This is a second hand review - sort of... I've been a patron of Arturo's since 1991 when my friend lived down the block. It's crowded, it's occasionally stuffy. You may have to wait - but man - one of the last coal fired pizza ovens in New York City and live Jazz? What could be better? Now it's not changed much - my son was just there at my behest. Still the classic sit down pizzeria. If feels like the old jazz spot it is. Now you can order a lot of items on the menu, but pizza is where they shine. The rest of the menu can be hit or miss. The desserts are expensive-and you only order them (and a nice espresso or cappuccino) if you plan to stay after dinner for the live jazz. Otherwise there are many other nearby choices as good or better. So the move is early evening pizza, a dessert and coffee, and live music! At Arturo Oven Pizza we had the best pizza, great piano players, the best front booth seat and the most amazing server name Scott. For the time you enter this eclectic corner pocket of New York you are brought into every era of art style simultaneously. Every genre was addressed and curated all together over many decades. A paper machè MOTH was suspended above there lively patrons accompanied with a Parisian hot air balloon from the 1890s. There are paintings ; some slight sketches of the human buttocks, or a mime's face being held by a hand with the caption 'A Helping Hand' or a nude woman laughing hysterically with a cat in her lower lap. There are various drawings of stars like Frank Sinatra, and photos of Clark Gable as Rhett Butler from Gone With The Wind as well as French Monet prints framed works of bored-to-death rich women. include unknown pictures of local crooners or more recently known celebrities such as Nick Lachey from 98°. Many hanging plants swing above the most hodgepodge collection of statues from every sculptor who ever sculpted is paid homage to here. The red neon Bar area ( crowned with upside-down musical notes ) and piano is teaming with fun characters as this place attracts that. The food smart well-made, and arrives quickly to the table the Chianti perfect but the star of the evening was once again, Mr. Scott, who made our night by making us feel like a fun artsy offbeat local. Walked up to Arturo's during Thursday dinner around 8PM and got seated instantly. The restaurant looks smaller than it is (has two other rooms)!! The ambiance was great -- cozy Italian restaurant with live music. Food was good as well. Can't attest to the other dishes because I only got pizza, but the pizza was delicious. read more

*Unofficial "highly rated NYC pizza" trail review* Having lived in CT until college, New Haven coal-fired pizza was the standard I grew up with. At the time I was unaware that I was unknowingly ingesting the pinnacle of US-based pizza, and it's very hard to find that particular style, done right, outside of that state. Arturo's is as close as I've come (in recent memory) -- we had two pizzas and a calzone (spoiler alert, that's way too much for three people) -- one cheese, one with toppings, and the calzone with meatball. Going in reverse order: Calzone: Great dough, great crunch, far too much cheese. It was delicious but the meatball got lost. Pizza #1: The cheese was great once dolled up a bit. The crunch, the crust, and the sauce were all excellent but it lacked in the salt department. A pinch of salt, some oregano, and some hot pepper flakes took care of that. Pizza #2: Cheese, sausage, onions, peppers, basil, pepperoncinis. The toppings gave the pizza the salt it needed and this was a fantastic pie. I was impressed that the dough held up the same as pizza #1 despite all of the extra weight. We came for the pizza and nothing more, but much of the menu looked worth exploring. The $50 bottle(s) of Dolcetto d'Alba was an excellent value and the service was quick (but not too quick, they did a great job of spacing out our courses). Oh, and there is a literal tub shower in the bathroom should you decide to hardcore freshen up mid-meal. Weird, but interesting. read more

Arturo's is a standout in a city with no shortage of classic quality pizza joints. It is an old fashioned and cozy spot, seemingly stuck in a time warp. While dark, it is friendly and welcoming, and the service was friendly and efficient. The old school Italian-American food is solid, featuring all of the standards. But the pizza is outstanding. Super thin crisp pies that have one of the best examples of pizza sauce in NYC. It is bright and delicious, more generously applied than othe local pizza singers but it is so good that id not a bad thing. read more

Old school, quintessential NYC Italian spot right where the Village meets Soho! I used to live down the street from Arturo's and frequented the establishment but it's been awhile. I recently came for dinner on a Thursday night and sat at the bar. The whole experience was amazing! The bartender Rob was friendly, entertaining and helpful. The food was tasty and plentiful. When I lived close by, I used to order the pizza a lot, which I always loved, but this time I got the chicken Milanese. I was happy with my choice. The restaurant has a lively energy and I love the huge piano in the dining room where a live band plays jazzy music. Place was pretty quiet on a Thursday night. We started off with fried calamari and stuffed clams and draft Guinness beers. The calamari was dry and stuffed clams were very bready. The drinks are a bit pricey for the ambience, and the Guinness was poured in a small water cup, not your classic beer glass. We got the Arturo's fiesta pizza. The crust was nice and crunchy, but a little bit too thick. What annoyed me the most was that I was finishing my slice of pizza, and the bus boy started clearing the table because the other two people I was eating with were finished, but he took my plate too when I clearly had pizza in my hand and then I had no where to put it down. I don't think I've ever experienced this in any restaurant before... the place wasn't even that busy so I don't understand what the rush was. read more

All things considered, this is the greatest restaurant in the West Village! The food is some of the finest Italian staples anywhere; the staff is one of the most professional and friendly in City; and the classic jazzy ambiance makes it one of Manhattan's most beloved places for unforgettable experiences. The range of this place is also amazing. You can be a local, a tourist, an adult or a kid, Arturo's will fit. The unique atmosphere that hearkens back to the days of the Golden Age of Greenwich Village makes for many happy Manhattan memories. Four generations of my family have been coming to this restaurant since the 1960s when in Manhattan both as residents and visitors. I decided to try this local pizzeria after reading about it in The Epstein Files. If this place is good enough for a billionaire it should be good for me! At first i thought Arturo's could be a code word for something sinister but then I looked it up and found out it's a real place. I started my meal with some calamari- it was so crispy and delicious. I also had a refreshing glass of white wine to wash it down. For my main I went with the shrimp Fra Diavilo with Clams. Tasty, fresh, and piping hot. Overall i had a good time and am glad that i found out about this place. read more

Hidden gem alert! This place should be more than its current 4.1 rating. This may now be one of my top 3 favorite pizza spots in the city. Usually I will pass on a 4.0 spot but I'm so glad I didn't on this Friday night. We were targeting Japanese spot nearby but we saw the pizza, live music, and had immediate seating so we decided to give it a try. Friendly service all around. Get the Arturo's fiesta for at least half and try something else for the other. The meatball pizza was good. My whole family enjoyed it and we took more to go. I can't wait to eat the leftovers now. Really cool, old school look and feel to the inside. Looks like it's been around for a while so I was looking forward to some quality food. We ordered the chicken parm with side salad and a large pizza, half cheese half meatball. The salad was standard and came out first. Chicken parm and pizza came out a few minutes later. The chicken was good, nothing outstanding but not bad. The pizza was disappointing. The dough was too soft, almost chewy versus crunchy. If I was in the area I'd go back for drinks and music, would probably skip the food. read more

Wow! We stumbled upon Arturo's after having a drink nearby and wandering around NYC. My partner and I were craving jazz and steak, and somehow we found this gem--no reservation needed! We grabbed seats at the bar, where a live jazz band was playing "Just Smile." The steak, topped with a delicious marinara sauce, was incredible, and the Shrimp Scampi with fettuccine was absolutely perfect. Food is good and a very cool vibe, but went with a few friends and had a horrible experience with one of the waiters. Took my friend after going to Arturo's a few times and he ordered the most expensive item on the menu, the strip steak. The waiter misheard how he wanted it cooked, which is a fair mistake. When my friend asked for a steak cooked as he ordered the waiter started mocking him. This continued when the new steak was brought out. The manager was very nice and helped resolve the issue, but with this level of service it is not worth visiting. Much better service for this quality and price of food in SoHo and The Village. I'm not one to complain, but being mocked as a respectful customer at a semi expensive restaurant is absolutely ridiculous. Great food! I always come here when in NYC. Excellent customer service they make sure you're happy. Try the spice rum and coke The only downside and thing they can't control is the loud ass people that come in and dine as well. They have live music but you get-20 year-olds in there, screaming across the table at each other, trying to have a conversation with each other instead of enjoying the great restaurant ambience and music. I ate at Arturo's about 5 years ago on a business trip. The food was so delicious I've been thinking about it since. On my recent visit to NYC, stopping here was a must! I made a reservation on Yelp, which was very easy. They seated us promptly. They had live jazz music, which was nice.The service is top notch! Our server was great, but there were other staff members continuously filling our waters and clearing plates. We started with a small cheese pizza. The sauce was amazing, tons of cheese and the crust had a nice crunch. I had the chicken marsala with pasta. It was SO good! A large portion of 3 chicken cutlets and pasta. The sauce had the perfect marsala taste consistency, not too winey. Their complimentary bread with oil/balsamic is very delicious. Overall if was exactly how I remembered! I called the day before about needing reservations. I was told they do not take reservations and we should get to the restaurant early as it was first come seating. When we got to the restaurant the bar was mostly filled but in the bar room they had 4 open tables. We were told they only had bar seating. We came in from Maryland for our anniversary and picked this restaurant for the jazz music which was to start at 7PM. As we couldn't get any table or bar seats together we left. The whole dining experience was terrible - from the waiter, to the seating, and the experience. The waiter did not respond to what was being said instead he was rude and dismissive. The pizza lacked flavor with some of the basil being old and burnt. At one point the waiter tried to berate my friend and get into an argument with him - all while other guests are dining. Tons of better options in the area with better quality ingredients and taste. It's been FAAAR too long since I've visited (5+ years?). Arturo's has always been in my top tier, date I say top 3, pizza joints in NYC. I'm a born & bred NYer so I knows my pizza! I ordered a margarita pizza from our server, Lupé, and we also had the penne alla vodka & spaghetti alla vongole. The coal brick oven cooked pizza was served hot with a crispy crust, fresh mozzarella and basil & a wonderfully charred underside. Just as I've always had at Arturo's in the past. I tasted both pastas & they were equally delicious. We enjoyed the live pianist & bassist throughout our meal. The decor hasn't changed in the last 20+ years. Including the bathroom complete with tub! Lupe was personable, busy but always available to us. I suggest bringing cash as you'll save 3% on your bill if you don't use credit. My fav spot in the city where you might run into a celeb or 2. Go see Scotty on a Thursday night who runs a great experience of food and entertainment there. I always park my bike out front and he takes care of us. You will not only get amazing food, but free entertainment from some of the top musicians in the city.............Great place, Great food, Great owners........what else you want in NYC. Loved this place. It's one of my wife's old hangs when she lived here in the 80's so it was a must stop. She says the place hasn't changed at all.... Including the restroom with the bath tub. It's an old converted house. The meat and cheese platter, the arugula salad, the penne bolognese and the special pizza were all wonderful. I had the green pepper and onion pizza for takeout. I enjoyed the crispy crust, peppery flavor of the tomato sauce, and the hearty layer of cheese on top. The small pizza is enormous, which justifies the cost of $26. The pizza was prepared pretty quickly as well, maybe in about 20 minutes. We were in the mood for "red sauce Italian". We found it at Arturo's. We picked it because of the potential to hear live piano music, and we were happy to see someone ticking the Ivories when we got there. The place is pretty loud, and if you aren't seated at the bar or in the main dining room, the piano is hard to hear. Still, we are always happy to support live music. We ordered baked clams Arturo (with seafood), arancini, veal marsala, and veal Antonio (veal and eggplant parm). The clams were fine; the addition of shrimp to the baked stuffing was nice. The arancini were meh; I wouldn't get them again. The mains were HUGE (big enough for two hungry people to share), and we chose cheese ravioli as our side pasta, so the dishes were even more fulsome. All in, $100 for food, music, atmosphere, and a $5 tip to the piano player. Recommended for solid southern italian food with the potential to hear some live music. read more
