I assumed I'd get a bit less money but wanted to support local businesses. So I was surprised and very happy when I got $65 for the gold. After this he did a job for me of modifying a gold chain to have inline stars of david. The work was perfect and the price was unbeatable. Brought in a pin to be made into a necklace and the results were not what I expected. I accept all blame because I did not make sure that what I believed to be the agreed upon path forward with the piece was mutually understood agreed to and captured in writing. Caveat emptor here to make sure there is mutual, written agreement about the exact work to be completed. The unfortunate part was that when I did question what was done, and what I believe was previously agreed to, and did so in a very calm and professional way, I was treated with disrespect and consternation by the son. Without even talking about my concerns, he rudely said that he would just remove the work they did and that I that could take the piece and leave. After questioning his approach, he did clarify that he was having a bad day and had many complaining customers that had come in before me. That statement alone should have been a warning sign. The son never apologized for his behavior, but the dad did take the piece and at least made some cosmetic updates to it while I was there. Would I go back, probably not. To reiterate - make sure everything you want done is clearly agreed to and in writing when dealing with this father and son team. read more

I found this place on yelp and went there to re-size my engagement ring. I am very happy that I made the right choice. My ring was a 7 and I was planning to downsize to 5. But Mr. Goddard persuaded me to make it 4.5. At first I doubted it might be too small, but turned out his suggestion was absolutely right. Honest pricing, he called me before completing work on a platinum ring because on closer inspection he noticed that the way the band was constructed would make the job more complex and raise the price of sizing it. I appreciate the information before the work was done. As for the quality of his workmanship, I'm very pleased. I used to work in Maynard, and not only used Richard Goddard for jewelry repair and ring re-sizing, but I also had him redesign a Victorian piece to something I wear more often. And lucky me, my husband twice commissioned him to make rings for me from some of the wonderful stones he finds. I am just delighted with the two rings that I just picked up at Richard Goddard, Goldsmith, Design . One ring needed repair - it was an old turquoise silver ring that is at least 50 years old. The band snap, and the bezel around the stone had come loose - I was unable to wear it. During the past 20 years I have asked numerous jewelers if it could be repaired - shops in Boston, Marblehead, and Concord. Every single one said 'no, impossible'. Richard did not hesitate, I am pretty sure it was one of those pain in the neck jobs for a jeweler to undertake, but Richard did not hesitate to take it on. The second ring needed a redesign. I explained what I wanted , and Richard did the work exactly as I had hoped.
