Let me start by saying that Apsara Palace is one of the only Vietnamese/ Cambodian/ Thai/ Chinese food restaurants on the East Side that I trust in terms of cleanliness. While their food is pretty good most of the time, I simply cannot ignore the rudeness of their staff some days. Take today, for instance. I called to order a lunch special with chicken and mixed vegetables in oyster sauce with Nime Chow. I followed that with the shorthand number/letter combination associated with it I saw on the menu (L5, for example). Fast forward 20 min, I drive down, pick up my food, and drive back to work. I open my food, and had something completely different from what I ordered. I called and explained that I had ordered one thing and received another, and was told that the mistake was on my end because I had an outdated menu. (I feel as though the hostess should have listened when I described the meal I wanted, but whatever; I'll take responsibility for the first mishap). The lady on the phone tells me that on the old menu, what I wanted was "L5," and on the new one it's "L6." I start to tell the woman on the phone- the same lady I spoke to the first time- that I would like to place another order for the lunch special chicken with mixed vegetables in oyster sauce, but she interrupts me, saying, "Yeah, I got it. I wrote down the order so it doesn't get messed up. The 'L6.' I'll try to rush it for you. Give it 15 minutes." I hang up the phone and look online at the CURRENT MENU to double check that I will have the right order (I'm at work, and I only get a 30 minute break). Lo and behold, the woman on the phone was wrong about the number/letter combination and had put in an order for the wrong food again! I called back a third time and explained that I just wanted to ensure that an order was placed for chicken, and the same woman on the phone interrupted me again with, "yeah, I put in the order for the beef with mixed vegetables." No. I stressed that I had asked for the chicken, and she huffed into the receiver and said, "now I have to cancel that order," as if I'd done her the disservice. At this point, I'm fit to be tied, because I'm hungry and my break is over. I drive back down to the restaurant and pay with a $20 bill. The woman at the counter asks if I have exact change, because they literally have no coins in the till and barely any cash to make change out of. Luckily, I had some. I get my food and go to my car, praying that they gave me chicken so I don't have to go make a scene. (They did, thank God). BUT they gave me an egg roll instead of the Nime Chow that was supposed to come with my order! I don't really eat beef or pork, which is why the whole ordeal was so annoying to me. I considered going back inside to ask for the Nime Chow, but after the horrible experience I had today, I figured I'd just forget it and go back to work. No food is worth that kind of hassle. I'll be taking an Apsara palace hiatus.
P.S. The eggroll tasted like plastic. read more
