After many years of dining here, I won't be going back. My wife and I visited on a weekend afternoon and were seated promptly. The restaurant wasn't overly busy. Our waitress gave us menus and returned shortly to take our order. About five minutes later, my wife received her iced tea, but it took another 10 minutes before I got my beer. Then we both waited at least 15 more minutes for our simple Caesar salads. After finishing our salads, we waited and waited for our main courses. When they finally arrived, the fries looked like they had been cooked in old oil, and they didn't taste good. My wife's chicken tenders were okay but likely fried in the same old oil. My "half" rack of ribs looked more like a quarter rack, and when I took a bite, they were cold--not even lukewarm. I couldn't eat them. I told the waitress, and she offered to bring me a new order, but after waiting so long only to receive disappointing food, I wasn't willing to wait even longer for what might be another letdown. They did take most of the cost of the ribs off the check, and I still tipped 20% because I didn't believe the issues were her fault. It's a shame. I'm only giving 2 stars because the hostess and waitress were decent. The food was sub-par even by Applebees standards. I ordered the Chicken fajita wrap. What I got was a wrap that had maybe 2-3 tablespoons of chicken diced in 1/4 inch squares and a ton of lettuce with some cheese. It had diced tomato, not pico de gallo as advertised. It was epically bad. And not worth $14. When I pointed out to the waitress there was nothing resembling "fajita" chicken in this wrap, she said they use fajita chicken in it, and yes, they (finely) dice it. But she could ask if the kitchen could send out more chicken. I wasn't up to the assembly of my dish... and feel they should be embarrassed to serve anything like this. I swore years ago I'd never be back because of the food issues. I should have listened. Ive been here a few times throughout the year for drinks. The sign stating, if your server doesn't inform you about the featured drinks it's free is bs. They never comp the drink even after you have to inquire. Last night, we were served partially raw pretzels. We ate them anyway. Ordered a kids chicken Alfredo. No chicken, didn't bother to complain. Ordered a plain cheese quesadilla with nothing on it. Sent a chicken quesadilla. It was returned. 20+ minutes later out comes the new quesadilla. Exact same thing. The waitress offered again but we declined. She appeared to have gotten yelled at by the kitchen staff. Boneless wings were soaked in oil. Half the order was taken home to finish. Dunked into their ranch dressing and out comes a 2" black hair. Ordered through DoorDash, ribs were dried out and completely inedible, no fries, the chips with the spinach/artichoke dip were stale, mostly broken and there was an old French fry and what looked like another patrons discarded chicken in the chips. So lets see where do I start. O.K lets start with the store manager Brain. Brain, the worst manger I ever see in my life. He cares more about getting in the pants of all the waitresses then he care about the main functions of the Kitchen. What store manger doesn't know how to set a proper work schedule. Basically if he knows your parents and are good friends with your parents you will get over 35 hrs. a week. Never mind the fact that the ones he giving all the hours to call out on a weekly bases. I never seen a store manger run his store so poorly. He also too busy trying to rub in the face of the past store manger. That he has his job now and thinks its funny and has to let everyone know this. No profession ion at all. Secondly he doesn't make sure kitchen staff wears gloves when touching raw food. I have seen with my own eyes mid cooks grab raw shrimp with their bare hands and place on the the grill top. Then grab raw hamburger, buns etc. without washing their hands. I've seen cooks go outside to smoke cigarette's and come back in and not even wash their hands. There are eleven cooks, only five of them are clean and wear gloves. The dishwasher walks up to the fry holder and sticks his hands in the fries and nipple of some fries with no gloves on, even the waiters do the same. If I was to bring my family to Applebee's I would have to know what cooks are working and what station they are working. We used to go often and liked the food. This was when they had Siracha shrimp and Bourbon Street Steaks. And we liked it. Upon returning, I ordered something that was different and the menu stated it came with coleslaw. When I did get my food there was no coleslaw. So, I nicely asked the waitress to bring some. Next thing I know the cook came out and said it did not come with coleslaw and proceeded to argue. So, I asked him if he wanted me to show him where it states that on the menu and he said no. A bit of a disappointment. My wife and daughter took me here as a treat, and we arrived and were seated. Our waiter who I believe was Nicole came took I drink order, and came back for our food order. It didn't take long for the food which was great. All was well, but then my daughter noticed that our server never came back to check on us not once after yet she had plenty time to serve her other customers. She never even asked us how our food was or did we need anything. She walked past our table many times. My wife also noticed that she gave no eye contact at all. So then when she finally came to give us our check my daughter asked If she could see the manager. Now mind you we were always polite never rude at any time. So my daughter asked the manager who I think was Shawn, and explained what happened and she wondered what the problem was since we had no idea, was she racist he said no and said he would talk to her. It seemed like he was defending her like Oh she has lots of customer's etc, and offered us a free desert. By this time we didn't want anything or to stay there so we paid and left, and for a first left no tip. How Is this customer service and you don't treat everyone fairly. I have to say last few times I went has been less than favorable. To start my guy ordered one of their $1.00 drinks and he could not drink it, it was disgustingly sweet and just overall gross. Our appetizer was cold and not very appetizing. Dinner for me was okay I got the less calories chicken dish. My boyfriend got a dish but it was again cold. Well , I had taken a hiatus from this restaurant, but went last night mostly because of convenience and my grandson loves the kids pizza. It was busier than it's been on recent visits so that was a good sign. Upon entering I saw that the former manager, Mark, was back. We have been coming to Applebee's since it opened, its one of our favorites here in town. Anything we order has been good and prices are reasonable- with the exception of the sirloin steaks- always cooked to perfection but had to send two back because they were mostly nerve. Me and my father got sat down at a table around 9:07, we waited 30 minutes just for a waitress to come take our order(it wasn't even busy either). I finally found a waitress and told her how long we've been waiting. 4 minutes later our waitress comes and says "I'm sorry I was behind the bar and didn't notice you". A few minutes after we got our appetizer she comes up with 2 plates and asks us how it was, we tell her it was alright and set the plate to the side thinking we were getting our food, she walks away and gives the food to the table next to us. 20 minutes go by and our food finally came. My plate was cold and it was pretty bland as well, there wasn't any flavor in my steak or potatoes, the broccoli was very hard and dry as well. My fathers food was the same (we didn't have the same meal but his food was bland and warm). Horrible. 2pm in the afternoon and they couldn't get the food for a very long time. One dish came out cold and 2 dishes out of 8 came after every one else was done. Let me explain the 2 star rating. We ordered the 2 for $25.00 meal not impressed by it whatsoever and I couldn't enjoy mine. I asked the waitress if the ribs were spicy she said No, I have a medical condition that I cannot eat anything spicy or has seeds. So I went ahead and ordered it, my man is a big man ordered the shrimp and chicken, now on the menu it looks hell of a lot bigger. Instead you get overcooked chicken that's drier than the Sahara desert and so many sautéed onions you could feed shreks family. Eating out in Torrington, I find, is a struggle. Especially when it's after eight, your options are limited. If you're looking for an experience with good food, good service, and a reasonable in and out, this is probably not the place for you. I take no issue with the hygiene of the location, although I didn't go into the bathrooms. The food was fine, but really just standard Applebee's fare. The chicken was a bit rubbery, but perfectly edible. The food is what it is. I suppose my ultimate issue is the service. I was there on a Tuesday night, which is apparently trivia night, which is fine if that's your purpose. The restaurant seems to be more than happy to let you sit there and drink (preferably from the bar), submitting trivia answers at a rate of one every three minutes. People seemed like they were having a lot of fun, and again, if that's your objective, then that's awesome and I'm sure you'll have fun. Not so much if you're there because you actually want dinner. We ordered from the two for twenty, which I'm sure makes servers grimace inside calculating tips, and a water and coffee for beverages. We were about midway through our appetizer when our entrees arrived, and were pushed directly in front of us. Convenient in a way, but impractical if we wanted to, you know, finish the appetizer. Once we were finished dinner we elected to have dessert, even though our waiter seemed resolute in his ability to ignore our table. I get it, the table of people in their twenties ordering drinks are more fun and bigger bill. But come on, did it really have to take twenty minutes after we told you we wanted a dessert AND another server overhearing me say, "Why doesn't this stupid machine call the server" for you to come back? I lost track of how many times the server walked past out table to go check on someone else, and in the meantime, it does get a bit annoying having your dirty plates just kind of sitting there. I swear, I am not that person who expects everything done perfectly, everything done immediately, and I don't mind waiting. I do mind being ignored, and my suspicion (as I've stated above) is that other tables are more lucrative. But maybe Applebee's dramatically under-staffs for what they actually need on Tuesday. I don't know, which is why I'm not calling any person out by name. My take away from the experience is there are other places to go where it doesn't take over 90 minutes to get in and out. The food at this Applebee's consistently rates between mediocre and disappointing. I've never, ever received good service there. On one occasion after the wrong items, late items, raw meat, and wrong beers I asked to see the Manager. After coming by 5 minutes later, even SHE was rude to me. My friend and I have taken to calling calling it Wait-lebee's, as in "Do you want to go to Wait-lebee's and wait?" followed by uproarious laughter because of course we don't want to go there. This is a decent Applebees, I agree with the previous review. The staff is friendly, the food is alright and you can generally get in and out without much hassle. The pick-up service isn't a bad touch either, and though they tend to run a bit later than they'll confirm, they're pretty good about getting your food out on time. I usually get the chicken fajitas, which seem to be the saving grace of any greasy chain restaurant. Their burgers are alright (go to the Cambridge House for burgers!), but their meat dishes tend to be a bit overcooked and dry. Also, watch out for mixed drinks here. I can't attest to their specials, but they have quite possibly one of the worst Mojitos ever - just watery and no attention to procedure.
