I've been a longtime fan of Area 51 Cupcakery, so naturally, I trusted them with one of the most important desserts I've ever ordered -- a custom cake for my brother's first-ever surprise 50th birthday party. Two weeks before the event, I came in person with a printed cake design, a clear color theme (green, cream, and white), and a macaron accent order to go with it. I was flexible on the design details, just committed to the vision. On the day of pickup, I arrived a little late -- my fault -- but there was no cake waiting, and my order couldn't be found. Hannah behind the counter did her best, and when owner Robert walked in, I calmly explained everything from the start. I won't lie -- I was heartbroken more than angry. This was a big night. OBSESSED! Area 51 is veteran and locally owned. There is a location in north Naperville and south Naperville. They have daily specials that change every month. Yuuuup, I'll be here on a monthly basis. They also have a punch card system. Every 12 cupcakes will get you 1 cupcake for free. The inside is super cool, there are numerous spots for photo ops and they even have a ring light and camera holder if interested in using it. My first time visiting I tried the following cupcakes: chai pumpkin latte (daily special and DANGGGG DELICIOUS), Almond wedding (my least favorite but still good, I think almond cupcakes just aren't for me), cookies and cream (divine, rich, 2nd favorite), and the Boston cream (also 2nd favorite lol). All of the cupcakes were moist, fluffy, and full of flavor. They are made daily and you can feel and taste the love. Area 51 is definitely my favorite cupcake spot of all time. I've gone to Area 51 probably every week since finding em and I can't get enough. They also made cupcakes for my baby's gender reveal. Yesterday was the first time we stopped into Area 51 - and it definitely won't be the last. Wonderful bakery with delectable delights. We walked away with four huge cupcakes. My husband wanted Jersey Mikes (next door) and when I saw a place named Area 51, I had to check it out. You see, I have a room in my house I call Area 51 with a strong Alien theme, so it was kismet I eat a cupcake from a like- named place. I happen to enter Area 51 two minutes before closing (though didn't realize), but the owner was still super friendly and welcoming. She liked my Roswell T-Shirt and I told her about my own personal Area 51. She didn't have much left (being closing time), but I picked out a flavor and was on my way. Just had the worst experience trying to place a cake order at Area 51 Cupcakery. This was my second time here in a week trying to place a cake order. I've ordered from here several times in the past. I even ordered a cake here for my husband's birthday in June. I walked into the bakery and there were no customers! The associate working in the store told me he was on the phone finishing up with a cake order. I waited patiently for 15 minutes while he talked on the phone with another customer. All of a sudden a flurry of customers walked in the store just as he was finishing up his call. He immediately walked over and started helping the other customers who had just walked in! I'd been meaning to stop in if only for the name. No cupcakes for me; I got cookies, an "Atomic Parfait" and a slice of cake. As you would expect from a place that features cupcakes where the frosting is as tall as the cake, this place is about indulgence. The pumpkin cookies are monster cookie sized, and the magic cookie bars are the size of 4 normal cookies. They were tasty, as was the slice of cake (two layers of cake, frosting, a 3/8" slab of mascarpone filling - it was a slice, I knew exactly what I was getting into). You may want to share the Atomic Parfait with someone; it's layers of cake, fruit sauce and whipped cream, which traveled surprisingly well. I came here mostly to write about the coffee. I got a vanilla latte. There was a very strong artificial sweetener flavor which completely overwhelmed the coffee, and I didn't finish it. I think perhaps in the quest for indulgence they overdosed the syrup; if you don't like artificial vanilla flavor, get an Americano or cafe au lait. read more

As you probably know, this location is now Area 51 instead of Smallcakes (which I believe is due to not renewing the franchise agreement, but don't quote me). Small Cakes Stopped in to get a sweet treat and cup of coffee because we saw the sign from the road that said coffee and cupcakes. Unfortunately, they hadn't opened in their new location that would be offering this so we drove back a little in the strip mall to their location that offers cupcakes and ice cream. We decided to try birthday cake, carrot cake, red velvet and coconut cupcakes. Honestly, I'm a little torn here. The cupcake themselves were light, fluffy and moist as a cupcake should be, but the flavors were less than was I'd expected. The non-perils on the birthday cake frosting had too strong of their flavor (not sure how to describe that food color non-peril coating flavor), the coconut cupcake seemed like vanilla cupcake and if I'm not mistaken had a cream cheese frosting dusted with coconut flakes. Again, not exactly the flavors I expect from a coconut cupcake. Not sure that I'd go back for cupcakes, but their cake decorations are marvelous and considering the fluffy moist cupcakes, I'd assume their cakes are just as fluffy.
