Love coming here with the kids. Check-in has always been quick and easy. There is a game room for the kids in the waiting room but we have never had a need to use it as they are usually in the dentist chair in just a couple minutes after check-in. There are TVs on the ceilings to keep the younger kids entertained during the exam. And the hygienists have always been knowledgeable and give me a heads up of what they will be doing that day before they even start. Dr. Patel's office staff is awful. By far the worst office staff i have ever dealt with in a medical practice EVER. I am so sad to be writing this review. We LOVED it here until the scheduling got mixed up by his office manager THREE TIMES. I even asked for Dr. Patel to please call me back personally to resolve the matter and keep us as OUT OF POCKET paying clients. Apparently my business means nothing to him as he refused and once again his manager said she could handle my appointment. (if she could handle it then why was is screwed up THREE times?!?!) I am VERY concerned by him not worried about clients who have now spent almost $10,000 in his practice in the last 4 years, we were set up for orthodontics and HONESTLY, I believe they cheated us out and had teeth pulled for NO REASON AT ALL! We have moved on and will no longer be visiting this establishment. Luckily I found a practice close by and the dentist herself reassured me and let me know she would always be willing to call back a client that's about to spend $5,000 as she knows its not like money grows on trees. Now that is customer service. Your office should take notes on how to treat your clients. Hopefully we actually get seen at our August 10th FINAL appointment because I have now taken off THREE days of work with nothing done yet. But also, not Dr. Patels problem because hes still getting my money. I was also told by the office manager when we reschedule i would have the very first appointment so I don't have to take the day off...... guess what.... That wasn't true either. Our son has been a client here for 14 years, the practice does have a bit of an assembly line feeling with many kids getting quickly seen, but has been okay for the first 12 or so years. Unfortunately, the service has been hit or miss over the years and has gone downhill recently. At age 14, our son needed sealants at an older age than normal, due to his back molars coming in late. The dentist charged us retail prices (without us realizing it.) When we received the Explanation of Benefits, the insurance denied the claim due to age (which we expected) but told us we owned HALF of the amount paid to the dentist. The dentist office representative, Prissy, said that they would NOT refund us the overpayment because the state of Virginia law allowed them to charge full price. Even though if he was 13, they would have accepted the negotiated rate from the insurance. Furthermore, because we were insured, we were not entitled to the 10% off that retail clients can receive. I feel it is very poor form to charge 100% more to a long time client. From speaking to our insurance carrier, I am also told they did not properly file the appeal with the important information that our son did not get his molars until age 14, which may resulted in the appeal not being denied. I am redoing the claim appeal myself and we will be changing dental practices. read more

I highly recommend Dr Patel and his staff at Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center. They treated both of my boys from toddler age right up to age 19. Besides the usual 6 month cleanings, they had cavities filled, molars sealed, teeth pulled, and braces. Flat screen tv's are in the waiting room and at each treatment chair and kids can pick from among hundreds of movies to watch while they wait. I recently took my 3 year old and 18 month old for appointments. The staff was so welcoming and the office is great for the kids. Miss Rachel was even able to do a cleaning, floss, and fluoride my 3 year old and kept her smiling the whole time! my 3 kids love this place. I, as the parent who pays the bill, absolutely hate this place. It's not that I think they are too expensive as I don't it's just the office staff are the most unfriendly and uncoorporative people I have ever dealt with in a businss. When they owe me money because insurance paid more than they were expecting they sit on my refund for months. If I show up owing them money from another child's visit they demand their money immediately or else my other child can't be seen. I ask them to send me home with a bill and I will happily pay it that night through my HSA but that is not good enough. With all other businesses that is exceptable but not this place. While my instincts told me to have my infant's tongue tie addressed immediately, my pediatrician gave me the unfortunate advice of waiting until he was six months old. When I finally saw Dr. Patel, he explained that because we had waited so long and because our baby was more mobile and stronger, our options were not as simple and I felt like I was between a rock and a hard place. I was disappointed in myself for days. His office called and asked what I had decided, so I admitted being uncomfortable moving forward with either option. Dr. Patel, having discerned my baby's gentle temperment at our initial consultation, agreed to give us a chance to try the simple procedure that is traditionally suited for newborns with the agreement that if it wasn't going well, we'd call it quits. He was sympathetic to our situation, informative, patient and professional. We all breathed a sigh of relief when the procedure was over and rejoiced that it went so smoothly. He didn't have to do that. Most dentists wouldn't have touched our situation with a ten foot pole. Because Dr. Patel was respectful (and frankly selfless), we were able to address our baby's tongue tie prior to the onset of speech and avoid anesthesia. It was a unique situation handled very well. And, to boot, my four year old can't WAIT to have his teeth cleaned again. He LOVES it here. read more

Today my 5 children got their checkups and we had the most amazing time. Michelle had my 4 year old, who was extremely apprehensive at first, in fits of laughter and by the end my daughter wanted to stay! Jennifer was exciting and entertaining for 3 of my other children. She kept them happy and made this such a positive experience. She was able to connect with all of them on their levels, from my teenager to my 8 year old. Sabrina had the misfortune of taking care of my most difficult child. Most people would decide that she is just too difficult and I've even had a different dentist restrain her but NOT this incredibly​ skilled and child friendly team. They talked her down and kept her excited about her new princess sparkly teeth! I've never been to another dentist office that has cared so much about your child's experience. I took my 8 year old niece, whom I now have guardianship of to see Dr. Patel for a 2nd opinion. The first dentist who she was seen by at a different practice said she had at least 5 cavities and would require 4 crowns. My first impression of Dr. Patel's office was that it is beautiful. They have a teen area and a kid zone with an awesome arcade vibe. My niece was very excited to play while we waited to be seen. All of the receptionist were very polite and personable. I took copies of all the recent x-ray and office notes with me for this appointment.When we were called back again, the office is beautiful and spotless. All of the rooms have a nice flatscreen for the kids to watch a movie on. When we checked in at the front desk my niece got to pick her movie from a very large selection. The back office staff were amazing! They made her feel comfortable and agreed assured me that there is nothing wrong with getting a 2nd opinion. There are plenty of offices who will "over diagnose" and charge you and your insurance the most that they can. It made me feel so much better to hear that. Dr. Patel came in and was simply amazing! He thoroughly explained everything to me with great detail. Everything from a crown vs a filling to comparing her last x-rays to the ones she just had at his office. I genuinely felt in my gut his medical opinion was the best one. My niece ended up with only 2 crowns and 2 fillings. We returned for 2 separate appointments. During the 2 procedures on separate days she enjoyed watching her movie. Again, Dr. Patel explaining everything step by step. Always assuring my niece what a good job she was doing and if she felt any pain. Overall I had a wonderful experience all 3 visits. I will be transferring my son's to this office. I did not have any issues with billing. They were able to give me an estimate of what my portion would be reminded me that there is no guarantee on exact amount. With insurances you never know. Hello, I would stay clear of Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center. Although my children first had a great experience with Dr. Patel who cleaned their teeth for years. We recently had an horrific experience with Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center, that changed my view of them drastically. My two children had attended Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center for many years and we never had an outstanding balance of any kind. Then, we missed one appointment for a routine cleaning, and was charged $80.00 ($40.00 per child). I delayed paying the fee because I was between jobs, which is why I had missed the appointment to attend an interview. I began to look for work and resolved to pay the missed appointment fee when I could, but it was not a priority, as I had living expenses to pay first, before paying a missed appointment fee. Then to my surprise, I received a COURTS SUMMONS from plaintiff Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center, Ajit A. Patel, D.D.S., for the $80.00 missed appointment fee, plus Attorney fees!!! A sheriff actually served me with a civil claim at my home! I found it horrific and embarrassing that not only was I between jobs, but being sued by my kid's dentist for not paying the missed appointment fee!! I was angry at first, then grew saddened that Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center would take a mom to court for missing her child's dentist appointment. I called them immediately, thinking that I could simply pay the $80.00 and court fees, but they were rude, and insulting. They referred me to their "lawyer" and said they could not speak with me about the $80.00 balance because it was not in their "attorney's hands". Now the amount has ballooned to nearly $200.00 because of attorney fees and court costs. All of this over missing the appointment fee! I tracked down their attorney, who did not answer my calls or return my calls. So, I wondered how I was supposed to pay her the missed appointment fee. I now have to take off work and appear in court. That's a costly missed appointment!!! Needless to say, if you do attend Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center, be aware of our experience. I now know to really research and do more homework before selecting a dentist for my child. Not only is important to have a friendly dentist, but the entire office staff and operation must be ethical, sympathetic, and professional. He is proactive but gentle and caring and his staff is top-notch. We just left a cavity filling, which he managed to do without novocaine and minimal discomfort. Dr Patel and his medical staff is very good but Be carefull with Office Staff they Provide Wrong estimates and ask you to pay more later saying it was not covered by insurance company. Dr Patel is a very competent dentist and very good with kids. The facility is very kid friendly and office is state of the art, very cutting edge, my kids love it. However they really have the worst financial practices. Yes I know some offices collect based on estimates but there is no need when you have good insurance. The hassle of paying out of pocket for estimated costs then getting reimbursed months later when you have insurance is absurd. Also, when you don't confirm their appointment and their recordings say call us to cancel and you call to cancel, why are you being charged??? If they can stop nickeling and diming you I know they will be everybody's choice. read more

As far as the dentist and hygienists go at Ashburn Pediatric Dental Center, I have been very happy. They've been great with my kids and I have no complaints about the dentistry side. However, I do have a major issue with the billing department. As another reviewer noted, they make you pay their estimated fees at the time of service, before sending it to insurance. Last year I overpaid by $80 and it took 6 months to get my refund, only after repeated calls and showing documentation. Then this past January, my children had 5 different procedures done, and in each one, they needed something that was not covered by insurance (nitrous & sealants on baby teeth). In the past, my insurance would set the negotiated rate for these non-covered benefits and I would pay that. This time, I was told by the office manager that per Virginia law, they are allowed to charge the full amount for each non-covered service. So that meant $68 for nitrous versus the $43 on my Explanation of Benefits (x3 separate procedures). And $49 per sealant versus $29 on my EOB (x8 teeth). They did write off one of the $25 extra nitrous fees when I expressed my displeasure, but I still paid a total of $130 OVER what was reflected on my EOB for all the appointments. They may be allowed by law to charge their rate, but I feel that's morally questionable. I've switched to another dentist who assures me they go off the EOB. read more
