Chuck has a wealth of knowledge about everything in the store and is kind enough to share it with kids starting their first aquarium or fellow enthusiasts. This place is amazing! They have such a variety of tropical fish in beautiful/clean tanks. Don't buy from the big box pet stores! Do yourself a favor and go to Tropical World Pets. I live on the Illinois side and will drive the extra miles to get quality fish. They also offer tanks, equipment, and decor. If you aren't into fish, they also offer a variety of reptiles. The fish prices are horrible for starters a half moon beta here is 20 dollars vs petland (simular to petco/petsmart) keep their betas in the same conditions as TWP are half the price at 10 dollars. 2nd fish like neon tetras wich I have seen at many other fish shops labled for 1.99 (petco, petsmart, petland, gateway aquatics, and aqua world) they are charging 5.99 per fish (everyfish is like this from the smallest schooling fish to the biggest display fish). Yet I have not gotten a sick fish from them niether have I from petco or petsmart. I highly do not recommend shopping at TWP at all no fish shop should get away with price gouging to the extent of 5 times the original price. read more

They only one that I lost I'm positive one of my older fish ate her because she just disappeared. That's not on the store. They had a Great selection the fish that are super hard to find. The only reason they got 4 out of 5 is that they used to have some really bad help. Bad enough for me to not go for multiple years. My niece is a fish fanatic so I took her here to pick out a betta for her collection. They have a few reptiles but mainly freshwater fish. My niece is very knowledgeable about fish so she enjoyed showing my wife and I the different species. She was particularly impressed with how much vegetation they were selling, which people add to the tanks to give the fish a little bit more realistic home. We had to get a little help with some questions and they employee that helped us was really nice and had an answer for all of our questions. Was very impressed with that and just walking around in the store was a lot of fun for my niece. Highly recommend for freshwater fish enthusiasts. read more

I went to this pet store and purchased a few fish. Once I got home and added the fish to the tank one appeared to have a white patches over its body and head, which to me looked like fungus. I called the next morning because they were already closed for the night. When I called the next morning I talked to a man and he basically told me that it was my aquarium water even though they hadn't tested my water. When i got off work that evening I was able to get the fish and take it back over to them since they did offer me to bring it back. When i got there, I dealt with Zach, he told me that he saw what I was talking about and that the fish was fine and once again it must be my water. I had him test my water and he said that my ammonia was super high but I had just had my water test a hour before at a different store and they told me it was all good and only thing off was my ph and it was just a little and nothing to worry about. I feel that was just a way to deflect the situation of the sickly looking fish. I wasn't comfortable taking this fish back home and asked him if he could swap it out but low and behold he didn't give me a receipt when I bought $35 worth the fish the day before. I described the man that sold the fish to me and took my money and Zach said it sounded like chuck the owner. This place is a joke and I'll never be back considering there are many more honest fish shops in the area. read more

I have been coming to this place since I was 2 years old. They have a great selection of fresh and salt water fish and plants. Look for a reptile of some kind, this is the place! They always have a wall full of Breaded Dragons, Spotted Geckos, Tarantulas and who knows what else! When I was little they always had lots of smaller mammals - like hamsters and rabbits, things like that...but it seems like they are focuses more on fish and lizards. Prices on the pets are good, but if you need a tank and filter system you might want to head to a bigger chain. I hate to say that, but I was trying to get a new Eclipse System and I just couldn't let myself spend that much more for it :( read more

Let me first say they have a great selection of freshwater fish and seem very knowledgable. But if I could give customer service 0 stars I would. Walked in there and needed to buy some fish for our new aquarium. My boyfriend and I really have no idea what we are doing but our friend who has 7 fish tanks established our tank and said it was fine to go get more fish after establishing the tank for us. The aquarium was established already, had some fish in it but we needed some plecos. When we first walked in the store, there were no workers out front for a solid 5 minutes. The first guy we asked to help us was nice enough but kept leaving us and saying come find me if you have more questions after a single question. So another guy starts helping us. We tell him we are new to this and he helped us pick out 3 plecos. Then he asked us how long we have had our tank. We say a couple weeks and asks us if we tested the water. We said yes we tested it ourselves and everything is fineHe said "you cant get fish today and you need to check your water in the store" He said "you can buy them but they will die." At this point I said we will take our chances and buy them today since gas to drive there costs more than the fish. Then the guy gets really pissed off. As I was looking around the store, he said to my boyfriend in a pissy tone "you will see they will die and we won't guarantee them." Ok buddy, I can take my 20 bucks to the local Petco and get better customer service than I received here. UPDATE: The fishes did survive since we tested the water beforehand. read more

Most people are very friendly and will talk with you at length about whatever pet you want to talk about. I have bought all of my tanks/terrariums from them. I love popping in here once in a while. Great selection and quality on tropical fish, cichlids, reptiles/amphibians, freshwater plants, etc. If it's in an aquarium, it's for sale. I bought a rather nice piece of Java Moss covered driftwood that went perfectly in the natural planted aquarium I set up in my daughter's room. Their supplies are a bit on the pricey side, but their livestock prices are about industry average. My only minor gripe is their marine fish and invert selection. It's rather non-existent, and that's alright. I'd rather they take care of their small stock with enthusiasm than be in over their heads, as it's clear there are no reef/saltwater experts working here, just an average working knowledge of that side of the hobby. read more

Went in for cichlids and a "sucker fish". A guy refused to help get the fish we wanted and said he will not put his hands in the tank which may I remind you had written pricing for the fish in the tank clearly for sale. He went and got a lady who was really fast and got them and is the only reason I'm rating so high cause that guy truly ruined my first time experience shopping. She was friendly and made up for his ignorance. We went to the baby suckers next and at the end before bagging them I asked if they'll be okay with the cichlids we purchased and she said yes and that they have plenty of places to hide if needed and I woke up with morning to dead "sucker fish" that my fish turned into a corpse. Completely livid. spent almost 200 with you all and I really should have brought my business else where. I knew I should have turned around and walked out after the guy but I figured I'd give another chance since the lady was taking his lack and was actually great.When people ask me about this business I'll flat out look them in the eyes and say no like your employee did us. Completely ignorant man you have working the front id reevaluate his customer service skills. Severely lack and I can tell he hates his job. The lady though, she'll take your business places. I've been going here because of the nice selection and variety of fish food. But I needed to buy some plecostamus algae eaters. I bought three, one died before I got home. I took it back, they gave me a replacement. The salesman mentioned that they've had a bad outbreak of ick with their plecos and most were in quarantine. Well, a few days after having bought the plecos that were for sale, the other fish in my tank at home were infected. I'll stick with their food, but no more buying their fish. Prices are pretty premium for the quality, too. read more

The best selection of fish anywhere around. The prices are a little higher than what you'd find at a Petsmart or Petco, but the selection and health of the fish is SO much better. I have also purchased a tank setup here and the pricing was very fair. They have some awesome display tanks and my daughter loved the Nemo and Dory tank they had set up. I only wish they had more pond fish and supplies, but like the name says....they specialize in tropical pets. Let me start by commenting about why I like TWP. They have a GREAT selection, a ton of fish, and they're generally very helpful. It's such a great store that my girlfriend and I (we both keep fish) drive 45 minutes over the river to get there. We've bought some Bichirs and Loaches and Catfish from there, because they have the guts to carry oddballs. Albeit they're usually a bit more expensive, it's generally not by much. BUT, today I went in and asked about getting some monster fish for my newly set up 125 gallon tank. The guy laughed about it and called it "just a little tank." I'm a college student, and I've been saving up for MONTHS to get that tank. It was a pretty big accomplishment for me. I live in a small house, and that's the biggest tank my house can have. So then I asked him why they were charging $80.00 for a juvenile Silver Arowana, and if he could give me a price break. He informed me that they're worth 80.00, and if I can find a better price somewhere else, they still won't drop the price, and to go there. All in all, great place, great fish. I would still recommend this place to anyone looking for some neat fish. I, however, will not be returning. Your dopey-goatee employee just lost you two loyal customers today.
