Ararat Market

This place is the best. The owner made us the best subs we've ever had. He made sure every bite in the sub had all the ingredients in it. It was so amazing. I'm literally thinking of going back tonight to get another sub.

Service is great, produce is great. It's the best neighborhood market you can ask for. And to top it off, they make great sandwiches.

The smoked turkey was piled high with tomatoes, pesto, banana peppers, provolone cheese and balsamic glaze packed into a perfectly toasted thin bread. Every bite had so much flavor and the ingredients tasted very fresh. The portions are also fantastic for the price. For $16 the sandwich came with two huge halves that were easily enough to share or save one for later. Already thinking about I'm ordering next time. Nickos, you've officially ruined mediocre sandwiches for me. 10/10!

The breakfast sandwich was by far the worst of the three. It looked amazing, but the taste was a completely different story. The eggs weren't salted, let alone seasoned, and the entire sandwich was incredibly bland. It genuinely tasted like cardboard, which was especially disappointing given how appetizing it looked. The pastrami sandwich was a 5/10 at best. I wasn't a fan of the texture of the pastrami, and the meat itself lacked any particularly memorable flavor. The turkey pesto was easily the best of the three. The bread was good, the ingredients worked well together, and the sandwich was nicely assembled. It was the only one I actually enjoyed. Overall, the sandwiches looked much better than they tasted. With so many good sandwich spots around, I wouldn't return.

And a personal breakthrough: I used to schlep all the way to Larchmont Cheese & Wine or Bay Cities before beach days for a proper sandwich. Not anymore. I have sandwich geniuses living right down the street. The bread? Exceptional. The cheeses? Dangerous. The meats? I may never recover. And then there's the lemon Italian ice. My daughter and I have been here three times in the last week, shamelessly returning like two neighborhood raccoons with excellent taste. It is the perfect antidote to a scorching Altadena afternoon. Service was great and the girl at the counter was lovely but the price of everything was way too steep and it didn't deliver at all. We ordered the mortadella and the artichoke. Everything has been delicious so far, the fillings are high quality, balanced, and sandwich sizes aren't bad for the cost. The J-Stilly is my fave, the balsamic grilled chicken is super yummy with stracciatella, and tried the Prosciutto Panino which is also fantastic. Only complaint is the crust on the bread is a bit tough, maybe an issue with delivery, or a personal preference cause I don't like reaaaally crusty bread. I just have to wrestle my sandwich most times otherwise I'd get food here much more frequently.

If you don't know already from your map, this is located inside the Pokitomik in the Glendale Marketplace. I only wish that there was a sign outside that said "Si Roma - Italian Sandwiches" on the window so that more people might be enticed to look inside. The only thing I saw was their logo, which people might not immediately recognize. I've tried their Si Roma and the turkey allora before but this time we went with the Americano, which was a pretty hefty sandwich! You could share this between two people, honestly. What I appreciate was that it wasn't too packed where you have a hard time eating the thing. The stirato bread is good, perfectly sturdy for the sandwich and has this white dust (flour?) on it that makes it different from your standard sandwich shop. My favorite part of every Si Roma sandwich is the generous helping of stracciatella cheese, and the is time we got this lil cup of honey/fig/parm sauce thing to slather onto the sandwich as well, which added a deliciously sweet dimension to it. They also have a $5.95 sandwich that I would love to try next time. They bill it as an affordable option for people working in the area which I think is great given how much more expensive things have gotten! Wishing you all the best and success, Si Roma!

Unfortunately they changed their bread to some sort of soft, bready ciabatta. The previous bread was of much higher quality that really made the sandwich taste and feel like an artisanal Italian sandwich. Could be a cost-cutting measure? Who knows. I'm going to cool it with the orders for now and try again sometime in the future. Hope the change is temporary :(
