After a whopping 5 minutes, Dr Shafer told me I had tendonitis in my knee. All I had was an X-ray (which can't even detect soft tissue damage). He never touched my knee, looked at my knee or ordered a MRI. He also had no solution for my alleged tendonitis, other than not using my knee. The whole visit was a waste of time and money! I sought a second opinion, and I'm really glad I did! I got my MRI and it turns out I have chondromalacia of the patella...which Dr Shafer might have been able to conclude if he looked at the X-ray or did an exam. His negligence is tantamount to malpractice. Don't go to this facility!!! read more

Patient Beware! Dr. Richard Martin is not only arrogant, but he didn't even fix (or at least try to fix) what I went to the doctor for in the first place! 9 months later and thousands of dollars poorer, and my leg pain is still bad. Sure they went in and cleaned some arthritis in my knee, but that wasn't what hurt! How bout $324 for a post op consult in which I asked Dr. Martin, "hey Doc, how long do you think I might be in pain before things start getting better?" He turns to me and says, "What do you think I have, a crystal ball?" Are You Kidding ME? And he's a Doctor? This guy's bad, and I'd say it to his face. Find someone else, you're health and well being is much more important that helping fill this guy's retirement coffers!! read more

I am no stranger to the Arizona Bone & Joint Specialists (now Ortho Arizona). I've had a few big surgeries, some less invasive procedures and a lot of physical therapy through this company. Out of the 6 doctors that have predominately been working there, I've seen 4 of them. All are skilled and all are confident in their profession and make you feel like you are in good hands. I would recommend this place wholeheartedly and without hesitation. I would like to showcase one of the doctors working at this practice as being all of the above with the addition of an amazing personality and patient rapport. Dr. Brian Shafer is amazing. Seriously. He's one of those hard to find doctors that has top notch skills plus an incredibly personable demeanor - super hard to find with doctors at this surgical level of expertise (believe me). Sidebar note: I recently took my 19 year old daughter to see him for a recurring knee displacement issue and she just loved him (how many 19 year olds love anyone or anything outside of their age demographic?). I have frozen shoulder and was seen by Dr. Brian Shafer. The first visit he was fine and gave me a whole bunch of exercises to do so it will cure my shoulder faster. He was telling me that surgery is not an option and that stretching and physical therapy is the cure. He recommended that I have 3 PT sessions a week, and I told him it depends on my insurance. He was rude and said well then you will never get better. I did not think anything of it. A month later I saw him again and he was trying to examine me and said that I have not been doing my exercises. He said that I have to go through the pain or I will never get better. He was rude and obnoxious. It was the way he said it. He was mean and do not have any bedside manners. I am going to get a 2nd opinion. I do not recommend Dr. Shafer. read more

This practice is made up of several orthopedic doctors. I see Dr. Bruns. I have been going to him for years for various things- and am always happy with the outcome. Last year I had 2 total knee replacements (I call them January and June) and now I am a new woman. I have no pain and can walk without any problems and no limp. Rehab was tough but not compared to living with the pain I was in. At least I knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel. When I go to my appointments I have my questions on my notes app ready to ask and Dr. Bruns is always happy to answer all of the questions I ask him. I must also compliment his assistant Julie. She is the best. She always explains everything you need to do or how to use anything you are given. I especially like that the practice has their emails on their websites so if I have a quick question, I can send her an email and not wait for an appointment. She will either get me the answer or let me know what to do. Lastly, one of the other doctors in the practice had to have a knee replacement and he chose Dr. Bruns to do it. That says something. There are also 2 offices. One is on the NE corner of 56th Street and Bell and the other is on 7th Street, north of Thunderbird on the west side of the street. First time here, I was referred by my Internist for a consultation. Ample parking in their lot is available; the waiting area is large with several seats available and there is a restroom and water fountain for the lobby area which is always a plus. The receptionist was cordial and the x-ray tech made me feel at ease. My only gripe was my appointment was for 3:30 pm I was called back at that time, then took a quick x-ray and was back in the exam room at 3:40 pm but the Dr. Shafer didn't see me until after 4:10 pm. The room was warm and stuffy and I began to get sleepy. This was only my first time so I don't know if that's a normal wait time to see him after you are called back into the exam room. Looking at some of the other reviews about him I am not sure I would have kept my appointment. But he was nice enough and didn't make me feel like I was wasting my time. I have a MRI schedule and will see what's the next step is soon and may be returning to him for an actual procedure. read more

All I can say is that 30 minutes waiting on the phone to hear that they (ABJ) didn't receive my referral because their fax machine "has been down", I was "told" to call my Dr and have them fax it again. My Dr did fax it immediately and then I waited another 30 minutes at ABJ to see if it got through. Finally gave up. If I weren't in pain I'd research some other organization that has it's act together. read more

Dr. Camarata and his team of nurses treated me great before and after my knee replacement surgery 3 months ago. I am going to a fantastic rehab facility called APEX rehab off Union Hill and 64st in Glendale. I had surgery as an out patient at the facility the AZ Bone doctors own. I went in at 9am for total knee and walked out at 12:30. I have done my rehab at home and at Apex. Try it and you will be so happy. read more

The staff was friendly and courteous. Dr. Shafer, however, was a narcissistic prick that actually argued with me about a previous shoulder surgery I had. I didn't have the records with me because it was 15 years ago, but he basically said I didn't have a rotator cuff repair at 29. As if I just make surgeries up for fun. He was not at all empathetic to the level of pain I was in and mocked me for having my 16 year old son drive me to the appointment. Don't go here! I called to make an appointment to have a sprained ankle and aching knee looked at by a PA I had seen there in the past. I was told he was not knowledgeable enough on both feet and knees so, they were scheduling me with a doctor. I showed up to my appointment and was told that a doctor can only see one issue at a time. I insisted he see me for both because that is what I scheduled for. When the doctor came in he seemed annoyed and hurried. He spent aproximately 10 minutes in the room with me. He said my foot was fine and asked when my knee hurt. I told him when and he told me not to do the things that made it hurt, like bending down, and left the room. That was it! They billed my insurance $375 for this visit. What a waste. I'm going to get my x-rays from the to take elsewhere. read more

I want to my primary care physician and they took x-rays and they said I needed to go see a specialist so I went over here and I brought my x-rays and they told me that that was more than a month ago so they would have to take another and I ask how much that would cost if they will Bill your insurance I said well no we can have a doctor look at the X-ray that I brought and if he's not happy with it then I'll take another x-ray but for now we'll do it this way when I saw the doctor I told her no problem that I had the front desk and you stated well they like to have current X-rays and I go a month is not crying well you know things to happen so I go really okay well we'll see what you know here and we'll go from there needless to say I went somewhere else read more

Been coming here for more than 15 years as I have arthritic joints. I get hit by a car last month. Long story short Dr. Martin closes out my workman's comp claim without any discussion at all. I leave 2 voicemails last week for Angela and the billing the department. No one returns my call. I show up today for my final treatment and I am turned away without paying for it on my health insurance. I now have to deal with insurance company confusion, a shot I can't have as I was prescribed for under my claim because it closed now. I will not becoming here ever again. I think Dr. Brian Shafer is fabulous! He speaks the truth and doesn't sugar coat the outcome. With many orthopedic procedures you have to endure the pain to get better. He made it very clear to my husband that going TO the point of pain would not allow his elbow to improve. He needed to go past it to feel better. Definitely go for second opinion . When we visited Dr Tindall for my mother's knee pain, all he was saying - I dont know what is happening, why so much pain. He was in too much hurry since he had many patients lined up and waiting, when we asked questions, he even got angry just bcoz he was getting late for other patients. This is absolutely not expected behavior for patients who are visiting you since they are in pain and not for fun !!! read more

Dr. Bruns is my go to Orthopedist. I have been going here for 20 plus years. Back, knee, plantar fasciitis etc etc. He performed my knee surgery in 2003. He is so nice, informative and compassionate. I hate to go anywhere else because no one compares. No one! read more

I met with Dr. Shafer yesterday to see about pain in my right knee. I am 62 and show cutting horses and ride jumping horses as well as walk at least a mile a day. My personal Doc thought I probably needed a replacement because of the constant pain and knows my lifestyle is active and keeps me healthy and young so off I went thinking having a replacement wouldn't not be great but if I could be pain free I would sure do it. I know a lot of people that show horses with knee replacements and do better than before...just the recovery period is a bummer. Anyway, Dr. Shafer said my knee was ruined and not fixable...okay I get that...but he said he would not think of doing a replacement unless I changed my lifestyle!! No riding..oh maybe up and down the desert...no walking,, etc. Get the rocker ready maybe I could take up knitting!! I always thought replacements, altho not pleasant, were done so you could maintain the active lifestyle you have not make it more comfortable to become a vegetable. The man has the bedside manner of a sadist and obviously has no confidence in his skill as a surgeon or he would put a new knee in and make me better not make me feel like I need to start looking into nursing homes. read more

I am on Cigna Health Spring preferred HMO. I had my PCP send the paperwork over to their office and called to make an apt about a month ago. Cigna will take free X Rays. Prior to making the apt with Dr Martin (like a month prior) I asked the receptionist if there would be XRay's involved or if the initial co-pay visit included the XRay. REAL simple question as far as I am concerned. Either it is or it isn't covered. Then I also asked if XRAY was not included in initial co pay visit how $$$ is it. Well after being bounced around and being given no real answer other then if we send your bill to your insurance co and the insurance co doesn't pay it your are liable for it. My response was if you don't know do you have a manager or billing person that would be able to answer this as I would ask Cigna to do the X ray for free it there is an additional charge for the XRay at the office. After a month of calling and going rond and round with their billing asking Cigna (Cigna telling me to ask them) I give up. If I can not get a straight answer to a simple question I feel it best I go to an office that has some one intelligent enough to be able to answer a simple question as this one. I never did get to see Dr Martin so I have no say as to his bed side manner or behavior. I do however know that if an office does not have someone intelligent enough to know what my insurance covers and what method of operation the doctor has we are parting ways now. Please do not contact me again, tear up any paper work and color me gone. read more

I suffered a sudden traumatic injury to my wrist in a fall at home. Was referred to AZ Bone & Joint as follow up from ER. From the minute I met Dr. Philip To I knew I was in good hands. Not only was the complicated surgery he performed very well done, but the follow up care and concern he showed for my well being and healing was nothing short of amazing. I have also been undergoing my hand and wrist therapy with Camie @ AZ B & J, and the experience has been awesome. Not only are these folks experts in what they do, they care about their patients and getting the best results they can possibly get. I sincerely hope I never have to undergo orthopaedic surgery again. If I do though, I would not consider going anywhere else after the experience I have had and the expertise and care that was shown to me. read more

AVOID Dr. Shafer! Took my Mom who is elderly to Dr. Shafer to look at her hip which has been paining her a lot since having hip surgery. The front office staff, and the person doing x-rays were fantastic! However when it comes to Dr. Shafer his social skills and lack of empathy astounded me! He was extremely impatient with my elderly mother who has a hard time getting her words out. He often acted annoyed by her asking questions. I felt so bad for my mom. She's up there in age and time is valuable, I feel bad she had to be talked down nd was made to feel like an annoyance by Dr. Shafer. Would give 0 stars if I could. I wouldn't want anybody's mother treated like he did with mine today. read more

I am writing this review (albeit a little late) for Dr. Brian Shafer and the staff at Arizona Bone and Joint on North 7th St. I have seen Dr. Shafer on two occasions over the last couple years, both for Bursa sac issues on my knee. When I first saw him, I thought I had injured my knee and could barely walk. Upon examination, he diagnosed an infection in the bursa sac. He said it needed immediate antibiotics (gave me a shot at the office and a prescription to be filled) and anti-inflammatory. I was hesitant because I was sure it was injured with how much pain I was in though I didn't remember doing anything to it. Dr Shafer smiled and said if I didn't feel better in a couple days to call him back. I called him three days later to thank him and share that it was greatly improved. Fast forward a couple years and the other knee..I scheduled an appointment, was seen quickly, greeted by a friendly receptionist, and seen again by Dr. Shafer. Same / same...problem solved. I found the whole staff from the front desk, to the nurse, to Dr. Shafer, and finally the billing process for my insurance to be nothing less than stellar! Thank you to everyone. I found Dr. Shafer to be knowledgeable, friendly, empathetic, and would recommend him highly to anyone needing treatment for his specialty. read more

I've been seeing Dr. Shafer over the past couple of months for my knee, since he successfully treated my shoulder issue several years back. Dr. Shafer clearly explained what was going on with my knee (and previously, with my shoulder) in layman's terms and without being condescending. I am a 56 year old runner, and Dr. Shafer indicated that, because of the issue with my knee, which he explained to me very clearly, it was still possible that I might be able to return to running, but that I had to make some changes and would not be able to run as fast or as far as previously. Well, as hard as it was to hear this, it made total sense, considering the wear and tear on my knees over the years. I appreciate the time that Dr. Shafer has taken with me at each of my visits, and the effort he goes to in order to make sure I understand the issues, and which ones can, and cannot, be "fixed". I continue to follow Dr. Shafer's instructions; my knee is slowly improving; and I look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead, but with a clear understanding that I have to take care of my body! I saw Dr Tindall for a knee issue that hasn't been resolved. I usually sit for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour each time, only for my doc to never read my chart and assume I have some other ailment, and then walk out about 2 minutes into our appointment, long before I even have any chance to ask questions. I'll be finding a new doc that is cognizant of my time, and actually fixes the issue. read more

My PCP sent me to Arizona Bone & Joint Specialists to evaluate the pain I was feeling in my hips. I met with Dr. Tindal who x-rayed my hips and determined I had arthritis and recommended I go to Simon Med to have some kind of lubricant injected into the joints. When I got to Simon Med, they told me they couldn't inject me because I was on blood thinners. On my first visit to Dr. Tindal, I had written on the paper work I filled out that I was on blood thinners, but Dr. Tindal apparently didn't notice it. On my way home from Simon Med, I stopped by Dr. Tindal's office to tell him Simon Med wouldn't do the injections because of the blood thinner thing. He seemed perplexed about their reason and said he did them all the time and told me to come to his Bell Rd. office on Monday and he would do it there. I showed up there on Monday, paid another $30 copay and went to the exam room. When the doctor came in, he thought I was coming in about my knees. I told him I was there to have my hips injected. I had to explain to him again about why Simon Med had turned me away because of the blood thinners I take. He appeared to be unfamiliar with the drug's name: Coumiden and it's generic name, Warfarin. He then said that, maybe he shouldn't do the injection because the other doctors had warned against it. He left the room and sent his assistant back with a printed sheet of exercises he thought I should do instead of doing the injections. I wasted two work days and my $30 copay and the fees he billed Medicare for essentially nothing but a printed sheet of exercises to try. He had already established through the x-rays that I had arthritis and that I needed the injections, so why did he think exercises would be a substitute? read more

Wow, can you believe there is a doctors office that still exists where they did not ask me for money up front? I was warmly greeted and did not have to show ID or give up my firstborn just to see a doctor, which is the norm these days!!! My 14 year old sustained a knee injury at cheer practice and the first ortho I brought her to would not see her without a $250 payment before she even saw him!!! We sat in that first office with her crying in pain for 40 min while they haggled over her AIA school insurance. We were first seen by Dr. Grubers PA, who immediately put my daughter at ease and explained her injury then did a set of xrays. Dr. Gruber then came in and let us know the course of treatment. Orders were sent out then and there and the nurses were also fabulous!!! I cannot say enough good things about this office and the way we were treated.
