We have been long time customers of the Apropos. It was always a 5/5 and an amazing experience with all the staff, food and ambiance. Don't know what happened in the last month that we hadnt been there, but last night was heartbreaking. We arrived around 6:40 for our reservation and by 7:30 we had to leave. 50 minutes with no drink and no server, and all we had asked for was a bottle of wine. One busser came at some point and said they are too busy. Did not recognize most if not all of the staff, was told that many were let go. Entire menu changed and we were all given different versions of it. Multiple other parties sat waiting over an hour for a cocktail, and with no music we could all hear every single party pondering on leaving and going elsewhere. Hope that this place can get themselves together again because as of now we and our friends and family will not be returning. read more

Absolutely stunning setting. The view and Abbey grounds are gorgeous!! We were pleasantly mind blown when we saw the adorable garden they have for outdoor seating, and it made for a beautiful evening. Staff was wonderful and attentive, especially Jhonny. One of the best servers I think we've ever had, the world over. The menu itself is one of the most inventive and ambitious in the area. Loved the marrow with escargots, and the crispy polenta is a must-try as far as sides. Everything was cooked to perfection. The only thing lacking were the cocktails, which did not match the quality of the food and setting. Overall, a beautiful place for a special evening out. read more

The service here is impeccable! If you want the royal treatment, it's the place to go! And, of course, you can't beat the beautiful views of the Hudson! They did a fantastic job renovating this place and turning it into a high-end hotel, restaurant, and spa. What a wonderful and delicious meal with had this weekend at Apropos Restaurant in gorgeous Abbey Inn and Spa in Peekskill . Overlooking sweeping views of the River, and with gorgeous ambience inside , this new addition to Hudson Valley dining was a luxurious and delightful experience in every way . And the big exciting news is that Chef Peter Kelly is not leading this restaurant and his menus , preparations and standards of service are exquisite . I enjoyed Murray's chicken with the most yummy mushroom bread pudding ; Bonnie has tuna tartare .. preceded by fresh and special salad and then Peter's famous creme brûlée for desert . Not the best time to visit during restaurant week but having said that I expected much more than what I had. The service was impeccable and the mushroom risotto excellent. However my main course chicken was disappointing. It was simply flavorless and did not make the grade. The couscous was flavorful but the carrots a bit underdone. For dessert my husband and I both had the crème brûlée and his was firm and mine on the other hand was runny and watery. I guess it just wasn't my night! The ambience was superb loved it! I was looking forward to enjoying a amazing meal for my birthday. I have to disclose due to Covid the entire seating outlay had to be changed . I was given a table it what really was a corridor. The outdoor seating next to the fountain may have been better but was too cold . The service was slow . I understand since the waiter had a much longer trek from bar/kitchen to table . The Meal didn't really make up for the lack of ambience . The portions were anemic and the cocktails too overpriced . The only memorable dish was the fig appetizer. Food was excellent, restaurant is located on a beautiful hilltop and the portions are excellently sized. Unfortunately, the waiter assigned to my table was not as excellent. He immediately made sexist comments about someone at my table. However, I assumed that there may have been a language/cultural barrier (the waiter was Western European, and saw parallels to comments my own family made, not meaning badly). Unfortunately, about halfway through the dinner the waiter's comments crossed a line. He made some casually racist comments and expressed his appreciation for the fact that the area of the restaurant had less racial diversity than the city, going so far as to elaborate that it was "nice" that he never seems to see African-American people in the area, whom he referred to by a different name. Rarely am I motivated to write a review of a restaurant but we enjoyed our dinner at Apropos so much that I just feel compelled to share. The 3 course menu at $45.oo is a such a great deal. We went on a Thursday night and loved everything we had! The butternut soup was perfect, as was the pasta with mushrooms, roasted cod, and the warm chocolate cake. Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. The property is beautiful with great views overlooking the Hudson River. We were seated in a section facing large windows maximizing the amazing view - I would definitely request to be seated here again. Everything we ordered was delicious. We went out for HV restaurant week. It was a good choice. There was a great list of fall cocktails and the menu tho small varied. Farm to table is the way to go. Delicious first courses of fall inspired soup, salad, and the pork chop entree was fresh and perfectly cooked. A beautiful view of the Hudson at night as special as the day. My wife and I chose this place for our ten year wedding anniversary dinner. We had heard good things. The food was good, but the restaurant did a great job making this memorable. Our order was wrong. The server basically forgot about us and left us to our own devices. My wife ordered a second drink and he came back every 20 minutes or so and forgot each time. We finally got the drink because the hostess happened to walk by. We then got the dessert menu, and waited for half an hour for a waiter to come and then when they showed up we had to leave to relieve our sitter. We were there for over two hours and we didn't even get to dessert, because the service was so terrible. For how expensive the prices were, this was extremely disappointing to say the least. We were hoping for a memorable nice evening and I'd like to thank this overpriced restaurant for providing us with a memory at the very least. I don't usually do this, but I went to the hostess to complain, because it was our anniversary and they had even mentioned that because I made a note in our reservation. She said "I'll make a note here for next time." Nice atmosphere. But that's the only good thing I can say about it. My friend took me and my lady there on Saturday night. The portions were miniscule! The prices were very high. My friend ordered branzino. Instead of getting whole fish, he got a little sliver of a baby branzino - maybe an eighth of a pound. Next to it was what looked like frozen carrots and peas. I ordered duck. Instead of half a duck, all I got were 2 slices on a plate with nothing else. No veggie or potato. My tuna appetizer was about one tablespoon worth! At the end of the meal, we told the waiter we were still starving. He knowingly giggled. The only way to walk out of there without going home and making a sandwich is to fill up on the rolls and butter. We ordered about 5 refills. And they are not bashful with the prices. I'll start by saying that this restaurant is in an incredible setting, a converted abbey on a hill, with stunning Hudson River views. It's a part of the Abbey Inn and Spa. I'll add that I think we are living through unprecedented times when it's difficult for businesses to find staff, so I'm going to cut the restaurant some slack. I loved the fact that we had to show proof of vaccination status to eat there, and that every single member of their staff wore a mask. It made me and my husband feel safe on the Tuesday evening we ate there. The restaurant pays homage to their local Farms and Farmers on their menu, which, although somewhat limited does offer both vegan and gluten free options. I was therefore surprised to see that their "Sides" portion of the menu offered only 3 vegetable options and 2 of those were potato related. The carrot side dish came with "citrus breadcrumbs" which wasn't something I was interested in. I should explain at this point that my husband and I eat very differently. I'm not vegetarian but I like my plate of food to have more vegetables than meat, fish or poultry. My husband loves steak, but steak without added sauce or embellishment. Unfortunately this restaurant wasn't a good choice for us as there were limited vegetable options for me and the 2 steak dishes on the menu that night both came embellished with glaze or cream. Okay let's cut to the chase.... to start I ordered the Caesar Salad, hubby ordered the Sliced Porchetta which he really enjoyed. The Caesar Salad came with "Ortiz Anchovy" which I had never heard if, and wouldn't have ordered if I had been familiar with it, and generally I'm one of the few people who actually like Anchovy. I'll leave it at that. For our main course hubby ordered the Grilled Pork Chop which came with a Noodle Gratin. He thoroughly enjoyed this course. I ordered the Roasted Chicken, which again wasn't what I expected. (Hubby tried it and liked it - so I'm the problem here!). It was described as "Roasted Chicken Black Truffle, Greens, Crispy Pastry". I assumed the chicken would be wrapped in pastry. It wasn't. There was a tiny little piece of cooked pastry cringing on a plate that contained I think 5 or 6 rolls of chicken, sitting on the greens. It was too much chicken and not enough greens for this picky eater, but probably would make most people very happy. As I said, hubby liked it! I ate the greens and 1 roll. I was not feeling full so we ordered desert. Hubby had the "Abbey Chocolate Cake" which he thought was "good", not spectacular. He did like the Marshmallow frosting and the candle they put on top for his birthday, and the fact that they didn't charge us for it. I ordered the "Sticky Date Pudding" which didn't disappoint and was the highlight of the meal for me. I ordered a decaf Cappuccino (extra hot) which they delivered as ordered. Hubby had an American coffee that he enjoyed. Our waiter was delightful, the ambiance was lovely- quite romantic and the service was excellent except for the fact that they seemed reluctant to give us silverware! At one point I actually got up from the table to go request an implement to eat my desert with and they forget to give us spoons for our coffee. It is what it is. I would probably come back to this restaurant in the summer to eat outside, but otherwise I don't know that I would return. read more

I've been to this restaurant twice. The first time, we sat for 2 solid hours without being served in the main dining room. Our orders were taken, and after the first hour, I asked to speak to the manager, who offered us a bottle of wine, but had no explanation as to the lack of service. We eventually left without ever being served. The second, and last time, the service was adequate, as was the food, but the prices are for a top notch restaurant, and this is not one. When leaving @ 8:30 pm, the valet service had already left for the night and we had to find someone in the hotel to help get our car keys, and move a vehicle that was blocking our exit. Apropos is a really beautiful restaurant overlooking the water up in Peekskill. The restaurant decor is super simple and slightly rustic, yet upscale. The citrus and couscous salad is a must, and the old bay fries are as well. For brunch I had the vegetable panini which was good, but I do wish their menu had a larger selection. Of course I have to point out that the prices here are basically Manhattan prices with many of their seafood and meat dinner entrees at $50+. However, for a special occasion meal in Peekskill I do think it's worth it and would return. read more

The staff is friendly but not comfortable at being the level of confident one would expect at a restaurant with such price points. I was very disappointed. Staying at the inn and wanted to try the in-house restaurant. The decor is very corporate and uninviting. We waited for a minute or more at the door without anyone greeting us. We walked around the restaurant looking for a host or manager until a server asked what we needed. There were no place settings at the table, which always feels like a statement of the guest as unanticipated. Our server did not offer any menu descriptions at all, and when she opened the wine she left the entire metal rim on the bottle. After she took our order she came back less then 10 minutes later and asked us if we were ready to order. We looked at her with confusion at which point she said, "Oh, I think I got your order, right? Let me make sure that it's in." No bread service, which is surprising for a "farm-to-table" restaurant. Bread service is cheap and easy to do and has the impact of beginning the meal with thought. Not surprising however as there had already been three moments of the guest being forgotten. Halfway through our meal we heard the table next to us, with a different server, receiving very elaborate meal descriptions that sounded enticing. I was surprised and disappointed that there wasn't a consistency of service. That server should be managing and ensuring that kind of experience for all the guests. The oysters were served without classic accompaniment. The kale salad was fine. Excellent steak, mediocre fries, and nice broccoli rabe. Our server told us the desserts and noted that the "very popular olive oil cake" was sold out. Why upsell and boast to a guest about an item that doesn't exist? When the check had been dropped we wanted to add it to the room but no one returned to our table for over 15 minutes. We finally had to flag someone down. Was hoping for a special, romantic evening but ended up a mediocre, expensive night instead. read more

Was excited to go back to Apropos with Peter Kelly as the new chef. Boy, was I disappointed. Service was miserable. While our waiter kept asking us if we were ready to order (immediately after we sat down), when we were ready he was hard to find. We gave him our drink order. We asked for bread, and he said it would be right out. Twenty minutes later I asked him again for bread. When the bread finally arrived, it was laughable. It was clearly rolls cut in half to appear to be more (friends of ours at another table received whole rolls). There were a total of 4 tiny pieces of bread - it was good, but not nearly enough. We asked for more and received the same 2 rolls cut in half. I had the mini duck tacos as an app - some shredded duck, a few slices of scallion and hoisin sauce on a crumbly taco...pretty boring. My husband had a glass of rose, and when he wanted a second glass the waiter said they were out of it. Really? Who does their ordering? My main dish, which was the eggplant, was bland and a very small portion. For dessert I ordered creme brulee. The menu said it came with strawberries - there was one (1) strawberry cut in half - white on the inside, tasteless. While the setting for this restaurant is totally glorious, the food and service are very disappointing. The fact that Michelin has "recommended" this restaurant makes me doubt their judgement. Don't think I'll be going there again any time soon. What a shame. read more

As long-time fans of the restaurants of Peter X. Kelly, we booked brunch at this restaurant for Father's Day with great anticipation, only to be sorely disappointed. Though there appeared to be a full crew of servers, service was extremely slow and food did not arrive for more than an hour after we were served. When the food DID come, it was completely unremarkable: "I could have gone to Denny's and gotten a better meal," my wife remarked. Given the price of the food, the service was very bare bones: no basket of breakfast breads for the table, no butter for the biscuit served w/one of the meals, no salt-and-pepper for the table. The restaurant itself is lovely, but given the prices and the reputation of the owner, one expects something much less generic than what we were offered. read more

We dined last night to celebrate our fifty third wedding anniversary. The experience was beyond amazing. The food was excellent. Each dish was gourmet and very delicious. The wait staff was attentive and very polite. Our waiter, Fehrat, made the evening delightful. He was the most pleasant, accommodating and friendly waiter that we have had the pleasure to meet. It was a five star plus experience. The views of the river at sunset with eagles soaring overhead were spectacular. read more

My wife had the chicken, different and delicious, my medium rare burger was perfect. We started with a calamari salad which again was a great interpretation and so different from the usual glutinous mess, excellent. The well curated wine list supported the offerings from the kitchen, with an in depth selection of NY state wines but old world wines were also well represented. Many excellent wines were in the $ 50 and less category, we picked a white from Sicily which was excellent and would be hard to find in your local liquor store. We will be back! read more

Abominable food: I had ordered halibut and requested no starch but greens under halibut. Came an overcooked fish on rice. Sent it back reminding waiter of original request. Plates comes back with a spoonful of green sauce, no accompaniments at all and still the overcooked fish which by now is tepid and dry. Asked the waiter to put some green (not a spoonful of sauce) but i am only offered a side dish for an additional cost, i refuse (out of disgust not for the xtra cost). My friend had been waiting since we sat down for a glass of wine to accompany his 5 miserable scallops, swimming in huge pieces of bacons oozing fat... and a non cooked minced cabbage leaf (we are still waiting for the wine which never appeared...). We skipped dessert. Wanting to share our experience with the manager, my friend was asked to wait 20 minutes to, at the end, never meet the manager as he was busy with an event or maybe still fighting to open the bottle of wine...) in any case absent. The place is not understaffed as their were 5 waiters for the more or less 10 occupied tables, but the kitchen clearly needs a better chef and team and the restaurant management ...well i couldn t say as we never saw his traces... Who needs such aggravations on a Saturday night. This restaurant wants to cater to high end patrons but clearly doesn t have the mean to. A pity because it is full of potential. We ate indoors and felt completely safe and secluded. Our waiter was a really nice guy and gave us tips about local things to do and see as we were visiting for the day / night. My husband's Bloody Mary was unique and awesome - highly recommend. It's not one that's traditional and filled with horseradish- it seems like their own mix. Our food was incredible! I got the Eggs El Forno and I feel that I may dream about it -lol. My husbands burger was cooked perfectly and really enjoyed the mozzarella cheese verses traditional cheese. CONS - They had an attitude with us literally as soon as we walked in- not sure if it was because we were not white... and it was a race issue, or if it was an attitude because we had young kids with us. - Few guests from our party headed to the bar from the table at 5:55PM- which I admit is late for happy hour ending at 6... but the staff were purposely avoiding us and we just kept waiting to be serviced... When they spoke to us finally it was 5:58 they said they couldn't service us because happy hour ends at 6... well, it's not 6 yet... but okay! - we put in our dinner order late I admit, but it took awhile to get the kids settled... it took an hour to get the food served, which is fine... but when we kindly asked on status on the order so we could decide on kids sleeping schedule- they just were immediately defensive, kind and unhelpful. - the managers demeanor was defensive the whole time. He has no sense customer service- instead of being apologetic and seeing how he can help the customer, he was just complaining about us as guests? This guy needed training in customer service and hospitality. - he at the end was excusing us of wanting a discount or wanting our meals comped? It is so insulting--- this made me again think he was discriminating toward us because we were not white. The food is a little on the expensive side, and sides are an additional charge. However, we were staying here for our anniversary and wanted to splurge on ourselves. We are so glad we did! The setting is gorgeous and the waiter was great. The menu lists 12 choices for dinner. That list included 2 salads , grilled peaches and grilled octopus- steak for $56 and sea bass for $36. . We had the sea bass. Mine was a small fillet which came with 3 small pieces of broccoli raab and a grilled lemon. The fish was fine, just grilled- no sauce. We weren't even brought bread. And the cocktail came in a small cocktail glass that was half full. I went home hungry. And I'm not a big eater. This may be a better place for brunch. As mentioned, its a lovely spot. read more

Cockroach city. It's so beautiful and the atmosphere is gorgeous but they need an exterminator inside and out. The food is sub par for the price. I couldn't eat the food I ordered because I saw the roach before receiving it. When we made our way to the car we saw roaches crawling all over it. I had my car detailed the following day inside and out. It turned out to be super pricey meal that I didn't even eat for all of my expenses. The staff was very pleasant.
