Asahi Sushi is such a gem in Olympia and honestly gives me hope that there really is good sushi around here! I've been twice now: once on a date with my husband and another time for a family outing, and both experiences have been fantastic. The prices are fair. I wouldn't call it cheap, but it's definitely not outrageously expensive either, especially for the quality. We usually spend around $100 for two orders of takoyaki and three sushi rolls. I came for the sushi, but apparently I'm staying for the takoyaki and the fantastic service. Seriously, the takoyaki here might be the best I've ever had. They're served at just the right temperature, crispy on the outside, savory, and actually have a good amount of octopus in each ball. My husband agrees, which is why we always end up ordering TWO orders. We can't help ourselves. The sushi itself is delicious and really well balanced. I don't feel like the rolls are overloaded with rice, and every roll we've tried has had a good balance between the fish, sauces, and other ingredients. Nothing feels like it's drowning out everything else. Both times we've visited, the service has also been wonderful. The servers are attentive and friendly, and good service is one of the reasons I enjoy coming back. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, especially around the entrance where you're practically passing right by the chefs. But I actually like the lowkey, humble atmosphere. During the day, it's fairly dim inside with just a sliver of sunlight peeking through, and the neutral tones make it feel cozy without trying too hard to be fancy. My only gripe has nothing to do with the restaurant itself: PARKING. Downtown Olympia parking is such a pain in the neck. You might find yourself circling a few blocks looking for street parking, but Asahi is one of those places where I'll deal with it because the food and service are worth the trip. I've been to plenty of sushi places in California, so after moving to Washington a few months ago, I've been hoping to find a sushi spot here that could compare and that I would actually want to return to. Asahi is definitely that place. It's officially my go-to sushi spot in the area whenever I can afford to treat myself, because if I'm coming here, I'm budgeting enough to try and tip the servers well too. Great sushi in a convenient location. To enter, you have to walk past the sushi bar where the chefs stare at you. Sitting there to eat would probably be awkward with every patron passing behind you. We got the Paradise and the Hurricane rolls. The Paradise was good, but the Hurricane won hands down. Sweet and savory, crunchy and creamy, with a touch of spiciness, this was the complete package. Highly recommend. The bathroom is outside of the restaurant through a winding corridor of backrooms. It's unsettling, and then the restroom itself is lit in a sickly yellow. Our server was very friendly. We got the crab rangoons and I did not like them. They seemed just to be cream cheese, but not much crab, or onion. Wish they would have been better because they looked great. If you are from local, or you are like me, don't care "contemporary" style and looking look for more authentic Japanese food. Please consider Asahi Sushi. (This place is so far my favorite in Olympia/ Lacey areas) From my observation, I guess the owner/ sushi chefs and kitchen chefs are either Korean or trained in Korean way. But don't take the idea wrong. If you go to Korean owned Japanese sashimi places, their sashimi are always good quality with thick pieces. I ordered 1 person / small sashimi order, it came out really good. I had 100% satisfaction. I also ordered Hamachi Kama (grilled yellowtail collar), it came out good, as well, just the presentation is different from Japanese style, but again, it didn't matter, because the quality and quantity were all good. Got chicken Karaage for my kiddo, but it didn't taste like regular chicken karaage, and we ended up packing it home. I enjoyed Takosu (octopus salad), but the restaurant named "sunomono with octopus". It came out really sunomono with 3 pieces of octopus. I shouldn't complain, but the salad/ cucumbers were not even sunomono. It was vinegar dressing, I guess. Little disappointed. Overall, the food quality is good. If you are craving sashimis like I did, please try Asahi Sushi's sashimi platers, you will think it's worthy. One thing sounds odd to me. When I ordered regular sashimi plate, it came out with Miso soup. Funny thing is, I didn't see tofu or wakame seaweeds in the soup. The waitresses ( I couldn't believe and checked with 2 waitresses) told me with tofu only for to-go miso soup. But WHY?? To-go doesn't have to pay tips, but I PAID TIPS WHEN DINING IN. No clue about the idea, but miso soup with only white miso flavor with a few green onions were floating on the surface, I don't really understand. Parking can be difficult in downtown Olympia. You'd better reserve at least 1.25 hours of parking during lunch time. And thanks sushi chefs for the yummy raw fishes. (Will update in the future for more dishes) read more

I called them to see why my bill was so high, and they take no responsibility for online prices. Not impressed. Crab Rangoons - I will be back for these amazing morsels. Five stars just for these amazing appetizers. We had the sushi: ahi roll, Las Vegas roll, rainbow roll, and downtown roll. The portions were small compared to the price, however, the flavor was nice and the fish was tender and fresh. Having come from Arizona, I figured we would find the best sushi ever. This was our first attempt at Washington sushi and it was okay. I did not take photos because it was pretty basic sushi. The restaurant is a nice size and not overly loud. The wait staff was fantastic and friendly. We will be back to try other items and perhaps ask for suggestions from the staff.
