Unreliable CNA's and nursing staff. Didn't like being questioned about the care given for a loved one.

After hip replacement surgery, I was an inpatient here for two weeks (March 7-21, 2024)--I did not…read morego anywhere else during this time. They rightly earn at least one star due to excellent PT and OT plus Bella (OT) and Bea (aide), bright lights who made my time there bearable. Wheatridge Manor missed a chance for a higher rating because they almost killed me with a wrong assessment and then a 10-hour delay of needed treatment on March 21. I had contracted strep A sepsis there (and went into kidney failure), necessitating ambulance transport from Wheatridge Manor to Lutheran Hospital ER where they fought for hours to save my life. Source of infection: untreated bug bites (about 3-19 at Wheatridge Manor) which became infected and then developed into a bad case of cellulitis. Additional details: from the time (around 4am) of my first physical symptoms on the morning of March 21 (pain, uncontrollable shaking, vomiting; a few hours later, expressive aphasia--inability to process language), the night nurse Pam and day nurse Jennifer wrongly assessed me as experiencing a panic attack due to "anxiety" about going home. Pam also chewed me out for taking time away from other patients who "really" needed her care (my friend witnessed that unpleasant exchange). I was in and out of awareness for the rest of that day. This terrified me (my symptoms as well as being ignored and dismissed by the nursing staff) as I knew something was very, very wrong. Needing support and a witness, I called my friend (retired nurse). She arrived at the facility around 5am and stayed with me all day. Finally, around 2pm, I asked her to phone my high school BFF in Houston who's a doctor. Dr friend had two words for us: "Ambulance now!" Wheatridge's day nurse, Jennifer, only made the phone call due to pressure from my witness. These two dear friends, along with Lutheran's ER and other medical personnel, saved my life. Accordingly, I do not recommend Wheatridge Manor for anyone. Yes, the PT and OT are great, but the rest of the facility lacks adequate, coordinated care. However, if that place seems the best placement for your loved one, be sure to check on them frequently and to advocate for their needs or they may either almost die like me, or actually die, from inadequate care.

What matters is that nursing staff, CNAs and kitchen staff all saw my loved one as an individual who was suffering a lot of indignity and confusion. She was treated with utmost respect and good cheer which I think was as good as any other medicine prescribed by an MD. No one--and I mean non one--came into her room without a big smile and a willingness to greet her kindly and meet her needs. Yes, we had to wait sometimes, but this isn't a 4 star hotel. No one was standing about chatting while we waited. What mattered to me was that care was always given with great kindness and compassion and even good cheer. I spent much of my day there over three weeks and will truly miss everyone I met, including many residents.

Bad: The Doctor changes your prescriptions without telling you or anyone in your family. This caused me some health trouble. About three days a week Arvada care uses what are called Agency Nurses. A portion of these omit giving medications entirely, or omit some of the medications.

A family member of ours living in Denver with parkinson's and anxiety who was living at home alone, was taken here for rehabilitation when she had fallen. During her time in Gardens on Quail's nursing home she was able to recover, but decided to stay. She, as well as our family, decided that it was a safer and better lifestyle to continue living under the care of Gardens on Quail's nurses. Since moving in, her anxiety has been much less severe, and she has made many new friends. Not to mention that it is a beautiful place to call home. Many of our family members are living in Denver, so it makes for an easy drive being located just outside the city in Arvada. Thank you Gardens on Quail for superb service, we appreciate it!

Speaking from an employees perspective:…read more I have been on with the team for about 8 months now. I've worked in the field for 8 years ( so as you can imagine, I've had training and experience in several facilities) This place was absolutely draining, on all levels. The façade of a beautiful building, and well lit gardens, and exceptional " Care provided to the residents" is absolute delusion. I have watched our team, my residents whom I provide care to, and my own well being turn completely downhill, which is why I feel the need to speak on this. Management and HR are not friendly, or welcoming or empathetic towards care staff at all, instead they are rude and entitled and walk the building with nothing but a higher demeanor, than those who actually provide care to these residents and work extremely hard on the floor providing care, and respect and constant interaction to these residents. I have not had a single, welcoming or open minded- conversation with any management since our previous HR has left the building. I have instead ran into conversations where those who do their jobs, and do an amazing job at it, are consistently belittled by HR and management. Yet, those who are lazy but favorited by management are constantly allowed passes for behaviors and LACK of care to these residents. The job itself is stressful, yes. But we all get into this field even as Caregivers to do our jobs and do the best we can. We also have lives outside of work environments, and some harder than others. This is where survival mode and flight of fight play a role- but to those that show up everyday and WORK THE FLOOR- we are discarded and picked apart -daily, but also while being extremely understaffed and drained ourselves. Yet still- NO support from our HR or ED or management as a whole. I have never felt so out of touch with a work environment claiming to do so much good for these residents- meanwhile disregarding and completely out of touch with their employees whom actually work with these residents and are the ones providing care. Pay compensation and expectations are not lined up at all. all this goes to say- Please DO BETTER, for our residents, for your care staff. for OURSELVES. No job should be or feel this draining on every level.
