Very nice breakfast at Armstrong's. They were extremely busy, but we found a table and waited. The waitress was very friendly, professional and attentive. It was a good country breakfast. The sausage was particularly good. We thought it might be locally made. Coffee was a little warm, but some like it that way. I prefer hot coffee. Eggs were a little soft for me. Otherwise, good meal. One thing we thought was odd, we did not get the total bill until we left the table, which meant we couldn't determine tip at table. The bill did not have cost of everything on we had. Like C meant coffee. And T meant tea. We didn't know that and didn't remember cost. Also, no one mentioned it's a cash only business. We found out while sitting at the table and looking at "Yelp". I thought C on the receipt was for "Cash only ". As we were leaving, a lady told us we were " freaking adorable "! We were dressed alike.

Hours and payment options. Yelp is not clear that they DO NOT accept any payment but cash.

Quick little place that's been around for a long time. Waitresses are cordial and stay busy. Food is what you would expect from a country cook. Good value for the portions. Can get a little crowded right at lunch time, but not terrible.

    Also to much dang sauce

The inside reminds me of a Chili's or Ruby Tuesday, but a bit darker. I think it's a nice atmosphere, appropriate for date night, a group, a family, etc. Our server (who has worked here for 3 years) was friendly and efficient. To start, we ordered a bowl of yesterday's soup special (She crab) and a small order of boiled shrimp. The soup was excellent, creamy, and with small pieces of crab throughout. The shrimp (six in the small order) were prepared well and came with a tangy cocktail sauce. The server brought over a loaf of their complimentary bread, which is actually three breads together in a single loaf. The bread was good (I preferred the dark loaf part) and came with a peach butter. We were told that the butters change periodically. The butter had pieces of peach in it (!) and we enjoyed the novelty. Our server mentioned that they also have a pistachio butter and maple butter. Yum. I ordered a salad with the balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side. The salad itself was good - fresh, with crisp lettuce, tomato, cucumber, apple, almond pieces, etc. Then there was the dressing. Although I mixed the salad dressing in the cup before tasting it, when I did taste it, it was almost all oil with no discernible vinegar or other flavor. I kept stirring and tasting and nothing. So I abandoned the dressing. For entrees, my partner ordered the charbroiled salmon in herb butter with a side of broccoli. The salmon was prepared well and very tasty. I ordered the mahi-mahi, with the sun-dried tomato butter sauce on the side. The mahi-mahi was well prepared and tasty on its own. Honestly, I tasted the sun-dried tomato butter sauce and it was essentially whipped butter. I didn't think it added anything to the entree so I didn't use it. The potato came with butter and sour cream on the side. The potato was very good. Although we were full and not planning on dessert, the server came over with small cups of peppermint ice cream, calling it a "palate cleanser." It was very good and a nice touch. Other than the salad dressing and the sauce for the fish, it was an excellent meal in a nice atmosphere with good service. When we were leaving at around 7:00 pm, the line was out the door.

Grt them if you like ribs. My only regret and it was my own taste buds the bbq sauce needed some heat. My wife had chicken with artichoke hearts and sauce. She said it was tasty and the sauce sublime. Overall, a must dine at historic restaurant in Staunton.

But a customer inside kindly came out and said they were leaving, offering us their inside table. (There's also the beer garden outside in the back for seating, which looks like it would be nice and comfortable.) I got an everything bagel with hummus and tomato. My partner got everything bagel, scallion cream cheese, tomato ($0.85 for tomato) and lox ($6 for the lox). Although everything tasted good, we both noticed that the bagels were really, really dense, tough and chewy. Like uncomfortably tough and chewy. My partner left one half of their bagel uneaten and I didn't finish mine. It looked great and the hummus and cream cheese and other toppings were fine, but the bagel was really, really tough. I'd like to believe that it isn't because the bagels were stale, but the thought crossed my mind. The coffee I had (dark brew) was outstanding, served in a nice, large mug. Excellent! Service was efficient. I considered a four-star review because the coffee was outstanding, but the bagels were really disappointing. It's too bad. It looks like a cool place, but their main food item appears to be bagels. Maybe it was a one-off, but I spent over $26 for two bagels and one coffee, and I don't plan to come back to find out.

I got a cinnamon roll bigger than my hand to go when we checked out after breakfast. We were promptly greeted upon entry and sat in a booth. My husband covered cream chipped beef because that's not something we usually see on menus near us. I got biscuits and sausage gravy. The portions were HUGE. We could have done with a half serving of that was an option or shared. My husband thought his chipped beef was a little floury but my gravy was good. I did have to add some salt and pepper to my eggs which I guess I can understand that maybe people don't want them pre salted in case they are on a restricted diet. Pricing was reasonable for the portion size. $35 for 2 people with my to go pastry before tip. The restaurant has a bit of an old timer feel. It's been in business since 1947 which is pretty cool. They also have signs about closed areas for groups and they accept buses. If I'm in the area again, I think I'll try an eclair. My cinnamon roll was super moist which I was honestly pleasantly surprised by since it was a to go pastry. They also have a fridge with glass door that showed other to go options like the chopped beef and cinnamon apples.

Lousy house blend coffee and mediocre food. If you are staying at this hotel, I would not recommend buying a breakfast voucher that is offered you at the time of online pre-registration and check in ($35 for two people, includes tax but excludes tips). Either eat outside ( plenty of choices nearby) or go a la cart. We went for a combo breakfast. Bacon was meaty and not crisp and quite salty, eggs were good. Croissants were not part of the voucher and you have to pay extra if you order, same goes for cappuccino or latte ( with a voucher you get only a house blend) . I don't think we will be coming back .
