Had my first girls night out in years, and we picked Applebee's because of their $1 signature drink of the month. Now, I've been to Applebee's numerous times when I lived down state, but this was by far the BEST experience I've had! Not only was the food great, but we didn't know we were going out on Homecoming weekend, but we didn't have a long wait to be seated, greeted, or food! I had not been to a Applebees in a long time, we went for lunch and it was pretty good, they have widened the menu and have more choices then they did a few years back. The waiter Nicholas was not so good however he thought everything was funny, like a dirty cup, that we needed refills. We came to Applebee's on a popular Friday night as part of a large group. The restaurant was very accommodating for so many people. There are quite a lot specials on a daily basis so we were very happy with our $50 bill with all that we ate and drank. We enjoyed the appetizer special 2 for $8.99. The chicken wonton tacos were my favorite. The pretzels and beer cheese was also really good. The nachos were our least favorite. You couldn't even pick up a chip because the toppings were so overloaded on the thin chip. The guys loved the brewtus beer which is the larger size of beers on tap. I very much enjoyed the Oberon which is a local wheat ale similar to Blue Moon. We split the All American burger for our entree which didn't come with tomato or lettuce, odd for "All American". The restaurant was clean as were the restrooms. Plenty of parking. A good bet for friends and family in need of budget dining. read more

The service was good, and the food was good, but to order a drink and watch the barmaid cough into her hand and then guide the ice into my glass is just uncalled for as well as put a lemon in my drink. Reluctant to eat at Applebee's in Alpena, but I was headed to the airport and stopped in for lunch. "Many would argue that it's the worst of the worst chain restaurants ever made." I agree, my ceasar salad had a clump of dressing in the middle and these rest of the old pieces were brown and even mushy. Our server Kayla K brought our food and was clueless we didn't have silverware. She never asked us for a drink refill.. We did mention we would have dessert, but our check was brought to us halfway through our meal...Kayla said its table check up...what? While I hadn't been to an Applebee's in years, my visit at this particular one was surprisingly good. The food was significantly better than I remember dishes being at Applebee's, especially the Cowboy Burger. The fries were a bit on the salty side with the seasoning, but not a dealbreaker. The other highlight for me was the superb service. Our waitress was excellent and attentive, bringing refills before the glasses were empty, and the rest of the staff seemed friendly and on-point. Our first visit was just awful--our server parroting some corporate spiel without regard for whether we were listening; we could just as easily have been crash test dummies. The spinach-artichoke "dip" was more of a soup. Mediocre entrees. Still, given the limited number of options, we returned. Wiser in our ordering, and a more experienced server. (Still dropped the checlk while my companion was finishing her entree. No reason for this; the room wasn't slammed.) Whatever you do do not get car side to go, they will screw up your order or you will be sitting waiting for much longer than told. If you are planning on eating in, there are really only 3 people on the wait staff who have good customer service and know what they are doing. Went for our anniversary and the waitress couldn't seem to get anything straight. Asked for a frozen margarita got a strawberry margarita. Asked for the riblets and shrimp special,was brought wings. Don't like to make a fuss but it's not rocket science and she wasn't busy. When I pointed out that she wasn't bringing what I ordered she got an attitude. My husband and I visited Applebee's Grill and Bar on Wednesday. The place was packed, they were having a special on burgers, coincidentally I was in the mood for a good burger. I ordered the Caprese Burger, it arrived after a short wait, just as described with grilled tomatoes, onion, mozzarella cheese and with fresh green spice leaves. The only reason I didn't get it a 5-star rating is because of their prices but like they are trying to help those who can't pay high prices and they are offering 2 eat for $20 and 2 for $25. Do not say we're hiring and have an experienced kitchen worker apply and have two interviews just to not get hired. That is not a good hiring practice and that was a waste of my time. The food was good, servers were friendly but what really impressed me was the helpfulness of the server Blair and her shift leader J. Roberts. We went to this branch because of the old local photos they used to have on the wall, including one of a high school track team from the 40s which had my stepdad's father and uncle in it. Upon arriving, we found out that they had remodeled and gotten rid of the pictures. Blair and J. Roberts helped us find out what happened to them and went back and forth to answer our questions. Ordered a baked chicken breast with two sides: steamed broccoli & a baked potato. Asked for no butter on any of the food. I was informed by my waitress that the broccoli is pre-bagged with butter inside, so I could only have a kids portion. I settled for grilled veggies. The food came out, and the chicken was decent for a chain restaurant. The five slices of red pepper and zucchini were rubbery at best. The baked potato...was black inside. when I brought this to Kathryn's attention, she said they couldn't make another - they were out and it would take an hour for another. She offered neither an apology nor a solution. I was then to pick another item...my third modification to my original order: steamed green beans, no seasoning. They were brought out promptly but ice cold. As in, not even heated. I asked to speak to the middle-aged manager, and he said they could "microwave the beans again", again no apology offered. I oriented him to the fact that the meal had been, at best, a complete wash and inquired about quality control. He said no one checks the food. Ultimately, it was a sub par meal. It is unfortunate that this is the only chain in the region....perhaps other competition would push this restaurant to be of higher caliber and standards - for food, staff, and customer service. read more

I have been to lots of Applebees over the years. I like Applebees. It just seemed like during my visit here that the excessive corporateness seemed to overshadow the good points. It was like our servers all were reading the corporate scripts trying to upsell at every contact. You could hear them repeating the same lines over and over at nearby tables. The funny thing is that I don't remember feeling this way during my past visits at other locations, so I am not sure if the employees at this location are different in some way, or if the corporation has adopted a new improved system of brainwashing. The food was good as usual. I thought that the current menu special features were not that interesting (to me anyway) and seemed to be a lot alike, so if one of them did not appeal to you, neither would the others. I suggest a little more variety on the special features, but the menu still offered plenty of good choices. read more
