My fiancé and I recently visited Artinian Jewelers in Lexington, MA, and I feel compelled to share my experience. Twenty-five years ago, I purchased a gold setting from Artinian at the Jewelers Building in Boston (which they are no longer located in) for a diamond ring that had been passed down to me by my grandfather. The ring had a damaged setting, as my grandfather--being 'old school'--had cracked it while trying to adjust the size himself with a pair of pliers, fearing that jewelers would replace the original diamond (an old miner's cut) with a cubic zirconia, which was apparently a common practice back then. Despite this, I had a positive experience at Artinian and regarded them as a reputable jeweler, one I would frequently recommend to others and trust with my own jewelry. Fast forward to today, and the ring no longer fit me, needing resizing and the prongs reset. My fiancé also had a ring enhancer that was too small to wear with her engagement ring and needed resizing. We thought this would be a simple request, as ring resizing is a standard service for any jeweler. So, we weren't expecting to leave without knowing the cost of the repairs. However, we were surprised when Artinian asked us to leave not only the two rings for resizing but also my fiancé's engagement ring for them to "determine the size of the enhancer." This didn't make sense to us, as they had already taken measurements of the ring, and we were only requesting an estimate at that time. Nevertheless, we complied, leaving the rings behind and were told we would be contacted with estimates. Three days passed without any communication, and we grew increasingly unsure about whether resizing the enhancer made sense, as it depended on the cost. I called to inquire about the estimate and was told by a woman on the phone that she was unfamiliar with our job but would look into it and get back to us--presumably the same day. But no call came. For three days in a row, we called, each time being promised a callback with an estimate, yet no one followed up. My fiancé, now feeling uncomfortable without her engagement ring and growing frustrated, wanted to visit the store and get the rings back. While I had previous positive experiences with Artinian, she had never dealt with them before and was less forgiving of the poor service. She felt it was best to part ways with them and find another jeweler. At the end of the day, with still no estimate in hand, we visited the Lexington location. We explained to the desk staff that we had dropped off our rings for an estimate a week earlier, called multiple times to follow up, but had not received any response. One of the women behind the desk then informed us that estimates typically take a week. I questioned how long the actual work would take if estimates took that long. At that point, the goldsmith from the back suddenly stood up, angrily approached us, and said, "Go find another jeweler." He accused us of "barging in" and demanded that we leave the store. Clearly, there was no intention of offering an apology or taking responsibility for the lack of communication and poor customer service. The situation escalated when I asked to speak to the owner. The goldsmith quickly replied, "You don't need to know who the owner is," and insisted that we leave immediately. I told him that I would be sure to share my negative experience with my friends and family, and I asked him how this behavior benefited the business. He had no response. In a highly competitive industry, pushing customers away like this is a surefire way to harm the business in the long run. It became evident that the goldsmith was stressed and overworked, taking his frustration out on us, the customers. This is not a recipe for success. My initial visit to Artinian was based on a positive experience from many years ago, but it is clear that the business has changed since then--and not for the better. The current staff seems disengaged and has lost sight of why they are in business: to provide a service that makes people happy. Jewelry is purchased for special occasions, to celebrate important moments, and this experience completely soured me on Artinian. I will never return, and I encourage others to read this review and others that share similar negative experiences. It's important to carefully consider whether you want to trust your valuable jewelry to a business that clearly doesn't prioritize customer service or satisfaction. Upon reviewing other negative feedback, many of which share my concerns about poor customer service, I noticed that the Owner of Artinian has responded. However, rather than taking responsibility, the responses focus more on offering an explanation for why the problems occurred. When a customer reaches the point of leaving a review, an explanation feels irrelevant. Disenchanted customers like myself have already moved on, as there are plenty of other skilled jewelers in the area who value their customers. read more

So updating my review since someone responded: "the woman you have there that is 40 year employee is not the one that serviced me and the one that did lost her temper with me, thus the full reason for bad review! The other jeweler who fixed my watch told me tool was broken of and a piece was stuck in the watch and the pin holding the link was also broken thus the reason your 'so called jeweler' could not get it out! and leaving my watch not ok as the first thing she said was "I'm not sure I know how to do this one" So after she struggled for a bit, got infuriated with me for standing at the counter after she she insisted I sit, which I have a right not to do, she said, after getting tool stuck: "well leave it and I will have a jeweler fix" Well at that point it was obvious she was doing something way beyond her means and I insisted on the watch back and she just kept saying go run errands, but I did not have errands to run! read more

I have been to Artinian countless times. I have been coming to this store since I was three years old helping my father pick out a gift for my mother in celebration of my forthcoming baby sister. I've had items engraved, items repaired, seen my mother's engagement ring resized beautifully. Last fall, I came to Artinian to purchase a wedding ring for my now-husband. Throughout my life, my family and I have purchased or brought our most precious pieces here for repair, and we have always found that Artinian Jewelery has done business with the utmost integrity. I see some negative reviews here, and it just doesn't sound anything like the lifelong experience I've had with this jewelry store. I'm quite confident reading these anecdotes that either miscommunications or a rare but honest mistake occurred-- this is not a jeweler that will take advantage of you or nickel and dime you. I brought in a ring to be sized smaller, which went without a hitch - a pretty simple task. My second request was for them to combine a too-small wedding band with a three-stone diamond ring. I wish I had read the yelp review before I brought my jewry in for repair. I brought in a jade pendant which was given to me by my mom and had great sentimental value to me to the store for a larger jump ring. Told the lady the story and that the clasp on the pendant is platinum and I want the jump ring to be platinum and wielded together. It took 2 weeks for the store to get it done and charged me $30 for the small jump ring. No problem, as I know platinum is expensive and hard to work with. Then I noticed that only the jump ring would change color when I go swimming when the original clasp and chain ( also platinum) wouldn't. 6-7 month later, my 5 month old grabbed the pendant and yanked it off the chain. Initially I thought the chain gave. Then I realized that the jump ring had opened up. Now suspicious of the store's low quality work, I brought the pendant to a different Jewry store ( if you need any work done head over to Maynard Goddard Richard goldsmith, they do good honest work there). And Richard confirmed my suspicion: the jump ring is not platinum, not even white gold, but just plain silver. Yes. They charged me $30 for a small silver jump ring and passed it off as platinum. Dishonest and disgraceful. I want to shop local, buy local. But this is the last time I will ever spend any money at this store and I recommend you the same. I was seeking a local jewelry store to do some minor repair work on some basic items (not high ticket). I chose this store in the heart of Concord Center. I regret that I did. I brought three items in. 1) They could not locate a part for one watch---no problem, it's understandable. 2) They replaced the battery and replaced a pin in a 2nd watch, which cost me $31.00. They did not check about sizing and I had to remove links myself after spending $31 on repairs. I think this is at least double what it should have cost. 3) They restrung a silver beaded necklace that was sitting in my jewelry box. I asked for an estimate and they told me $20. It actually cost $36.00. I could not be more unhappy with this whole experience, and I will never return. When I called to respectfully express my dissatisfaction, the woman said that she hopes they'll do a better job next time. Sorry, there won't be a next time! read more

I had a necklace restrung. It took 2 weeks at about $25, which was fine. However, the shop charged me $34 (!) on a metal magnetic clasp. Clasps like these are about $5. I do not mind being charged double or triple the price, but a seven times surcharge is a little too much.
