I am married and have joint insurance coverage, yet the front office did not properly run my married insurance plan. Instead, I was repeatedly told that I "aged out at 26," which is irrelevant when you are legally married and covered under a spouse's policy. This showed a concerning lack of understanding of how insurance coordination works. When you're discussing thousands of dollars for orthodontic treatment, accuracy and knowledge are essential. Unfortunately, the pricing confusion and lack of follow-up made me lose confidence in moving forward here. After reviewing the most recent feedback posted this year, I noticed a pattern of negative experiences. In hindsight, I should have paid closer attention. I ultimately chose Smilebliss Orthodontics (512 E Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ 85282), where I was quoted $2,900 without insurance. They properly reviewed my insurance, and my coverage handled the majority of the cost -- leaving me with only $900 out of pocket. I have MetLife insurance through American Airlines, and they clearly take care of their employees by offering strong benefits. When processed correctly, the coverage worked exactly as it should. I went with a different place at first because it was closer to where we were living. Well, that turned out to be a mistake. I ended up having a bad experience there and finally switched to S&L. Dr. Ngo and his team fixed everything the other dentist had messed up. Right away I knew my wife had been right all along. I've been going to S&L for four years now and they really are the best dental office I've ever been to. Dr. Ngo has removed all my old metal fillings and replaced them with modern ones, plus he's done a couple of crowns for me. Everything looks and feels great. My wife has also been extremely happy with all the work he's done for her too. I'm almost 55 and I've seen a bunch of top-rated, highly recommended dentists over the years, both here in the US and a couple in Mexico. Nothing else comes close. One thing I have to mention is how good Dr. Ngo is with people who hate dental visits or get nervous about pain. His work is excellent, but it's the way he takes care of you that makes the biggest difference. For example, the way he does Novocaine shots is unbelievable. You barely feel it at all. Every dentist out there should learn his technique. With all that said, I do think the front office experience could be better. If the customer service up front matched Dr. David's clearly caring vibe, it would be 100% perfect. If you're looking for a truly professional dentist who gives five-star care and service, this is the place. Dr. David Ngo at S&L is the only one I would recommend without any hesitation.

They seem very knowledgable and seem to know what they're doing when it comes to dentistry, but my concerns are more in the administration side of things. I changed jobs earlier this year and got new insurance with a common major insurance provider, and I needed to get a procedure done. I asked them what the procedure would cost and they gave me a quote, which was already expensive, and I paid that at the time of service. However, when I came in for a routine cleaning 6 months later, they said the insurance "didn't pay as much as they thought" and stuck me with MORE THAN DOUBLE their original quote. I looked into the insurance claim and called the insurance company myself, and the insurance company paid exactly what was according to their billing schedule. There were no surprises. I think the office knew (or should have known, because they're the professionals and this is what they do) that this would happen, and they dishonestly gave me a lower quote, did the service, and then stuck me with the even more expensive bill (but to their credit, they did give me a lower price than what they billed to insurance, but it was still VERY expensive that I was not prepared for). Additionally, I distinctly recall the procedure treated four teeth, but then on the bill and insurance claim, they say they treated six. Unfortunately, I don't really know how to argue this, especially because it happened so long ago. I suspect they didn't contact me about this issue earlier for this exact reason. Again, dishonest. Another concern with this dentist is that it's unprofessional that they use Zelle to get around credit/debit card transaction fees. Every merchant has to deal with card transaction fees, they shouldn't be up-charging that cost and they shouldn't be using Zelle, which is supposed to just be a peer-to-peer payment network. Lastly, as much as I love dogs, I don't think it's hygienic that they keep a dog in their office. In all, I started off loving this dentist, and very disappointed that they turned out to be this unprofessional and dishonest. I'm sad I'll have to go elsewhere from now on.

It was literally the most thorough dental exam I've ever had, with digital X-rays (including the panos that my last dentist didn't do), CT scans if needed, lots of photos, a tooth-by-tooth evaluation, oral cancer screening, even looking at mobility, jaw movement, etc. (Finally my knowledge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle comes in handy.) Dr. Pappas even pointed out something I'd brought up to a different dentist years ago and had completely forgotten about. He's also very transparent about whether a treatment can wait or needs to be done right away. The hygienist I had was also very thorough, so I definitely felt like I was in good hands all around. I switched here after a decade at a different dental clinic that had been cutting a lot of corners. As someone without specialized knowledge, navigating dental care can be frustrating and time-consuming. I find it so frustrating--as someone with no real knowledge of dentistry--when I feel like I to have to spend time attempting to research what dentists or other doctors should be doing so I can make sure they actually do it, or to figure out what to do about pain or issues they dismiss or tell me to ignore. We all have enough things to worry about without trying to become amateur dental or medical researchers. So it's a breath of fresh air to go somewhere like Arcadia Dental Arts where I can just kick back and relax knowing they're covering all the bases. Also the office is really nice, and it's right near Lola Coffee. And they have a super cute new patient gift bag, which was a nice touch! Glad to have found a new dental home.

Well, the next thing I did - started to go through Yelp in a frantic search for a good dentist that could help me. After my thorough research, deep into the night, I left several messages to the dentist offices in the area pleading to take me in if they had an opening. This was now Friday morning and the thought of remaining looking like this even past weekend - was frightening. So, next thing that happened - I will never forget. At around 8:30 am - Dr. Liu himself calls me back and I could hear in his voice he nearly felt as bad as I did for what happened. He was absolutely booked solid and his official hours that day were scheduled to end at noon. He considered the options and the best we could come up with is the appointment on Monday. He did give me a glimpse of hope by saying - "I will let you know if I get any time to maybe just examine you". Well, less than an hour later I get a phone call from Dr. Liu - "Ok, I have a little time - just come in, so I can examine and see what is happening". Fast forward several hours - Dr. Liu not only saw me for x-rays, he and his amazing assistant Lesley, arranged for me to stay after hours!! Dr. Liu fixed my chipped front tooth with such perfection, incredible attention to details that, frankly was astonishing. Dr. Liu is sincerely the most compassionate doctor I have ever met. He really strives to address the root of the problem in addition to paying meticulous attention to details. And the price he charged me for this service - was more than fair! I really hope you never have to go through experience like mine but in case something happens - Dr. Liu will help you out, that I am sure of.

I went in there looking like I was dating my cousin and left looking like I'm dating the cast of the Real Housewives of Miami. Dr. Patel is second to none, and he has an amazing staff. Every one of his staff members that I have had any interaction with are great, but the main ones I have had interactions with are Dr. Patel and his assistant Little Jackie, as well as Nicole, the treatment coordinator. She always helps me figure out my life and updates my treatment plan every time I go (finally down to one page). Liz helped me book the appointment that changed my teeth forever. I went in there with a messed-up grill, like I had been chewing on a brick. Dr. came up with an amazing plan to get me back to looking human, and Little Jackie was so kind and showed empathy. She is excellent at her job. She made me feel like she understood what I was going through and it made the whole process so much better. I had some horror-movie type of stuff done, but thanks to the amazing skills of Dr. Patel, I never felt any pain. I have had multiple extractions, root canals, fillings and crowns; no pain at all. My last dentist was so bad. He had a new staff every time I went, and on top of that he put ALL CAPS on my teeth so I couldn't stop yelling ha ha. I was about to give up, but one amazing Saturday morning I woke up with the most excruciating pain in my mouth that my eyebrows were throbbing. It was so bad I laid in the bathtub in the fetal position eating Ibuprofen until Monday morning when I called Dr. Patel's office for the first time. I was a brand-new patient, so I slipped Liz a $100 and she got me in that same day (jk, Liz got me in with no bribe) and Dr. Patel extracted my tooth on the spot. Even though he risked missing his 3:30 p.m. tee time, he put me first (instant relief). I have been a fan ever since. If you ever feel intimidated or nervous, don't worry--Dr. Patel will give you some shots, top-shelf stuff. I just hope he doesn't retire before I'm done with my treatment plan or I'm going to have to finish it in Nogales, Mexico. I used to be a huge fan of the Phoenix Suns and Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle, Cedric Ceballos, Wesley Persons and Mark West, but now I'm a fan of Dr. Patel (BEST), Little Jackie (EXCELLENT), Nicole (skipped my vacation to Puerto Vallarta because she said I owed money for a tooth... dental work is always expensive but for the skill level of Dr. Patel it is very reasonable), Jackie (hygienist, took me 2 months to get an appointment but it was so worth it...she didn't hurt me at all), Liz (first point of contact and helped me get the ball rolling (accepts bribes jk)), and Maria (great assistant, so nice).
