I usually love the greasy spoon types of diners. The breakfasts are usually big portions of potatoes and stacks of pancakes. And here is no exception. However, I made the huge mistake of ordering fish 'n' chips since it was lunchtime. It was disgusting, there was something very fowl about the fish that even the layer of fried goodness around it couldn't mask. The coffee was also terrible and it was harder than it should be to get a refill. I wouldn't mind trying the pancakes & eggs but my experience with the fish makes me not want to take the risk. Plus, I already have a good breakfast spot in town. Give it a shot for breakfast, but avoid the fish 'n' chips at all costs. read more

We were headed for Seattle from Vancouver and had to make a stop for some breakfast in Bellingham. We stopped in to ARLIS'S Restaurant at 1525 Cornwall Avenue and we were stoked with our choice. First of all the food was delicious. I had the taco omelette and I wouldn't share any of it with the others. I don't even know what they had because we were all busy eating every bite. But that's not all. The wait staff was the Best!! The coffee just kept coming and we didn't have to ask for anything or find our server. After reading a bunch of really good reviews about Arlis's I talked my husband into going for breakfast. I ordered the biscuits and gravy with scrambled eggs. My husband had a potato dish. My food was Luke warm , at best, and my eggs had too much salt in them. The gravy had a funky greasy flavor to it. The biscuits were totally cold. I was utterly disappointed with my meal. Not to mention that there were a total of 8 customers in the place including us. How do you screw up on the temperature of a customers dish?!? I tried my husbands potatoes. They were HOT. You have many food options in this general vicinity but you can never go wrong with choosing Arlis's! Love the potato breakfast dishes - have tried them all and they are all awesome. Very large portions and very tasty. Have also been here for lunch and tried a few sandwiches - the turkey club is a standout - large, stacked nicely and delicious. Can get crowded on the weekend but the food is worth the wait. The service is always great too...servers keep your sodas topped off and your coffee mugs filled and that's a huge plus if you ask me. read more

Then again, I was also starving. My mom had the pancakes with bacon which she said were too floury and the bacon too salty (I tried it). I have visited Arlis's on many occasions and every time before this have had a favorable opinion. Today I got the eggs benedict and it was awful and the service I got in response to my dissatisfaction was sub-standard. The hollandaise sauce was this murky yellow color and had a thick floury texture. It had no flavor. I barely tried the sauce and knew I did not want to eat any of it. I told the waitress and she seemed so surprised I was unsatisfied. She asked me if I had had eggs benedict before (I have had it there before and it did not taste like this) and said that nobody had ever complained before. She acted like it was so beyond belief that I didn't like it and I felt pretty insulted by her response. This happened a little bit ago and honestly I won't be back - there enough passable to excellent breakfast places to fill the void. read more

Just ate a wonderful Sunday morning breakfast. We got there at about 8:30, and there were plenty of seats. But it filled up fast! I got the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and husband got the corned beef hash. Both came with potatoes and we both selected the biscuit as our carb side. Yum all around. Smoked salmon had a great blend of sweet and smoky and they accommodated my no onion request although the eggs were a bit on the dry side for my liking (and spouses poached eggs were a bit over cooked). Potatoes were a perfect blend of crispy strings with red-skinned soft potatoes. Biscuits were huge, a bit doughy, but they were served with frozen jam and accommodated my request for honey. Tea is standard Lipton, but at least they serve it in a tea pot (I'm a tea snob), coffee according to husband was "fine, nothing special" The waitstaff were friendly and helpful. All in all a great diner breakfast experience. Will definitely be back. read more

Great breakfast place and friendly servers. They were also the only place practically open on New Year's Day and they benefitted from the breakfast traffic - place was packed. While we had to wait 15 min for our table and another 15 min for our food, it was worth it. Food was great and ample portions. Had the pecan waffles - delicious. Our teenager kids enjoyed their Super Potatoes and Taco Potatoes. We will be back for sure when we are back in town. read more

I don't know if we came here on a bad day or what, but it was not good. My mother and I ordered omelets, my father ordered chicken fried steak, and my sister had the vegetarian eggs Benedict. First off, it took forever to get our food! When we finally got it we were disappointed. The eggs on my sisters Benedict were undercooked. The potatoes tasted frozen and were cold. My dad said the steak he had was very tough and chewy. The omelettes were rubbery and greasy. After we finished, it took a very long time to get the check. The waitress we had was nice at least. I got an Omelet. Not only were the eggs overcooked, but the veg inside was pretty much raw. There was also a big pile of salsa on top of it. I swear there was more salsa than egg. I love Arlis's and have been going there somewhat regularly for breakfast for the past 2 years with my boyfriend. They have delicious Belgian Waffles; my recommendation is a Belgian waffles, with a topping of either strawberries or apples with whipped cream. Add a side of Bacon and an always delicious cup of coffee and you're set for breakfast. I also recommend their omelets; my boyfriend always gets them with a side of pancakes. The staff is extremely friendly every time we're there, and it's just a nice, chilled out environment. Our family loves this place. My husband loves diner food and breakfast is one of his favorite meals. Arlis's is usually his first choice when I ask him if he wants to go to breakfast. We aren't regulars because we live a little ways away, but I like this place. My favorites are the scramble bowl eggs with vegetables and sometimes I add bacon or sausage and I also really like the Eggs Benedict. My mom and kids love the French toast. The coffee is a little overpriced but they will come back and keep it full the entire time. It's just that if you have 6 or 7 people, everyone getting coffee can add almost $20 to your bill. We still will eat there, but that's just an observation. Friendly staff and great diner atmosphere. The restrooms are a little bit old. And, going back for that "one more try--maybe it was a fluke" we were mis-charged on our credit card an amount higher than the bill, while leaving a cash tip. I think we may be done. I ordered their meatloaf and eggs-the meatloaf was burnt, the pancakes were burnt. I sent it back and, they did give me pancakes that were not burnt, but my last few bites of pancakes tasted like onions and garlic. I am pretty sure it was intentional. I will never go back. read more
