But all my friends were here, and I thought that to be taken seriously by the firms I was shooting for, I should choose a recruiter. Long ago in 2003 (a slump economy) I chose Law Dawgs, and they did a lot of pulling for me for temping, but I never landed anything permanent. This time around I made it a point to say I wanted full time, permanent, long term. And they interviewed me politely and I didn't hear from them at all for weeks. I contacted them periodically by e-mail to see if they'd forgotten I existed. When they finally called just once, it was to inform me of a position I'd already looked into, via my other recruiter, Shelly Langley, who was already on top of it. I had a feeling Shelly would work well for me because she'd been in the business before being a recruiter and was well connected with others in the biz about town. And in interview she just seemed .... shrewd and understanding at the same time. Prudent, I would say. Sharp. End result: I found a job that looked like a good fit - she agreed - and she connected me with the firm that hired me, AND AT MY SAME SALARY level as my former post, which was nothing short of miraculous. I think Shelly is THE BOMB. Don't waste your time with the others. You hunt down something you think you're a good fit for, and if she agrees, you can really do something!

My developmentally disabled son was fired because me, his parent, had expressed concerns about one of his job coaches being a good fit! Over the 3+ years at Enso, my son has probably had 8-10 different job coaches and this was the only occasion I voiced my concern. So basically they don't want any input from the people who know him best. When I went up the chain to get answers, I was dismissed. They are a bunch of unprofessional, disorganized, and disingenuous so called "professionals". Shame on them for their dishonesty.

I've thought for awhile about the resume support I received. In some ways it was helpful. In some…read moreways it was counter productive. Ultimately, both with a temp agency and a recruiter I was given the opposite advice of this service and had to redo my resume entirely twice. The person I was working with no longer lived in Washington and I wonder if not having someone local impacted the advice I was getting. In the end, the most important way to get a job is not a resume. The service I got was good enough but it was very expensive. I think relying on my existing networks and getting support from friends and peers and mentors would have saved me money. If you can't afford this service and you are feeling worried about your resume -- exhaust all other free and lower cost resources before this one. It's a vulnerable time when you're looking for a job. Be safe out there. Reaching out to your existing networks and community is always going to be the best way to get a job.
