I went to Armando's the other night with my mother and sister, as she had just flown into town from half way across the country and was in need of something to eat that was not simple meat and potatoes.
We had already done a drive down Colonial, and while the idea of Vietnamese food wasn't a bad one, there was still some hesitation on their part, so instead I took a turn down 17/92 and headed towards Winter Park. Driving around there a little bit, we finally turned down New England Dr and saw the variety of places to eat along this section, at which point my sister directed us to find a parking spot and that one of the restaurants along there would be the place that we ate that night. That ended up being Armando's... and it was a good choice.
We decided to eat outside, which suited us quite well as the evening wasn't that hot (it had rained earlier in the day, cooling things down a bit) and it was relatively quiet. We did go inside to use the bathrooms, that sort of thing, and found the interior to be quite noisy.
Happy hour was happening, so beers and cocktails were ordered along with water, and we decided on a appetize of the mussels. Along with this Armando's also brings out a bread basket with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The vinegar seemed to be sunk under a small lake of olive oil, so I passed on it and ate the bread straight, which was very nice. While waiting for the mussels to arrive, we also ordered our main courses. I ordered the spaghetti carbonara, my sister ordered the gnocci, and my mother got the chicken marsala. I asked if they could do the carbonara using linguini, but unfortunately their next wider noodle turns out to be pappardelle, which is simply too wide a noodle for a carbonara... I feel the maximum width of a noodle for carbonara should be somewhere around tagliatelle or fettuccine. Spaghetti would have to do.
Our mussels came out, and they were good. The broth they were served in was a bit heavy in butter, but that was alright. We made due, and the bread that had been served earlier worked very well with this broth, too. We found only one dud mussel in the batch, which isn't bad (by dud, I mean we simply could not get it open... it was solidly closed up).
Soon after this, pretty much perfectly on time, our mains came out. I really enjoyed my carbonara, though it was a lot drier than I have experienced in the past. The use of actual pancetta was a very nice touch, but I think it could have used a bit more cream to make it more of a sauce. Mind you, it was still very good, just not quite what I was expecting in consistency. Frankly, I wouldn't necessarily change the recipe... it was just different, and the taste was excellent.
I did try my sister's gnocci and my mother's marsala, and both were also very nice. No complaints from either of them about the food!
We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Armando's, and we are very likely to return sometime in the future as it is tough to find a truly good Italian restaurant. read more
