California Roll, cucumber roll, Boston Roll

Lunch special any 2 rolls - $17.95 (3 rolls - $21.95). They were SO nice and gave me an extra cucumber roll! It was delicious. Small, cozy, unassuming (5 or 6 total tables inside), and just what you need for a little sushi pick me up. Miso soup was delicious, great amount of tofu! Really a wonderful surprise as I was walking around in the neighborhood.

Tried their sushi and salmon skin salad. They were fresh and well made. Sushi was decent, nothing special. Salad had nice amounts of fried salmon skins and lots of greens and cucumber strips. Prices were reasonable and delivery was quick.

Chef's Specialty Bora Bora Roll - sweet shrimp inside with eel and avocado... very tasty!
Kevin A.

Dropped into Asakuma on Robertson last night, a tiny hole in the wall sushi restaurant with little character and a few tables, mostly to go and delivery here. At the cashier's recommendation, I try the "Bora Bora Roll" off the "Chef's Specialty Rolls" section of a rather large and daunting menu. It's sweet shrimp wrapped in eel with avocado and such. For $16 it was tasty enough and well assembled, the eel was a little drier than I like, but it did the trick in a pinch after a movie. Something nice happened when I mentioned I was still hungry... As it was the young man behind the counter's last night working there, he treats me to a spicy tuna atop fried rice with jalapeño slivers on top. They are very good and I liked how the crispy rice is shaped like a small round muffin, cooked to be quite crispy and golden brown. The act alone is getting me to bump up the 3/5 star rating a point to being 4/5 stars. If you're looking for a solid pick-up place for sushi and you happen to live close by, this place is pretty good!

E05. Kiku Combo
Rob J.

Was in the mood for sushi and found this place from GrubHub. Was it the best? No. Was it good? Mostly! Ordered the Kiku Combo, salmon sushi, and hirame. The combo was pretty tasty - the salmon sushi was by far the tastiest. The hirame was sadly disappointing. Uni was ok, the albacore was not my favorite. Ultimately a decent spot.

OMG a fly on my food I refuse to eat it. I called the restaurant and the manager refused to talk to me. They did not want to give me a full refund on my order. My staff refuse to eat because of the animal that was in the teriyaki! Disgusting! We are very upset with service provided. Do not come here.

The food there is pretty good but the time it takes for the food to come out is amazing because it only takes about five minutes.

My friend and I were a bit boozed out from the night before, so we stuck with a handful of sharable platters including California rolls and ceviche, all tasted amazing. Nothing was too heavy and the portions were all manageable, not too small or too large. The outdoor seats were very cushy and comfortable, it's perfect for sitting with your fur baby, and the restaurant provided water bowls upon request as well. Servers were all really friendly and the food did not take long to come out, though it wasn't too busy that Sunday afternoon around 3pm. Would definitely come back here to try the cocktails with other fusion bites next time we're in the area!

We ordered rolls, salads, ceviche, and pasta, but everything was just okay--nothing memorable. We had to ask for wasabi and ginger three times, and the server seemed confused. Service overall was friendly but very slow, and the restaurant wasn't even full. The pasta was a miss, and the "salad" wasn't really a salad. Drinks were the highlight--great martinis and well-made cocktails. That said, our bill was over $600, and none of us left full. Portions are tiny. Go for drinks and ambiance, but I'd skip the food.

We made reservation for a weekday dinner and got seated quick. FOOD Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna (8.3/10): *9 with the Serrano pepper A must have for appetiser whenever I go to a sushi restaurant. Love the presentation, it's easy to eat. Fresh tuna, great rice to tuna ratio. Wish there's mini jalapeño or Serrano pepper on top for more depth. For the cold dish specials, we ordered Yellowtail Jalapeño and Toro Yuzu Miso to share: Toro Yuzu Miso (9/10): Ponzu sauce in here is so nice! Love the citrusy touch to balance out the fatty toro. Love the mini sprouts garnish that balances out everything in here. Yellowtail Jalapeño (9.2/10): Very well balanced, along with the cilantro garnish everything compliments each other so nice! Love the Serrano pepper (I transferred one onto the crispy tuna rice and that's delicious!). Fish is super fresh, melts into your mouth ^Both cold dishes are excellent but I prefer this slightly more. Nigiri (8-8.5/10): All nigiri's are pretty good, we ordered a bunch of it. Our favourite one is definitely the Akamutsu, it has the toro texture and it's not usually seen everywhere. Scallops, Blu fin toro, salmon are top tier. Ikura was good but not amazing. Lobster ceviche taco (9.5/10): MY FAVOURITE OF ALL! The lobster is so fresh, the seasoning is refreshing and citrusy. With the hard shell taco, everything just puts together so nice that we had to encore this! (I believe the lobster ceviche is off-menu, our server recommended us to substitute with lobster, good call!) DRINKS For drinks. They have an extensive sake collection, we had the Nobu sake which is pretty smooth and nice. Service is great, our server knows the menu well and gave the right recommendations. Food comes in on time and in great orders. SERVICE & AMBIENCE Love the warmth hospitality, also love the Nothing special about the interior decor, Japanese light wood ambience. It's a very cozy place to have dinner with, ambience is clean and not with loud music. Nothing instagramable, I think this is more of a food-focus place, rather than a special occasion spot. For the way how they market themselves I feel like the service or the plates could go an extra mile to make it a better experience. I've never been to Nobu, but this restaurant lives up to the standard. Recommend, might not be everyone's #1 sushi place but you won't go wrong with this place. I'm not sure if this is a place for omakase or rolls/ handroll, but their raw fish and nigiris are nice.

Most, if not all, the fish and ingredients were flown straight from Japan. Everything tasted so fresh and delicious! My favorites were the shirako and monkfish liver nigiri since these are delicacies that you don't see often in omakase menus in the US! I was so excited to see such variety thru out the meal. I would recommend coming to Yasu for any special occasion and you will get to eat some amazing sushi here. The overall ambience was fancy but also welcoming and comfortable. The value and service you get here is phenomenal and it's one of the better priced options for omakase in LA.

This location actually had the Hirame sushi which was so exciting since we haven't been able to get it at any other locations in years since it's always sold out. The service was quick and they were kind. I will say the busier it got the less attentive they were and forgot to fill our water and ginger. Though I love sugarfish, the proximity of your table to others will always be really uncomfortable and awkward for me as people literally have to press up against your table to sit in the booth directly next to you which has always been really weird to me. But the food was great as always. It's sadly over $100 for us to get the trust me and nozawa trust me which feels pretty high but the quality of fish is always exceptional.

NOTE: Dined in on 10/27/24…read more Definitely want to write a couple of reviews before the end of the year to shine some light on restaurants that really need some more love here on Yelp. Rockpool sounds a little generic for a sushi spot, but the quality of the fish is quite delicious for the value. In particular, the lunch omakase is probably amongst the best sushi deals I've had for a sitdown spot. I'd definitely take it into consideration over let's say... Sugarfish. People often talk about how "fresh" fish tastes at sushi restaurants, but I feel like the best raw fish is often aged to an extent. The taste of the fish here is good, but I don't feel that they always use the best cuts. For example, the otoro was tasty, but it was not as marbled as I'm used to seeing. That said, another critically important and often overlooked component of sushi, particularly in handrolls and nigiri, is the rice. The rice here is delicately warm, pairs well with the fish, and has a pleasant, slightly sweet and vinegary taste. Simply delightful. The miso soup was also quite delicious, with a hearty, deep, set of flavors in the soup stock, and the scallop hand roll here was so good, I forgot to take a photo before devouring it haha. The lunch special should be enough food for most folks, but you're always welcome to add additional items to it! Now, is it good enough for me to try the more expensive dinner courses? Debatable, but it might be... just barely! The value proposition is hard to ignore, though. It's certainly one of the best deals you'll find on the Westside.
