I've been a longtime fan of Area 51 Cupcakery, so naturally, I trusted them with one of the most important desserts I've ever ordered -- a custom cake for my brother's first-ever surprise 50th birthday party. Two weeks before the event, I came in person with a printed cake design, a clear color theme (green, cream, and white), and a macaron accent order to go with it. I was flexible on the design details, just committed to the vision. On the day of pickup, I arrived a little late -- my fault -- but there was no cake waiting, and my order couldn't be found. Hannah behind the counter did her best, and when owner Robert walked in, I calmly explained everything from the start. I won't lie -- I was heartbroken more than angry. This was a big night. What happened next is why I'm writing this review. Robert and his team didn't hesitate. They snapped a photo of the design from my phone, asked every detail, and promised to make it right -- with Robert personally delivering the cake to the venue (thankfully just 5 minutes away). OBSESSED! Area 51 is veteran and locally owned. There is a location in north Naperville and south Naperville. They have daily specials that change every month. Yuuuup, I'll be here on a monthly basis. They also have a punch card system. Every 12 cupcakes will get you 1 cupcake for free. The inside is super cool, there are numerous spots for photo ops and they even have a ring light and camera holder if interested in using it. My first time visiting I tried the following cupcakes: chai pumpkin latte (daily special and DANGGGG DELICIOUS), Almond wedding (my least favorite but still good, I think almond cupcakes just aren't for me), cookies and cream (divine, rich, 2nd favorite), and the Boston cream (also 2nd favorite lol). All of the cupcakes were moist, fluffy, and full of flavor. They are made daily and you can feel and taste the love. Area 51 is definitely my favorite cupcake spot of all time. I've gone to Area 51 probably every week since finding em and I can't get enough. They also made cupcakes for my baby's gender reveal. We bought hot fudge sundae, coconut, pink chocolate, and Boston cream. Oh, and we walked away with a pupcake for our Papillion. I used to be a cupcake baker, and I love to find cupcake bakeries and do a taste test. This bakery did not disappoint. This bakery is amazing! My husband wanted Jersey Mikes (next door) and when I saw a place named Area 51, I had to check it out. You see, I have a room in my house I call Area 51 with a strong Alien theme, so it was kismet I eat a cupcake from a like- named place. I happen to enter Area 51 two minutes before closing (though didn't realize), but the owner was still super friendly and welcoming. She liked my Roswell T-Shirt and I told her about my own personal Area 51. She didn't have much left (being closing time), but I picked out a flavor and was on my way. Just had the worst experience trying to place a cake order at Area 51 Cupcakery. This was my second time here in a week trying to place a cake order. I've ordered from here several times in the past. I even ordered a cake here for my husband's birthday in June. I walked into the bakery and there were no customers! The associate working in the store told me he was on the phone finishing up with a cake order. I waited patiently for 15 minutes while he talked on the phone with another customer. All of a sudden a flurry of customers walked in the store just as he was finishing up his call. He immediately walked over and started helping the other customers who had just walked in! I continued to wait while he took another customer instead of helping me. Then he walked over to help another customer. I said wow and just walked out. Unbelievable! I guess he thinks their time is more valuable than mine. Well too bad because they just lost out on a pricey cake order and a repeat customer who had been very supportive of their business. Moist, not overly sweet, and the mini size was right if you wanted a tiny snack (2-3 would be more like a regular cupcake). I'd been meaning to stop in if only for the name. No cupcakes for me; I got cookies, an "Atomic Parfait" and a slice of cake. As you would expect from a place that features cupcakes where the frosting is as tall as the cake, this place is about indulgence. The pumpkin cookies are monster cookie sized, and the magic cookie bars are the size of 4 normal cookies. They were tasty, as was the slice of cake (two layers of cake, frosting, a 3/8" slab of mascarpone filling - it was a slice, I knew exactly what I was getting into). You may want to share the Atomic Parfait with someone; it's layers of cake, fruit sauce and whipped cream, which traveled surprisingly well. I came here mostly to write about the coffee. I got a vanilla latte. There was a very strong artificial sweetener flavor which completely overwhelmed the coffee, and I didn't finish it. I think perhaps in the quest for indulgence they overdosed the syrup; if you don't like artificial vanilla flavor, get an Americano or cafe au lait. read more

As you probably know, this location is now Area 51 instead of Smallcakes (which I believe is due to not renewing the franchise agreement, but don't quote me). As far as I can remember, the cupcake flavors seem to be the same. We got a hot fudge sundae, a birthday cake, and a peanut butter cupcake. All were pretty tasty. Small Cakes Stopped in to get a sweet treat and cup of coffee because we saw the sign from the road that said coffee and cupcakes. Not sure that I'd go back for cupcakes, but their cake decorations are marvelous and considering the fluffy moist cupcakes, I'd assume their cakes are just as fluffy. wish I could give them -100 stars. Ordered cupcakes for my daughter's 2nd birthday party. The day of the party I went in to pay for the cupcakes and to see them and upon opening the cupcakes did not match the theme of my daughters 2nd birthday" two wild" birthday party nor the cupcake toppers that I personally purchased and dropped off. When I asked where are my cupcake toppers I was told "oh you had toppers" she then went to call the other store and stated that they can deliver the cupcakes. It was 3:21 my daughter's birthday party started at 3:45 I said will they be on time which I was told no probably not. The girl was dismissive and rude not even offering an apology. The cupcakes looked like wedding cupcakes not cupcakes for a 2 year old birthday party. I ended up leaving the cupcakes which was unfair to me and my daughter. To ruin the part of the birthday that kids look forward to is inexcusable. To make matters worse, the young girl called me during my daughter's birthday party to ask when would I be able to pick up the cupcake toppers. Still today no call from management nor owner to apologize or anything.
