I really enjoy Aqua World because it's incredibly clean, and the snails and shrimp are all healthy. The prices are pretty typical for a box store, but they're reasonable since a box store needs to make some money to keep running. They don't have a huge variety of shrimp, but overall, it's definitely the best aquatic store in St. Louis at the moment. read more

Just got back into aquariums after 30 years. Putting together a 30 gallon and main focus is on aquatic plants. Two very nice women working were interested, attentive and very helpful. Tropical world on Watson was the exact opposite. Tropical world didn't seem to care. Growing up, there were these kind of stores everywhere - not anymore. With all the money and time I've invested in this, it's great to know there are helpful people. I'll be driving from Saint Charles and this will be my place. read more

Went on a whim for maybe a snail and a plant. Asked the lone person working there to grab me a snail. Out of maybe 20 of the same snails, he intentionally grabbed one floating on top of the tank. I mentioned this and he became irate, explaining that snails do this, and became fairly loud about it. $5, oh well. But as I expected the snail was DOA, and I'm certain the salesperson knew this and took advantage of me. From what I've gathered, the shop is going out of business (shocker) and are trying to liquidate their stock. STAY AWAY. The staff are rude and have no respect for their customers. We went to both AquaWorld locations in the same day and both we very clean, fish looked like they were in great condition, prices are a little on the higher side but definitely not outrageous for quality fish, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We got fish at both locations, I only got a picture of our sweet baby oscar, but they all looked great and are doing well. We went to a lot of other fish stores in the area that day and there were some very very sad looking fish at other stores. AquaWorld would definitely be my first go to for future fish in the stl area. read more

Very disappointed in this company's customer service during the pandemic. On 2 separate occasions, spent over an hour on the phone speaking with their fish expert about Cichlids. He was very knowledgeable and suggested that I purchase Firemouths. Now, this firm is about 30 min. from my home, but they were the only store that I found had both the cichlids and provided curbside pickup. To help their business during the pandemic, I also ordered about $50 of accessories, even though I have a Petco less than a mile from my home. The first time I arranged a pickup, the gentleman I spoke with with was not working, and hadn't left any directions for his replacement. Several days later I tried again, and the expert promised that this time he would leave a note for his partner. I called the partner that morning, and he confirmed that he had the seen the note and was preparing my order. I drove the 1/2 hour to the store, had the employee place my order in the trunk, and drove home. When I arrived and opened the trunk, there were no fish, only the accessories. I was irate and immediately called the store. The employee on duty told me had not seen any information about fish. Now I am faced with a decision wether or not to go back to the store. Normally, this would only be an inconvenience, but I am at high risk for contracting Covid-19 and was told by my physician to stay at home unless absolutely necessary. I am new to area, a year ago I stopped in just to look and see the fish... if you are looking for personal hands on friendly experience, look no where else; I decided to try a salt water tank, mike ( owner) came out and delivered the tank and set Everything up... it's been a year ago and I traded up for a bigger tank; mike and chris came and changed out the tanks... Every one who works at aqua world are very friendly, experienced and knowledgeable, ... they will help you decide the many many options on tanks, fish , coral, plants ect.. when you visit aqua world at either location, you will be not only be impressed by the very friendly staff but mostly how clean the tanks are and how healthy the fish are... they really do care about their customers.... Aqua world is a family business that has been in business for over 50 years and it shows!! read more

We have been to the Aqua World location in Ellisville several times now. My daughter would go once a week if she could. Zel has helped us on several occasions and has always been very knowledgable and attentive. We had one fish die and they have been talking us through the process of making sure our tank is healthy and the problem taken care of before introducing any other fish. I appreciate them caring about the fish and customers more than a sale. They have listened to my soft spoken daughter's concerns and questions with patience and responded with information. We've taken several people there just to check out all the different varieties of fish and options available. read more

We went in as a family so excited to start up our home salt water fish tank. There was one employee in the store and spent the entire 20 minutes we were in there talking with ONE customer. He did not even acknowledge that we were there, just kept going back and forth where we standing saying "excuse me", clearly we were in the way of his other customer. We waited patiently to ask questions on products to purchase and then the employee finally said his first words to us, which were "DONT TOUCH THE TANK" to my 9 year old daughter who was just pointing out a fish she liked. Under no circumstances would I ever recommend this place. I've been in there three times and both employees have been rude and unwilling to help. I went in recently asking about algae in my koi pond. The lady sharply replied saying I had to use algaecide, and that it was on the shelf. She finally walked over to show it to me. I then told her that I had a 300 gallon pond and was wondering if the bottle I was holding would be enough for the season, and she condescendingly said, "It says right on the front of the bottle!" I then inquired about plants for the pond and she said, "They're in back." Not once did she smile or act as though she was happy to help. I took the hint that apparently they felt I was not a customer, but instead a bother. I went to the back and the area was pretty disgusting and not well organized. No signs or labels to denote anything I was looking at. I asked a few questions about the plants and another customer walked in. Instead of attending to me, she spent 15 minutes or more bagging up plants for the other customer. Out of frustration I left, hopped on my phone, searched for another pond supply store, and happily found Chalily just a few miles down Manchester. Night and day difference at Chalily. Great, friendly customer service and the prices were better on the fish and plants. I will never step foot in Aqua World again. read more

This is the best spot for aquarists in St. Louis hands down. I have not bought fish food, fish, plants, or equipment from a chain store since I discovered this small mom and pop gem a few years ago. Their tanks are all separate so you don't risk buying a diseased fish that comes from a tank system where all the water is connected like the chain stores. Tanks are always clean and you won't see random dead fish in the tanks like other places, you can tell they take of their fish. They will test your water for free and more importantly will give you the actual diagnosis of how to improve conditions vs. just giving you random costly chemicals. They also have the best fish variety, tons of live plants, and they know what they are doing and which fish co-habitat well. Mike the fish guy is the best and so is Stephanie, they are the fish whisperers and I recommend asking for them! read more

Aqua World in Ellisville has been phenomenal is helping me get started with my aquarium. Stephanie has had a pivotal role in helping me with the care of my newly established (in 2014) tank and ongoing care since. Mike has been incredibly helpful with setting up a system for a new to me 75 gallon set-up. He took a lot of time explaining, then mapping it out and best of all, actually setting the filter up for me in the store. I drove to the Ellisville store because the South St. Louis store had a fish I wanted in quarantine. I needed 5 otocinclus/botia loaches. I called ahead, and they had otos available. After the 30 minute drive, I was stunned to see the same business with the same fish wanted 50% more per fish ($15 vs $10). I looked at some other critters I was interested in, one being red crystal shrimp, and they, too, were almost twice the price. Not sure what makes fish more expensive in Ellisville, but I won't be going there again. Save your money, shop at the St. Louis store -- same fish, a lot cheaper. read more
