Asa's Place is great spot with great food. Had lemon with blue raspberry French toast . I'm not French toast person however Asa's place makes an amazing French toast. I have had this twice. Favorite breakfast meal at Asa's. Friendly fast service. Out back patio seating available as well, would love to sit there next time. Food was okay, but Asa seems a bit of a gruff, crabby ornery nasty old coot. Snapping at the overworked girl scurrying around frantically. He wouldn't make eye contact to greet me at all. When I tried to speak to him, his response was "what!?" (as in wtf do you want?). I figured I'd try for a friendly exchange on the way out and said food was good thanks. We've been to Asa's several times in the past year. Breakfasts are outstanding, they always hit the spot. Also did a takeout one evening consisting of meatballs & chicken parm -- it was excellent too. Asa is a friendly and personable guy, he's often a "One Man Show", but he takes care of everyone and you know you'll get a quality meal when you drop in. The experience was not good. Ordered breakfast and it was prepared without proper experience. Eggs had way too much milk in them. The (cheap quality bacon) was burnt. Decent food, broad selection. No mimosas or alcohol. Slow service even though there were only 3 tables seated. Owner was very aggressive, and very demanding of the server. While she was in the middle of writing down a table's drink order (who had been waiting 20+ min), he yelled at her to "put those people on hold and come grab this!", the server immediately dashed inside instead of doing the right thing by being assertive to her rude a$$ boss and finishing their order first. She was inside for at least 10 more minutes before returning to the table to complete their DRINK orders. They were not served water upon sitting either, nor were we. The server did refill my coffee which was nice and she had a pleasant attitude, unlike her boss. Took a long time to bring the check out, seemed very distracted. Definitely room for improvement or maybe need to hire more staff! She seemed to be the only server working. Always leave a nice tip! 2:30 Sunday, walked in there was one couple by the door and myself walking to the empty counter. Old man / cook never greeted me. Sat down and waited untill he finished cooking AND serving the other couples food. He simply said what would you like, water and a meatball wrap. ABSOLUTELY the most disgusting thing I have ever eaten (beets are the next thing) Meatball tasted like bad sausage. That coupled with the smell of old burnt coffee coming from the pot I chose to sit in front of. I watched the guy pluck food from the grill and eat it with out gloves or washing his hands. Oh. My. God. Just no. We were going to try out another diner in town but after 2 couples were seated before us, we were told there is about a 35 minute wait. Called ASAs and they said there was no wait. Walked in the front door, not only no wait but about 20% full. Um ok. The waitress had cat hair all over her back. The menu was priced very similar to the nice breakfast place I was willing to wait for. The food was ok. If you are going to pay $13.50 for a 3 egg omeltte dont do it here. My food was passable. My wifes eggs were raw in the middle. This is an owner of Louie's Across the street. He sold lunch foods and had a big hot dog. Decided people like breakfast better, so he took his hot dog across the street when the location became available. From the owner, to the cook, to the waitresses, there is no dedication to cleanliness or quality. Its the typical greasy spoon, except even a greasy spoon can be very good. This was not. As we sat, the place became more empty as the locals who were on the deck before us finished their cigarettes and paid and left. Yet, our food - 1 omelette each exactly the same, with the same toast and homefries, took about 20 minutes. The coffee was burnt, and the waitress asked if we wanted each item. The menu lists that the omelettes come with toast and homefries. -Do you want toast? -Do you want toast? -Do you want homefries? -Do you want homefries? Come. on. The most expensive item on the menu seems to be expensive for no good reason. The "hungry-man" breakfast is the same 13.50 (3) egg omelette with (1) extra egg for 3.50. Yep. You are paying 3.50 for an egg, when the rest of the breakfast comes out to 13.50 with 3 eggs. Figure that one out. If this place was in Tijuana and the meal cost $3.50, Id recommend it. I'm in love with the stuffed sausage and gravy waffle. It came with a side of sausage and gravy that I used to dip each bite of the stuffed waffle. Cannot rave about this place enough. Its small but mighty. They are the breakfast spot in town to visit. We had Melanie as our waitress she was so personable and attentive. We had a large party of 20 and she was super attentive. My husband and I got there early and the owner came out to meet our son and chat with us. What a gem! Asa's is a nice small diner in the center of Winsted. It's the only place in town to get a reliably perfect breakfast, and the bacon-egg-cheese sandwiches to go are off-the-charts delicious without being smothered in Crisco or margarine. read more

Unfortunately we had a terrible experience at this restaurant. We were a party of 6. Two Moms and four kids stopping in on our way home from a ski trip. We waited over an hour for our food with zero explanation or apology. Another table of four had to leave after waiting 45 minutes with zero food on the horizon. When we asked why it was taking so long we were told there was only one person making the food, who was the owner, Asa. What was particularly irking was that numerous two tops and counter customers came after us and finished their meals before we got food. Clearly there are regulars he didn't want to keep waiting. Our first two meals came out an hour after we ordered, with two more following ten minutes later and one more ten minutes after that. One meal was forgotten completely. The owner never came out to apologize or explain, leaving it to a flustered waitress. I complained and they took two meals off the bill to the tune of $17. Our bill was still $82. I went to the counter to complain to the owner that I didn't think this was adequate for the terrible service. He argued with me and refused to take any more off the bill. A regular customer (at the counter who came in 40 minutes after us and was finishing his meal at this point because he took precedence over us) offered to pay our bill. I told him he was missing the point and it wasn't about the money but rather the poor service. We took our bill and paid (and tipped) and used the bathroom one more time only to watch the owner complaining to another regular about us. I said as we walked out that his customer service was terrible and he had treated us badly and the customer now started yelling at me and my friend to be quiet and leave. It seemed that Asa's regular customers were extremely put off by two women daring to complain about how they were treated. We left as there was no satisfactory end to this and I regret paying the bill that was presented. Bottom line it was a terrible experience and I don't recommend going there unless you and Asa are friends. read more
