For $14 per person, I was expecting much more. This would have been an okay experience if it were free, but overall it felt very underwhelming. The vendors were selling items at very high price points that didn't feel particularly special or unique. No disrespect to the vendors. The products themselves were nice, but many pieces priced at $500+ didn't seem justified. I was mostly disappointed because it was advertised as a Christmas bazaar. I was expecting festive, vibrant, and cozy holiday décor that truly made you feel the Christmas spirit. My husband and attended this Bazaar at the Palmer Center and we were really looking forward it. We won't be returning and here's why: Pros: A good number of vendors to enjoy. Decorated nicely for Christmas with Christmas music playing Everyone was very friendly and the vendors weren't being pushy with their products. We could leave our car in the garage and walk down the street to have lunch at Terry Black's. After lunch we walked around some more. Cons: It was very female oriented. I saw a lot of men walking around holding bags for their significant other. I came across only 5 or 6 at most booths geared towards men. The prices for products being sold from vendors was really marked up and in some cases way too expensive for what you'd be buying. The #1 reason why we will never go back. Cost! We started by parking in their garage and that was only $10.00. We thought that was really reasonable. We entered through the entrance only to find out that they are charging $25.00 per person to enter. Let me get this straight. We were charged a total of $50.00 for the privilege of going inside to buy things. We both immediately regretted our decision to buy the tickets anyway in hopes that what we are about to see would be worth it. No, it's not worth it. Do NOT go. We left so frustrated. 50 bucks to walk around and look at stuff being sold. I hate leaving poor reviews but if I can keep another person from being ripped off I will. read more

What a wonderful surprise! Wasn't sure what to expect at this event, but it was wonderful! The Yelp rating doesn't reflect this event very well since the reviews seem a little dated - 2021 was our first time visiting and we would love to go back next year. The event area was much larger than I thought it would be, wrapping around the center as well as back into the park area (which has a great backdrop of downtown, too). Artists' tents are arranged all over the place and the variety was incredible. From metal art to local art to traditional Japanese painting styles dating back to the year 600 - if you get to speak with the artists and learn about their work, it's so much richer of an experience. Some even go out of their way to teach you without being overbearing in any way. So nice! Live music and a couple drink / snack stands were both very enjoyable. Drink stands had tastings offered throughout the day. We easily spent a couple of hours there and had some nice gifts to takeaway by the time we left. Worth the ticket price because you can make so much out of it. Be aware, most people park in the paid garage right next to the event ($8) but you could also park a little farther for free. Plus it's right by Terry Black's BBQ so you're right in the middle of things for before/after activities. read more

I was luckily enough to score free tickets to this bazaar via yelp. My husband and I went on a Friday afternoon. We arrived when the band was on break and didn't start up again until we were leaving. There are plenty of vendors who are selling art, jewelry, candles, soaps, clothing and more. We both looked around and some of the art pieces were quite pricey. Nothing called our name while here so we left. While we walked around we did grab a drink which made this experience nice as it was busy in some areas. We parked on the street but due to being a disabled vet it was not an issue and free. I know they have parking garage nearby but saw it was a pretty penny. Overall it was nice to attend since it was free for us. I am not sure I would pay to come here in the future read more

I continue to support Armadillo as an Austin tradition since I go with a friend who thinks Armadillo is the greatest thing since sliced bread. But I must agree with my other friend Michelle C that there isn't a whole here that compels me to buy local. It used to be a great place to spend Christmas Eve shopping and listening to live music, and that was the main draw. Then the pandemic struck and it was cancelled for 2020. This year, it was rebranded as the "Armadillo Outdoor Bazaar" and held outdoors on the terrace and driveway for only one extended weekend of Friday-Sunday. Very different vibe. Fewer vendors and less merch. We went on Saturday. It rained, which was forecast--clearly not their fault. However, in an email exchange, I was told to expect all the booths would be under shelter. They were not. Only about half actually were sheltered. The first music performance of the day was rained out. Weather did clear just in time to hear the wonderful Ruthie Foster perform. That was probably the highlight of the day. My shopping partner gifted me a CD/DVD from Ruthie and she got a new hat band she fancied. I'll be glad to go back when they're able to be safely indoors again, but the compressed schedule combined with the unpredictable weather this year tells me not to come back until then. read more

I've been to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar for years, and this was easily my favorite year. Being outdoors added to the holiday festive feel as we went on a crisp winter day (one of the few rare ones in Austin). The outdoor venue also allowed for more space between the booths, so while there were likely the same amount of people shopping it felt much more spacious. We spent more time perusing the booths as a result, and were able to get a better sense of all that was on offer from the bazaar. Compared to other art shows, I find it interesting that very few vendors had anything below $10, even greeting cards. If I find an artist I like my first step is to start with a sticker or a couple cards, while I consider a larger print or original piece purchase down the line. I found one card for $8, one sticker for $3, and otherwise everything was above $10, which seemed steep, particularly for greeting cards. All told, only 4-5 vendors even had cards available, so you are definitely looking at more pricy commodities at this bazaar than you might find elsewhere. Having been almost every year I was also a little disappointed to find 85-90% of the vendors were the same that I recognized from previous years. I would love to be exposed to new artists in the community. Several vendors were also from out of state, and I would definitely feel more comfortable supporting local artists. I do recognize most of the comments above might be unique to me and my preferences, but hopefully knowing these things will help you make your own informed decision. The star of the show was a live performance by Ruthie Foster, whose beautiful voice carried all throughout the outdoor shopping area. I sat and watched a couple songs and then wandered around some more, and was thrilled that the music still carried without being overwhelming near the stage. Hats off to the coordinators of the musicians. All the other artists performing looked interesting, but definitely glad to get to experience Ruthie Foster live. I will be back as the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar has become tradition in my family. If it were not tradition I would say come for the music, not the shopping. read more

But now that I have returned to Austin some 20 years later, I find this event has become quite a bit more sophisticated. It is well organized and the vendors are of high quality. It might be an "Austin Tradition", but I will probably never attend again. 3-5 years ago, this was an amazing event, but no longer. First and foremost; I thought that their "support" (actually it was forced) of the cashless agenda was just awful. Not only did they force a cashless box office, but they also told vendors that they could not take cash. This is outrageous. While there were some very nice booths there, much of it was WAY overpriced, and there was a lot that wasn't worth the time to look at. Many of the vendors we spoke with were not happy with the event or the attendance and the cost of a booth to the artists is a ridiculous amount of money. The "outside" food vendors were exorbitantly expensive ($6 for a SMALL PIECE of pizza?? and $20 for a very small quesadilla and drink) and to top it off, they were not very nice to the customers. All in all, it was not worth the trip this year and if they keep pushing the cashless agenda, I hope they never hold the event again. read more

New to Austin then you need to checkout this ATX festivus. Yea parking and the entry fee is a tad high as are the beverages but what the heck you gotta check it out, once. I don't attend every year but I do enjoy wandering around, with local beer in hand, checking out all the cool vendors, especially the locals. Side track, there seems to be more and more non locals each year. Some of the stalls are just drive bys but some really draw you in. This year my favorite was the vendor with the acid trip influenced artwork. One piece was a monkey riding a banana like a cowboy bull rider. Enuff said.. The Uncle Lucius was performing when we were there and the band was mostly country rock but they did rock out to Tom Petty and even Mungo Jerry.. in the summertime when the weather is hot... This is a cool family friendly experience and a must if you have never been.. Now where the heck am I going to hang this dang monkey print? read more

Right off the bat it costs $18 just to park and enter ACB. Lots and I mean LOTS of local artists selling their kickass wares. I've been coming to ACB for over 25 years and even remember when it used to be in a warehouse off of 3rd street. Some of the best gifts I bought came from ACB. Food is sold as well as beer, wine and liquor. Of course, you can't go to ACB without hearing local musicians strum their music while you shop. It's a great Austin tradition, so give it a shot and those you gift will love ya forever! read more

It's one of my favorite traditions during the holidays. You can get all your holiday shopping done in one place and sip on an adult beverage at the same time! You will see lots of jewelry, various types of artwork, bath products, toys, clothing and accessories. All are unique. And they have a stage with live bands. I like to go on Sundays, late afternoon. It's usually less crowded. Parking at Palmer is $8 and the entry ticket to the Bazaar is $10. read more

Is it just me? Am I just getting cranky with old age? Not sure, but with each passing year the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar seems a bit less special. I decided to go to the ACB to buy some candles from Lights Out, an Austin company, for Christmas. I've bought them at the Bazaar before; my mom loves them. The Bazaar has been located the past few years at the Palmer Center whereas it used to be at the dark and funky - and entirely more fun - Austin Music Hall before. So the first disappointment is having to pay $7 to park in the garage (you might be lucky and find some of the few "free" parking spots left in Austin near the Dougherty Arts Center). Followed by either a $5 (before 7pm) or $8 (after 7pm) "cover" charge *before* you get to shell out your hard-earned Great Recession $$ for any gifts. OK, I'm fine paying up to $15 to check out something that is well-organized, cool, crafty and with some good live music. However, my visit this month was disappointing. The music was good but I noticed that many of the vendors weren't even from Austin (let alone Texas) and that some of the 'crafts' were Asian factory-made crap. I can see such tchotchkes for FREE at the monthly craptastic 'market days' in Gruene or elsewhere. There are still a good number of Austin businesses offering good, locally-made stuff for gifts but more and more vendors are art galleries selling paintings, sculpture, etc - I saw a $6K banana sculpture this year (!) - and others selling stuff found just about anywhere. Anyway, I found the candles I was looking for and listened to a band before leaving the ACB. I left wondering if yet another Austin 'brand' has sold out to mediocrity. Perhaps a renewed commitment to local artists and a finding a venue without a charge for parking would make this a much better event. read more

The Dillo Bazaar is an Austin tradition and I for one am glad it's still rolling after all these years. I have been around long enough to remember when it used to be in the Dillo and now with it's new digs in the convention center....some things have changed. However, the people have not. Suz and I go every year and always purchase many of our Christmas gifts here. There are many vendors who offer gifts for under $25. There are also your high end art and goodies. Some great memories include...always saying hi to the original Carmen Banana from the old Austin Access tv days...some of you older folks might remember this character. We then head over to David Busch and pick up our annual tree ornament, followed by Fred Tate and look at his newest jewelery creations. I hate to date myself, but I have a couple of his bolo's... remember those things..they go great with my parachute pants. We pass the bar and pick up a drink...okay we do that several times. Today we find an excellent framed print from Jay Long and a wonderful sculpture from Brad and Sundie Ruppert of Vintage Sculpture.... we buy both. We find a new artist, Major Mosaics and Suz finds two beautiful hand made tiles for her sisters... at $45 a piece, it's a real find for a one of a kind tile. Her sisters will love what she found. There are home made toys and clothes..and it's fun for me to see Art Schoenig who hasn't seemed to age a bit in all these years. We have several of his lizards and metal flowers around our home. Oh and what is that I hear...why it's live music from who.. Terri Hendricks and Lloyd Maines....yes, that's friggin Lloyd Maines an icon for a $6 entry fee.. I CRAP YOU NEGATIVE! Oh you could hang all day or leave and come back later in the evening to check out another band.. happens to be Van Wilks tonight. Now that doesn't suck. Although the convention center is as modern and crisp as you can get and it's a long throw from the original Dillo..it works, It's Fabulous and It's what began the weirdness in Austin. It brings back so many wonderful memories from the old days... read more

I've been going to the Christmas Bazaar for going on 4 years now.. every year is just as awesome as before. I love the live bands.. I love being able to get drinks while I do my shopping. Anytime I have to do X-mas shopping is a bad day for me. Not so much if I am going to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. Here I saunter in get a beer and wonder around. Sure the prices are a bit higher than your typical street vendor shops, but most of the goods are still hand made and worth every cent. Go here , spend a little extra money, get something hand made and get your buzz on and Christmas shopping doesn't seem so bad! read more

The fact that this event has a "cover" or "entrance" charge kind of blew me away.(in a bad way) The only good thing about it was the fact that it was indoors on a cold day. The building that it was held in was a nice one but to pay a little under $10 per person to get in was a bit much in my opinion. The vendors were really great to look at and explore. They had really interesting items and a lot of their craftsmanship was quite amazing but like I said, the entrance fee just was not worth it in my opinion. I hadn't been to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar since I was very little, but I remember having a great experience (for example, that was the first time I ever saw a beat poet, which my dad discreetly pointed out). Now that I'm older and able to better appreciate such a place, I had a great time! Parking and entrance, both 7 bucks, was a bit much, and the food and drink was also as overpriced as to be expected. But if you don't drink much, then it's all good, isn't it? There were dozens of stalls, all tastefully done. I love arts and crafts bazaars like tis because even if you don't buy anything, it's so cool just to walk around and see all there is to see, and meet all the interesting people. One artist that sticks out in my mind is this one older guy who made casts of people's faces, or, people's whatever. He wore a bright suit with a tie with naked ladies on it, and a cast of a nipple on his lapel. Another joyous kind (who reminded me of Bob Hoskins' Schmee from "Hook") made beautiful copper mechanical toys, like alligators whose tails swished and whose jaws snapped when you rolled them. Of course there were also all kinds of awesome paintings, sculptures, leather goods, clothes, jewelry, gourmet food and candy, etc. etc. etc. There was live music, and the general ambiance of the place was very nice. Now, it goes without saying that all these crafts are expensive. But, you are supporting local artists, and people who really put their passions into their works of art, so it's a pretty fair trade-off. There were so many things I wanted badly, but couldn't simply because I didn't have the money. I eventually settled on a few things for Xmas gifts, such as a hand-tooled leather-bound sketchbook, a copper "odd thing" and a music CD. In turn received a number of things, such as a nice hand-stitched sheepskin hat, a blue-and-black poster of Kurt Vonnegut, and an oddly adorable little zebra-striped kitten doll (I know I know, I'm too old for dolls, but I just had to have this one). Remember when I said you meet interesting people? My sister and friend and I went outside to smoke and vape, and ended up talking to this one very drunk woman. In the first 5 minutes of making her acquaintance, we learned that not only did she have one of the oldest trees in the county in her backyard, but she also liked to lie naked in her jacuzzi and smoke weed. She showed us the big C's on the seat of her jeans, and when I asked if she was a Cincinnati fan, she took off her jacket and challenged me to a fight, saying she was a Chicago Cubs 'till the day she died. Then she hugged and kissed us all and went back inside. So yeah. When it rolls around at the end of this year, I definitely recommend stopping by. It'll be a fun experience! read more

The Bazaar has kicked it up a notch or so toward the less-rustic since I was last there; there were fewer Texas-belt-buckle affairs in the stalls and I didn't spy any cow-skull art. If you've never been, it might be worth a stroll. There were several new crafty artisans and painters I had not seen there before. (My personal fave is always Crave Artisan Chocolate, who make fancy good chocolates, including gluten free and vegan options. Free samples! :). They do have live music every day at specific times, which is well curated (a fancy stage with decent audio) and some food and beverage if you are so inclined (list on the Armadillo web site). http://www.armadillobazaar.com/ Note: Admission is now $7 at any time, so no discount for going at an off-peak hour. I advise going at a weird time anyway, and parking on Barton Springs, then walking around from the back of Palmer so you don't also have to spend (an additional) $7 to park in the Palmer Event Center parking garage. You can only enter the Palmer Event Center for the bazaar in the front of Palmer. However, if you like funkier art, in general, I'd go to Blue Genie, which I have now been to several times, who have no admission fee and quite a full bar if you like partaking while you shop. read more

I'm really surprised that the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar has only 3 stars on Yelp - I had a great time today browsing a ton of fantastic artists. My friend and I have been cruising the big craft shows this year - Renegade, Blue Genie and this one, along with a few other smaller craft fairs and this one by far exceeded our expectations. Sure, it was $7 to park and $7 per person to enter which I actually thought was sort of steep, but when we went in and started walking around we realized that the money was worth the sheer enchantment. They had a bar, several food vendors and a big stage with great music going on in the center. All of the booths were really well done and there were so many amazing things to look at, I must have collected over 50 business cards. They turned the lights down low which really accentuated the booths with spot-lighting and there was plenty of room for browsing - crowding wasn't an issue as with many other events we've been to this year. I will agree with other reviewers that there are more upscale, pricier items here than many of the other craft shows offer - there's a lot more high end art but it is all so great to see, such uniqueness. I really had to restrain myself from buying a lot of stuff as I already have most of my shopping done. We saw a lot of very Austin artists, and a lot of cool artists from other places. Interestingly enough, there were only a few repeats from other shows we had been to - which was a really refreshing surprise considering we thought for sure there would be a lot of repeats. If you're looking for a great way to spend an afternoon, or for a unique item - or that big ticket, wow-factor item for someone who's hard to shop for...this is definitely a great place to find that. Same old, same old, same old! Vendors are all the same every year with the same mech. Expensive to get in, park and drink. The art work ranged from amateurish to art costing thousands (some worth it some not) What happened to keep Austin weird,? Many of these artists are not even from here. This "elite" show should be restricted to local artists only and let's have some diversity, mix it up! I used to look forward to this. I don't think I will go next year. On the brighter side the music is always great especially when it's Dale Watson even if he is singing Christmas Carols. read more

Another Austin yearly event. Dec. 9th - 24th 11AM until 11PM each day Every year I go, and most years, I find just one thing I just had to give someone. Seems each year, another booth or two gets taken up by someone that imports instead of makes their own stuff, to me that's a shame. Wish it was required that items be crafted by the artist renting the booth in order to have a stall at this Austin tradition. There are still enough of those to keep me coming back each year, just to see what changes some of the artists made over the year. Potters, painters wood carvers and misc. others. They have - Full bar to get liquiored up, live music to shop by, standard craft fair over priced eats to keep your stength up while shopping, and a truely eclectic crowd of people in and out of the stalls to keep you entertained. For the price of admission - all in all not a bad show. Week Day admission before 7:00 P.M. $3.00 After 7:00 P.M. and weekends $ 5.00 Another "Keep Austin Wierd Event" ya'll come hear! read more

If you favor the most obscure of the most underground, like me, then you might not find what you're looking for at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. I've been there twice, and there are pretty much all the same things you'd find at the Pecan Street Festival, the Congress Avenue Bat Festival - really, any of the many festivals that happen around Austin. So, why pay a cover? Also, while I support the local art scene, I feel that the booths get repetitive after a while, and a lot of ends up being chintzy, overpriced, or too "Renaissance Fair" anyway. I've lived in Austin 23 years. In '83 it was pretty sleepy, lots of tie-dye and birks, rents so low and underutilized you could get a VCR for signing a 6-month lease. We all know what happened the last decade or so. I went to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar and suddenly i found the Austinites i've been missing for so long, the ones crowded out of hyde park and the other university neighborhoods by the Crushing Influx of Wealth. I am disappointed that it seems more of the vendors aren't local like they used to be, but there was some lovely stuff (also some stuff that struck me as waaaay overpriced). We spent more time than we'd originally intended, but it was an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. And most of my gifts from companion ended up coming from there, which was fine with me! read more
