Art + Science is laid-back and cool. Micheal does a GREAT job listening to what you want, making suggestions based on your hair and trends, and then executing on what you decide together. She asks questions as she cuts, so there's never a "OMG that is too short" moment. Also, I think the cuts are very reasonably priced....I recently paid $55 for my cut. Bang trims are FREE. Gil was the best. Did a fabulous textured long layer look on my long hair and styled to perfection. Too bad I'll never have the talent to replicate his masterpiece at home. Art + Science is a great spot. It's very conveniently located. It's right off the blue line in a part of town that has a lot of good food options for before or after you get your cut. The atmosphere inside is welcoming for both men and women, friendly, and upbeat. I can only speak for one of the stylists, though. Once you find a good one, you should stick with them. I believe she's the very best. Her name is Kimberly Kroll. Aside from being friendly, attentive, and completely beautiful, she's also extremely creative and highly skilled. She'll work with you over a period of time to develop out a strategy that she creates just for you to ensure that you look your very best. I know that there are other talented stylists at Art + Science, but Kimberly is the only one that I have any experience with and I think she's tremendous. read more

I had a terrible experience with color service at this salon. I had lightened my hair with a lightening spray for years and it looked terrific and natural till about the five year mark when it started to lose depth and range of hues. My natural color has been darkening as I've aged but I was a strawberry blonde through my 20s with a bright golden tone. I had done blonde highlights ten years ago, which I hated because they were cool and platinum, totally the wrong hue for my coloring. I shared that with colorist Susan Hurley and explained that I wanted to go back to my original shade, while keeping the gold tones and possibly adding reds. She countered that in her experience going too dark after being blonde is too harsh of a transition for many women. I started to interrupt to say I didn't have a problem with that and she cut me off with "let me finish." She mapped out a plan where she would do highlights and lowlights to return some of the color variation and I'd be able to gradually go darker. I said I was ok with that, but I definitely didn't want a harsh root line to grow out and I wanted to keep the gold. She agreed. The next week at the end of the appointment I had ash blonde hair with platinum highlights. The shade of blonde she used was dirty and grey, the color most women come to a salon to get rid of. The blonde was even lighter than what I walked in with, and the technique she used of grouping tiny amounts of hair meant the overall color was muddy and slightly green. My mom, who is always the first to argue that I look great, no matter what my own critique, took one look at my hair and said it looked like it did when I was a kid and swam so much in the pool my hair turned green. Meanwhile, Susan was delighted, telling me this was a successful coloring because I was now "neutral" and we had all sorts of options as to what to do next. Never mind that neutralizing my tone and cooling it was never what I wanted and had explicitly said I had hated about my past coloring experience. I was so shocked and upset I just agreed that I liked it and left the salon as quickly as possible. The same day (Saturday) I reached out through the web site to see what could be done. The person manning the chat function was completely unhelpful, essentially, that's not my department, and directed me to the salon. I figured Susan would be busy with clients so I sent a polite but unhappy email asking specifically what could be done and what the policy would be on charging to fix it. Susan called back late on Monday and left a terse voicemail saying she understood I wasn't happy and she wanted me to be happy so call her back. She didn't address any of my questions or acknowledge any responsibility for the miscommunication. I felt like I was going to wind up in a stressful negotiation with her, still without understanding what the salon would be willing to do for me, and speaking with someone who clearly didn't think she had any role in how things had gone wrong. I sent her an email saying I felt so mistrustful after this disaster that I needed to seek help somewhere else. She never replied. Never apologized. Never offered even a partial refund. I've had my hair color corrected since then, a great ginger brown that I love and is essentially what I asked for in the beginning. Because of the massive amount of highlighting Susan did, I'm still stuck with a root line growing out where the color absorbs differently. It will be more than a year before that all grows out. I've also spent hundreds more than I should have to get my hair to a reasonable look that goes with my skin tone. I'm disappointed that such a highly recommended salon didn't listen to my desires, screwed up my hair as a result and never even explained their policy to me, let alone made much of an effort to make me feel comfortable. TLDR/ steer clear of this place for color work unless you have a ton of past coloring service experience and are willing to aggressively defend what you want so you don't get the colorists idea of what's popular. read more

I decided to break up with my current hair stylist when I moved to Ukrainian Village. I didn't feel that the trek to Lincoln Park was merited based on the mediocre haircuts I'd been receiving. I purchased a groupon for this place which included a conditioning treatment, haircut and style not knowing who would style my hair or how it would work. Can I say I couldn't be happier. I Love my haircut Im so happy I have no choice but to return and I am a picky person when it comes to my hair. A stylist (Becca, I recommend her highly) sat me down talked about what I did and didn't like about my hair. She cut a lot off but we both agreed it would be better for what I wanted and Ive had versions of this haircut many of times, I think she was the first to pinpoint what it was I needed to make me happiest. The cut is perfect. Thank you Becca. On a side note not reflective to the business but to stress my happiness with the stylist. I have tried a few other highly recommended places within the city with no luck Then settling to only get my hair cut once a year when returning to my home town, having my best friend (also a stylist) cut it. First impressions are always important, starting with making the call to schedule an appointment. The receptionists there are super genuine and probably the nicest hair salon receptionists I've ever dealt with. I have long bohemian, part in the middle hair, but wanted to coordinate this with bangs. I got my haircut by Rob Reyes who totally knew and felt out the look I wanted and it looks awesome. Rob not only takes the time to get to know his clients, however, he is genuinely helpful on how to style your new look, since we all know that it will never look as good when we do it ourselves (lez be honest). Also worth noting - I've never had anyone push products on me (not that they had to--I love everything they've used!). At my last haircut in Boston someone kept pushing this product that, while it smelled good, left my hair a dirty, greasy mess on day 2 (I usually only wash my hair twice a week). I recently started going back to Art & Science since my previous hairstylist had scheduling conflicts. I've been getting cuts by Mitra and Cole has been doing my color (natural brown with red streaks). They do a wonderful job and are very hospitable while you are getting your hair done! My hair is very fine so I am appreciative of the way they work with it! For instance, even though I haven't been in for some time, Mitra identified the fact I really just needed a light trim but a conditioning treatment as well. My hair turned out so nice, I ended up purchasing the conditioning mask (Shu Uemura) even though it's pricey! At least with my fine hair, a cut & color seems to work well, but the home/professional conditioning products I've been using (Aveda, Bumble & Bumble, various Walgreens brands) have not been working for me. I am active and spend time outdoors year around which seems to affect my hair. I dig the decor and location of the salon, I went there in the late 2000s but switched it up due to budget. read more

I love Tara at Art and Science! She and the salon are both great. I just recently moved to Chicago and was very sad leaving my stylist of 10 years back in St. Louis, but Tara stood up to my expectations. Ive gone to her a few times and whether you tell her to do whatever she wants, or you give her a picture or a few ideas, she will blow you away. I always leave with an awesome cut. Unlike most stylists, she doesnt push product on you, but she does give you some really good suggestions of stuff that actually works! Tara is worth every penny!! I had my hair colored by Kacie at A&E. AMAZING! She took my dirty-blond hair into a totally great , new hair dimension. It is now a beautiful blond color! She colored over my old highlights and totally eliminated the old, dark blond growth. My hair is now Super Shiny and Soft. I love it! Although, Kacie is a student (for a bit, yet), I highly recommend her. She offered some great color ideas and discussed them with me before the coloring. I'm new to chicago, so I was unfamiliar with the good salons around my neighborhood. After reading reviews of this place, I thought it sounded like a good fit for my style. Wrong. The front desk people were awesome...and actually my hair stylist was really really nice....she just didn't know how to cut my hair. I have pretty standard...good hair. It's long and thick enough..already has layers in it...and I feel i gave a pretty good description of exactly what I was going for. I even brought a picture! She left my hair heavy. if not left to dry naturally in a very particular way...it looks one length...i asked for lots of layers. She could NOT cut a swoop bang claiming it was MY hair....I wonder why my other stylist cut my bangs amazingly? She took forever on my hair....blow drying it and trying to get a natural curl...my hair is naturally a bit wavey already. My bangs ended up blunt like and not a nice curve. I'm not sure if I would go back....I would definitely request another stylist. No offense to her personality...like i said, really nice girl....not a good stylist. UPDATE* Cindy the manager was so kind to me and offered to reschedule a haircut. You can tell a good business by their genuine concern for their clients. I'm excited to give them a second try and will let you know how it turns out! UPDATE 2* Jessica saved my hair! She was awesome!! She knew exactly how to execute my overall ideas of how i wanted my hair...very communicative and extremely nice. I finally found a place and stylist I know I can go to and have my bangs cut exactly the way I want them. This is a huge relief for me! So you know, my first experience was just an off one...but note: always say something right away if you feel that you aren't satisfied. I've been getting my haircut pretty regularly at Art + Science for a while now and it's truly a stellar place. I've had my haircut by a few different people here over the past couple of years and every single one of them is incredibly talented at their craft. They really pay attention to the details and are thoughtful about not just how my hair is going to look at the end of the cut, but how it will look in a week, two weeks, etc. It's a truly impressive staff, and it's the first place I've ever been 100% comfortable with telling the stylist to just do whatever they think will look best. Everyone on the staff has good judgement when determining how short I should take the sides, how I high I should take the fade, etc. And they're second to none at executing every style to perfection. read more

I've been lucky to be around and get to know good hairdressers in my life. I'm not snobby... I like a barber and a punk rocker too. But I know from professional. And conscientious. This is simply the best of all worlds with an emphasis on professionalism and intuition. Paul is an amazing owner. So approachable and just nice. I went to Art + Science for the first time a couple weeks ago with my roommates. They had both had their hair cut there a few weeks earlier, and were just going back to get free trims. I have to say, they both looked amazing! My roommate, Brad, especially looked great. It just goes to show how much a great haircut can do for a guy, particularly when most guys seem not to care if they just get an average trim from whatever barbershop is within walking distance. I think both my roommates had their hair cut by Katie. In any case, we went a couple weeks ago for them to get free trims, and I spontaneously decided it was time to do something about my boring, long, straight hair, so I made an appointment for two hours later with Jessica. She was great! We had an awesome conversation, and my hair has never looked this chic! I'm a slacker when it comes to my hair -- getting it cut about 2-3 times a year and rarely doing anything with color. I just don't like the upkeep. I came here to get help and that's exactly what Vanessa did for me. I am not a hairstylist, so I HATE when I go to a salon and they want to know exactly what I want and don't give me any advice. I saw Sofia for my color and Seven for my cut. I have been to multiple salons in the city over the past 9 years, and I must say this was my best experience yet. After moving from Old Town to Wicker Park, I tried four or five different salons in the neighborhood with lackluster results before FINALLY finding my go-to place at Art + Science. Tara (cuts) and Shana (color) are amazing -- they're both talented, personable, and really listen to what you want while also providing helpful suggestions. I have thick, naturally wavy hair, and it's hard to find someone who knows how to give you a cut that's flattering whether you wear it straight or curly. Tara gets it, and I no longer trust anyone else with my hair. (I also love that she thins it out just enough to lighten it up without taking away the body.) You can stop in for a free bang trim anytime, which I have taken her up on. In the past, I've gone to colorists who add more and more blond highlights every time until eventually my hair is so far away from its natural color that it looks horrible if I'm a little late making my next appointment. Shana listened when I said I wanted something subtle, and the color always looks natural and grows out really nicely. She's also been nice enough to give me just a quick touch-up on my roots when I haven't needed full highlights. My most recent experience was not a positive one and ended with my hair extremely damaged from bleach and not the style that was discussed. Rob is amazing!! He made my hair beautiful again! I have semi-fine, wavy curly hair... I had previously been to a salon specializing in Deva Curl cuts. My advice, don't fall for that gimmick. Go to someone who truly knows how to cut hair. He listened & made my vision come to life...but I'm also pretty flexible and reasonable with what my hair needs in order to achieve a certain look (i.e. cutting off some inches of damage). GUY is my guy for sure! Guy first gave me movie-star blow-outs, as I call them, for my curly (and layered) hair when I would go to the Evanston salon. I have been going to Gil for years, and LOVE him! I have super curly hair and before Gil I would straighten it almost every day. However, for the last 5 years I can happily say that I hardly ever use a straightner! Gil understands curly hair better than anyone I have ever met before!
