespeare festival, but shopping was quick and painless. Easy to find just the little paring knife so I could eat grapefruit in the hotel room.... Easy to find just the little painter's mask to keep out the smoke from the wildfires that caused our outdoor play to be canceled.... Call me crazy, but I think I may have just discovered a new Fall ritual: Saturday morning walks to my local hardware store. When I walked in the store, I was immediately struck by how clean, well-lit and inviting it was. Very personable staff who quickly helped me find some spray foam. I explored the rest of the store and discovered that it has a huge variety of products, and most surprisingly (and fortunately) for a former art major such as myself, the best supply of art products (and especially nice pens and markers) that I've seen in Ashland. They also had an entire section of patterned duct tape, including Oregon Ducks colors! I don't know why in the past I've felt the need to drive all the way to Medford for home improvement supplies, because now I will be giving my business to Ace! I have been going to Ashland Hardware ever since they were in the building near Wells Fargo Bank, then to the Old City of Ashland building, and now to where it currently sits. As a contractor, I tend to end up in most of the hardware stores in the valley. Most are polite and always ask me if they can help. My response is usually: " I don't know, can you?" In most cases, no. The stuff I need is usually not your cookie cutter type materials. I usually need uncommon materials. That's where Ashland Hardware shines. They not only have tons of stuff not found in most hardware or "big box" stores, they also will try to find those hard-to-find items and order them if possible. They are the swiss army knife of hardware stores! I don't know how they get all that stuff in that store, but I'm glad they do! The staff seems to rise to whatever your level of expertise happens to be. They treat novices and experts with the same degree of knowledge and respect! To the bearded kid manning the customer service desk when I came in 2 weeks ago to pick up a pre-paid item...you need a serious lesson in Customer Service 101. Fiddling with your computer while never once looking the customer in the eye and acting like you'd rather be anywhere else is unacceptable behavior in my book -- or anyone's, I would imagine. Your stupid joke about "We don't carry that...just kidding" would have you fired if I were the manager and overheard that shit. You're not funny, just another jerk who hates his job. You should be mopping the floors, not manning the customer service desk. I'll still come in to buy stuff, but will avoid you like the plague. read more

Over-rated for customer service, especially over the phone. Several of the old-timers are surly, incompetent and complacent in their position. They're clearly secure in their "lifer" status of employment at this Ace and don't try to be courteous or helpful. Their "go-to" response is often, "You need to come in". If you re-phrase the question to direct them to possibly being of assistance, you inevitably get a carbon copy response repeated, "You need to come in"! I am NOT some uninformed demanding slacker but I am often treated poorly when I call about details that would save me a long trip in from my ranch. Marty and others like him need to retire and allow a generation of more informed and enthusiastic employees assist folks. read more

In the last couple of years my DYI projects have multiplied in many directions and I've been inside Ashland Hardware almost every other day while I'm in town. It's the people, really, that make it IMHO, and their tips and information have made me look good around the house because because the Ace staff have made the difference between success or failure, I just honestly have to say. For me it's been lighting, plumbing, wiring, pest control, even automotive...when I'm unsure, I just ask, and I always get a good answer. Always lots of staff on the floor. I see a lot of local contractors there, so...I'm not kidding; they really have the staff, the tools, products, and a million hard-to-find parts...The manager even GAVE me an empty wiring spool to use with our Christmas lights. They can special order what is not in stock, but the store is exceptionally well-stocked. I love working with Jim T., Kathy, Carmen, Kelsey, and many others that I know by name. Most prices are very competitive. I like this place. The only problem I've encountered - there seems to be an issue keeping the small engine shop working smoothly.
