Jessica Pearl is hands down AMAZING. I spent years (okay, always?) not caring about what my hair looked like one bit, but after that first time several years ago that I went to A+S and was paired with Jessica everything changed. My hair continues to look nothing short of incredible. My friends are jealous of how good it looks and I get compliments all the time... from strangers, even (which is weird, but definitely says something about how good my hair looks.) I also went to her recently for hair styling for a special event. I wanted something pin-up like and she basically plopped me down, and worked pure magic on my hair. I walked away about an hour and half later with some of the best victory rolls I've ever seen. Horrible experience.. Went in for highlights. Ivan spent no time listening to what I wanted, applied bleach all over and left me for too long. He fried off a 1" chunk of my hair that I noticed only after he had dumped me off to the blow dry girl (who was sweet and capable) and when she got him so I could ask him about it, he snipped telling me it was like that when I came in and left abruptly to continue work on someone else. I guarantee you it was not, and my hair and scalp were healthy prior. The girl finished drying me, and when I got to the counter to check out, my total was 2xs what I was quoted. Asked why, and oops the girl rang me up for two shampoos I didn't ask for or need. I checked out, went home and cried and then called in to talk to the owner, who not only challenged me, suggested I was lying and that I should come in to prove it to her the next time she was in the store. They left me feeling ashamed and angry and ugly and I'm super disappointed because I really wanted to like this place. read more

I had never been here before, and came in to get a haircut. I called the day of assuming they wouldn't be able to get me in, and the guy at the front desk happily got me an appointment. My stylist name was Mitra, and she did a great job! I love my hair cut and she was very easy to make small talk with. I will definitely come back to get a cut and not worry about someone cutting too much off. Oh- and she gives complimentary bang trims in between cuts, which is great. So here's the thing. I'm terrified of having my haircut. After a bad haircut two years ago, I haven't been able to let anybody touch my hair. And then yesterday happened. I had been contemplating a cut for a few months. My hair had gotten long and shaggy and was in need of some cleaning up. I put on my big girl pants and called Art & Science on a whim. I was new to the salon. I told them about my hair type and explained my fears. A few hours later, I was sitting in Guy's chair. Guy has quite possibly given me THE BEST haircut I've ever had. Seriously. He took all of my worries into account and assured me that he would give me a responsible haircut. I had been so afraid of any kind of change and I am over the hill that I let him work his magic. My hair is looking the best it has looked in a long time. I immediately received compliments on it from friends. I can't stop fiddling with it in the mirror and admiring his handiwork. Ladies with curls, put your hair in this man's hands. As someone with a super curly -- and often super unruly -- head of hair, I had yet to find a stylist who seemed to grasp what the hell they were doing when it came to cutting and styling my naturally curly hair. Then, I had an appointment with Becca at the salon's Wicker Park location, and I can honestly say that I will never go to anyone else! Aside from being incredibly personable and down to earth, Becca managed to meticulously cut and shape my hair into perfection -- first, when my hair was wet and again, after spending 15 minutes under the dryer. She also knew exactly what products would work with my hair and texture, but never tried to oversell or glamorize a product just to make an extra buck. As far as color goes, I go to Kacie, who does an equally amazing job. I've been dying my hair red for the past seven or so years, but I've gotten more compliments on my color since going to Kacie than ever before. Like Becca, she is also super friendly and knowledgable in her craft. I also loved the way that Kacie and Becca worked in tandem to create the look I was going for. While Kacie was applying my color, Becca came over to chat about what I wanted for the cut. The salon itself is trendy, well-kept and professional. I paid around $115 for both services (not including tip), which I find to be incredibly reasonable given the salon's upscale vibe and staff's expertise. I am NEVER coming back to this place ever again. I was told that to get the blonde ombre I wanted it would take a few sessions because my hair was jet black and that would be a process. (Totally understandable, I get it.) Stephanie worked on my hair and when she talked about ombres/bayalages it seemed like she knew what she was doing. I had RANDOM streaks of brown in my hair, and there were patches of brown and black horizontally like they were horizontal stripes. I was not happy. They told me to come in for a 2nd session and I wasn't going to be charged, thought it would be better and we talked more about ombres and how they looked like, after being told I was wrong I felt tension and not good vibes. At the end it was the SAME thing after the second session only the streaks that she bleached were lighter. VERY DISAPPOINTED that I spent $140 to have random streaks in my hair, I've had to wear my hair in a pony tail. Even over July 4th, I felt very ugly because of my hair. Steer clear of this salon! My mother had gorgeous hair and was looking to get her hair permed to curls. I called in on her behalf and was told that she needed to go in for a consultation first. We made the appointment and also took pictures with us of the "look" she wanted. The consultation lasted an approximate 5 minutes and we where told that her hair would look fabulous as they could get the exact curl she wanted. We set up another appointment and came in to get my mother's hair permed to tight curls. The experience was beyond horrific. Curl rods where placed in her hair, and she was left seated for a good 45 minutes with about one check up from the stylist. They then proceeded to remove the rods. I was standing next to her during this time and saw no kind of curl forming as the rods where removed. I saw the faces of both hairstylist removing them and they seemed to be questioning what was happening amongst themselves but assuredly said "beautiful curls". Halfway through the process my mother took her hair into her hands and began to panic. I also touched her hair...I was HORRIFIED. Her hair had NO CURLS and her hair was ELASTIC. She began crying. She was taken to the styling chair where the stylist STEVE took a diffuser and told her the curls where there even though there where NO CURLS. My mom was in TEARS. AND WHAT DID THE STYLIST STEVE DO???? HE WENT BACK AND LAUGHED IT OFF WITH OTHER CUSTOMERS AND STYLISTS!!!!! my mother's hair was destroyed and burned. She had to recruit to wearing wigs. She had to cut her hair completely off as it was destroyed to the roots. To this day, her hair is not the same. To this day we are working on a lawsuit against this salon for all the damages, expenses, and troubles (both physical and psychological) that my mom suffered. Beware....This place will ruin your hair. I must make this known to the public and customers. It doesn't deserve a star..it deserves to be closed down!!!! read more

I'm a 24 art student. Fairly speaking, I myself am a quite styled person and I know what I want and I know what's aesthetically good. It was a traumatic experience. I spend almost $300 on color and hair cut. My hair did not come out as what I wanted at all. The color was totally not right, and my hair was cut too short to be fixed now. The person who cut my hair kept saying how amazing my hair looked and how much he LOVES my hair, just to cover up how much he actually ruined it. Whatever. I've warned you. For years I've been getting meh-quality haircuts from supercuts or great clips. Groupon inspired me to try out a "real" haircut with Meredith, and I am now a client for life. I had some idea of what I wanted, but she knew how to take my nebulous description and nailed it. A week later I still feel like a million dollars. I understand in a week or two I can go back for a free clean up, which I'll happily do. You're offered a drink upon arrival, and hot face towels when they shampoo you. Maybe they just offer the hot face towels if you're chatty and they want you to shut up, I don't know. Either way it was great. Yay for Meredith! read more

I called to make an appointment with Guy (per the many positive Yelp reviews mentioning his name) and they gave me an hour slot. I was surprised that they could fit me in only 2 nights later. When I arrived they offered me coffee, tea, water, or wine which is a nice touch. The girls that greeted me were very friendly and Guy was right on time for my appointment. My hair is long and has big waves that I normally curl, the issue was that the layers were very uneven due to another stylist. He let me explain what I'm looking for and we talked for about 10 minutes before he washed and dried my hair. He cut it wet and touched up a couple small pieces once it dried as well. It was the best flow out of my life! The entire hour Guy was filled with recommendations on places for me to visit as I just moved to Chicago. I couldn't have been happier with the experience and with the cut. I will most definitely be back! I should also mention that I had been seeing the same stylist prior to this for over 8 years so initially it was not easy to switch; until I saw how fantastic the cut was! read more

It would be great if they had someone who can do brown people hair. I have natural curls that are really easy to manage (conditioner & finger comb that's it!) and once in a while I would like to get it styled. Except I can't find a single place that employs someone who has the skill to even try. I came here a couple months ago, asked if they had anyone who can do curly hair and they immediately said no and continued about their business. My current hairdresser is uber expensive so I thought I would give Art + Science a try at around $55. I already loved what my original hair stylist did with my length and layers so I only really wanted a trim from A & S. The first red flag was that there are no stylist bios on their website; this makes me think they may have a high turnover rate and also made it difficult for me to choose a stylist when I know nothing about any of them. The second red flag was that I was able to get an appointment within 24 hours or even the same day if I wanted (my original stylist has a waiting period of WEEKS)! The third red flag was that, when I arrived, the place was completely void of any other customers and I found my stylist grooming himself in the mirror. Nevertheless, I proceeded to explain to my stylist how I typically wear my hair (always air-dried, always voluminous boho waves) and put my trust in his hands. I ended up with one of those 90s haircuts where ALL the volume is thinned out with a razor and the front and side layers are visibly graduated, ew. Even a suburban soccer mom would consider this look outdated. To top it off the stylist blow-dried my hair stick straight and then proceeded to cut more layers...why would he do that when I told him I never wear it straight?! Hair that is curly needs to be cut with the curl in mind, hair that is wavy needs to be cut with the wave in mind and hair that is worn straight should be cut accordingly. So I left the place not even knowing what my haircut would look like when I wear it wavy, which was frustrating and not at all what I asked for. In addition, the stylist -though nice - divulged a little too much when casually discussing his private life (I personally don't mind that kind of thing, but I could see how another customer might). I'm never one to complain to a manager (it's embarrassing for all involved) but I do hope management reads this yelp review. I'm giving this salon two stars because it's a little unfair to give it 1 based on a single stylist. Indeed, perhaps the other stylists here are more proficient...I, however, will not be sticking around to find out. read more

I went on a Monday (for those of you who don't know, they offer free services in their Advanced Training Program - check out simplysalons.com) and had my hair colored a few times for free. The color jobs were always great, and my stylists were friendly, but I'd have to say that the desk staff was sort of rude both times I went. I felt as if I was at the DMV instead of at a salon - (i.e. "Next? That'll be $15" with no personality), which maybe is the result of the free day. Yay, a great haircut!! I have always been a little picky about my hair, and am always looking for a better haircut or better stylist. I was happy with my guy at Salon Buzz, but couldn't help but wonder if there was better, especially in a big city like Chicago, where there are fancy salons all around. So, based on the reviews on yelp I gave Art and Science a try and was so soooo happy with my cut and color. I got highlights done first by stephanie. She was super nice and did an excellent job. On the Art and Science website they have discount coupons for first time customers and even though stephanie is a senior colorist, I got 25% off since I was a first timer. I would highly recommend her, she did a great job. Her and I discussed yelp a little and how some reviews of art and science described it as a little snobby...we laughed about that, I definitely did not have that experience. After my color, I got a haircut with Nicole who also kicks major ass!! She came over and talked to me before my color to see my hair dry and discuss what I wanted, which was really nice. She did a great job, and took her time and also took into account all my requests! I would highly recommend art and science for both cut and color. I plan to stick with Nicole and Stephanie, but I think most of the stylists there are great, I saw a lot of other great cuts when i was there. read more

The salon interior is very nice and stylish. The overall vibe feels great. Unfortunately, can't say the same about the quality of the job that was done. Meredith were cutting my hair and it was pretty bad experience. I had to point myself to the uneven parts and ask her to fix it. She showed no creativity at all, it felt like she just followed some plain instructions. Further than that she kept forgetting what I told her 5 mins ago and I had a feeling that she wanted to get rid of me as soon as possible. It was supposed to be a trendy $45 haircut (I had a $20 Groupon for that), but eventually I ended up with really silly looking hair. This review is for Carolyn! I love love love her! My last lady, Carrie, left to pursue other career aspirations and referred her clients to Carolyn. So, I went in yesterday and am so happy with the color. I have dirty blondish hair and am constantly vacillating between blonde and carmel blond and jennifer aniston blond. She was so meticulous and honestly, I have NEVER seen so many foils in my hair at one time. She uses a "butterfly" technique which is time consuming but helps mix the colors to ensure a natural look when finished. And well, it looks absolutely gorgeous. My hair is a beautiful carmel-ey color and I am so so happy with it. She also took the color down a bit further than just the crown to help blend in some of the dark underneath hair. I've been debating about whether or not to write this review for years..... As much as I would like to introduce others to the awesomeness that is a haircut/styling by Vanessa and hair color by Susan, I don't want to reduce my chance of getting future appointments! I have crazy/wavy/thick/long/colored cave woman hair. I have PTSD from years of too short bang trims, awful layers and too orange hair color. I have cried in salons and have spent hundreds of dollars in one month to undo a color job that turned my hair purple. Vanessa and Susan are my new dynamic duo. These two are the best of the best and have changed my trips to the salon into a relaxing and fun experience instead of a white knuckle roller coaster ride. Both have been open to my hair requests be it color or cuts, but are honest about what will be most flattering and match my lifestyle. If you want to not just like....but LOVE your hair, make an appointment with Vanessa and Susan. Just leave some appointments free for me! (P.S. I only get my hair cute twice a year, and when I do it is typically the same style. BUT this time I went in for a complete change up! I offered a picture "suggestion" to Jessica (for the cut) and Ivan (for the color) and they nailed it! It was even better than the picture because they took my skin tones and face shape into consideration. They knew I was making a big change and were super supportive. They listened to everything I wanted and made it better than I could have imagined! After I left, I realized I had been a little conservative with the cut, and wanted more off the back. Yesterday I had two hair appointments, one at Trio(cut) and one at Art+Science(dye). Although my fellow yelper's were adamant regarding Art+Science, I preferred and will only be going back to Trio. I went to Art+Science to get my hair dyed Fashion Red. AS most people know, Fashion Red means bright fucking red, not orange, not burgundy, but CRAYOLA red. Fashion Red is not what I got. Although she did a great job of matching the roots to the ends, and the color looks great on me, it is not what I was expecting or came there for. The salon was nicely staffed and decorated, but nothing special and almost looked bare. At least four stylists were just sitting around and gossiping. Very few of the customers results looked amazing, like the ones I saw at Trio. The BIGGEST problem I had with Art+Science is that during the coloring I asked if she could straighten my hair afterwords. She declined with a b.s. response that, "we don't have straighteners on Monday.'" WTF? She said they only do a "rough blow dry." If I had to pay for this service I would have thrown a hissy fit. She obviously did her best to blow dry it straight, but she was definitely lacking skills in this department. Please read my review on Trio Salon(just around the corner), I highly recommend them. I will not be coming back to Art+Science, it is overrated and even though the dye job was free, it is not worth it. PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL ME ASKING WHO DYED MY HAIR. My first-ever visit involved a desperate plea to fix a botched ombre job received from an Aveda salon on Halsted/Armitage. Needless to say, A+S worked their magic and made me myself again, but better. Shout out to some city's greatest stylists (Paul, Rob), and colorists (Ivan, Susan). I schedule my appointments weeks ahead, and it's always great to receive an email reminder a few days before. They also do free bang trims, and have a product punchcard. After having numerous scheduling problems due to the lack of cerebral capacity that answers the phone, I complained to the manager when she scheduled me with a stylist who was out of my price range. Perhaps to a cute 17-year-old Ohio-bred wanna be punk-ass Chicago hipster, "Junior stylist" means "I'd like to pay as much as possible to have my short hair trimmed." Perhaps I should have consulted a Wicker Park dictionary before scheduling. Anyway, my hair was also colored there, and it looked simply amazing. I asked if the color would wash out. "No, no...." I cannot understand how this salon is rated so well. My roots are just beginning to show now, and I have to find a salon and stylist to fix the mess that was made of my hair at Art & Science. I went in to have my roots done (highlighted hair) and the stylist suggested an all over touch up. My hair came out orange at the roots and that brassy doll yellow everywhere else, not to mention, being frizzy. This is the worst hair color experience I've ever had and I've literally not gone out because I am so embarrassed about how I look. Looking around the shop, I should have known to beware of having my color done there because none of the stylists had particularly good color; more like at-home dye jobs. Did I miss something? Like I said, I asked for a trim, and came out with 3" pieces all around my head. I can't even style this "new" do. I'm appalled that I was charged $80 for a style I never asked for. If your a total hipster and want the same style everyone else has - go here. If you love your long hair. No way.
