If you're visiting Alpena, THIS IS THE PLACE YOU NEEDA VISIT. Downtown, cozy vibes, amazing service. What more could you ask for. Came in on a Monday night as we just pulled up into town after traveling for work and I needed Spanish Rice and carbs. After being seated the server gave us the menu and specials and the specials caught my eye as they had Fried Shrimp Tacos with a side of Spanish Rice. I didn't want to be too full so I thought it was going to be a good size. I was wrong their portions here are generous! 3 Tacos with 2 large shrimps inside and I couldn't finish the last one. ( I did take the shrimp and rice to go for a snack later) We also got guac and chips and it was nicely mashed, would def get again. Honestly will probably go before I leave the area. Hospitality and vibes were definitely there, you could see regulars come in and chatting it up with other diners and with the server. If you are craving Tex Mex and find yourself in Alpena, Michigan, this is where you go. Mango's had been around for a while now and each time we come, the place is full. It's a fairly loud restaurant but it goes with the mood. Family friendly with the ability to seat large parties. The team that works here are personable and happy to be at your service. Our server tonight was no different. We were seated promptly (we did make reservations because we weren't sure how busy it might be and there were 7 of us) and our server took our drink order right away. Their margaritas are excellent - get the raspberry one (frozen) with sugar on the rim - you won't be sorry! I had the ground beef Chimichanga. It's served with cheese sauce over it with refried beans, guacamole, lettuce, sour cream, and rice on the side. It's slightly spicy but not too hot. A very filling meal. We stay in a neighboring town and come to Alpena for dinner once a month and Mango's is one we enjoy returning to. read more

Stopped in this cute beach town for a little lunch on our Michigan beach run in August. A $5 margarita hit the spot with chips and salsa. We sat on the patio to enjoy the gorgeous 3D fish mural on the wall across the walkway. Service was ok on the patio, but it seemed five different servers had responsibility for no one in particular. I ordered the grilled fish tacos on corn, and spouse had the beef soft taco lunch on flour. The food was solid for small town Michigan made Mexican food. I would visit again when in the area. Wow, a lot of 4 star reviews. That's a lot of LIARS. Ok... So we had the misfortune of using their outside Mango Express. For sake of argument, let's say that Qdoba is half the quality of Chipotle. This was less than half the quality of Qdoba. Taco Bell was better on every single occasion. My burrito was an unseasoned and runny mess. One member of our party got a bowl with chicken and it was inedible, not cooked well and seasoned as much as your average styrofoam packaging. Another member got ground beef nachos. Since when do you get RARE/pink ground beef on NACHOS!? That person didn't eat theirs either. Not sure why the indoor part was busy, is it the booze? Or the ignorance of the locals to anything resembling "standards"? You decide but you'd be better off going ANYWHERE than here. read more

I recently had a frustrating experience with an order at Mangos which I posted about here. However, I am coming back to edit the review because of the exceptional way in which the owner promptly and kindly rectified the situation. I reached out via Facebook, not expecting any type of reply, but wanting to vent my frustration with what had occurred. Within minutes, the owner of Mangos replied. He expressed his regret for the situation, and went above and beyond with offering refunds, another meal, etc. Far more than was even necessary to "make it right". We were able to exchange some messages and I told him I'd be satisfied if he just wanted to re-do the meal the next day. After all, Mangos is a local small business doing good things in the community. However, the owner's willingness to go above and beyond and to so quickly work to make things right entirely changed the experience in my mind. Today, I was able to stop in and meet the owner personally. And, just as he promised, he had a meal prepared and all ready to go for me. With exceptional customer service and care like that, I will undoubtedly be back to enjoy plenty of meals at Mangos! Kudos to them. Side note, the owner was dressed as a doctor for Halloween. I did a double-take when I thought the local surgeon was pulling a shift seating folks in the restaurant. Haha. It was a nice added touch of fun. Very nice nice Mexican restaurant located in downtown Alpena. This business has the typical selections you expect to see at a sit down Mexican restaurant where the food and the ingredients are fresh and the dishes well made and very tasty. For my entree I had the Burrito Azteca that had chorizo, carnita's, grilled onions, topped with red, green and white sauce and garnished sour cream and avocado. Very very tasty. The burrito was accompanied by Mexican rice and beans that were equally well made and tasty. the true testament of how good this dish was is that I cleaned my plate which I normally dont do and usually have food left over on my plate. the meal was accompanied by gratis house chips and sauce which were excellent and a LARGE house margarita on special for $6 which was oh so tasty and quite a deal in itself. in fact I plan on returning here in the very near future for just the Margarita alone as I am a huge fan of well made ones which this business clearly excels at. Relative to environment it is very casual and very colorful with bright vibrant colors and Mexican theme painted furniture that clearly adds to the dining experience. staff is very friendly with great follow up and appears to be another strength of this business. Overall i had a wonderful dining experience and can attest that the high YELP scores you see on this business are well deserved. i definitely will be returning in the near future to sample other items on their menu and to order another one or two of their Margaritas. read more

In town with friends to do a little shopping on the one day all but two restaurants close down! Never feeling sad about choosing Mexican in any form, we all opted for Mangos. The service was excellent. I'll make a note here to say they have an option to add a round of drinks for the kitchen staff to your tab and I love that they do that!! I sure was excited about the Margaritas - we ordered a pitcher - but alas, they weren't so good. Too sweet, no lime, felt like a fluorescent-colored mix and not a very good one. The carnitas tacos though - not bad!!! I polished those off with ease. We ate our way through several baskets of chips and salsa and I couldn't get enough of their queso. Chips needed a little salt but they offered individual bowls for the salsa and frankly they win the day with that move. read more

I tend to prefer the Tawas location but the Alpena location is nicer atmosphere. The salmon dish is excellent and the traditional Mexican dishes are good but again, not quite as good as Tawas. Service has always been good. read more

The food was good the ambiance was very nice but the waiter was very rude, the bidder was slow and rude to us. There were people with their dog in a stroller and when we commented on this the manager said it happens all the time then we said that was a health code violation and she said are you a health inspector with a horrible attitude. read more

3rd time bad food experience and your out. Today we had a lovely bartender no problem there. Ordered rum & Diet Coke they got the can of Diet Coke from back as I don't drink Diet Pepsi. Diet Coke was flat other bartender tried and agreed. So they took off bill and I got a beer. Ordered 2 types a tacos not so good but I ate them. One with shredded pork was tender but bland and not hot. The other had chicken in it, it was nice and hot and just ok. My sister ordered the taco salad it was disgusting. The taco basket was overcooked , we sent it back got a new one, shell ok but the taco meat they used was like mush it looked like dogfood and was nasty. Did not eat it at all. Bartender took it off the bill. I been a chef and in the food service my whole life I would never make or send out food like that. Mango's score is below any star. read more

Went here Saturday and got a margarita & enchiladas. Everything was covered in salt first sip of the margarita I got a literal mouth full of salt. The rice was coated in salt I couldn't even eat it. Went in on a Monday evening with my parents, grandparents, and sister The place was half full when we got there and when we left it was packed to the brim. Nice setting with attention to detail in decorations. The restroom was clean and scented with enjoyable music. Impressive for a busy restaurant Service and staff was friendly, and very hard-working. Our waiter always made sure everybody in the restaurant was happy and had character (in the good sense). He was always running around as well as the staff there, but in a very organized and passionate way. You can tell the people that work here really make sure the place maintains its status and respect. A rare sight for restaurants in general, even before the pandemic. We immediately got the chips and salsa. The chips were decent, nothing special. The salsa was also decent, nothing special and had no spice to it at all. The chips and salsa definitely needed boldness to it. The weakest part of our dinner by far. I ordered the Grilled Lime Salmon - When I got it I immediately thought the Salmon was dry (you can see in the pic), but to my surprise it was perfectly cooked and tasted fantastic! - The Mexican rice was also very good and perhaps it could have been a bit more moist, but that would be nitpicking to the extreme - The avocado mango salsa had a nice combination of flavors that made the dish pop. Goes well with the salmon but the salmon tasted so good by itself that I ate it that way. The only negative I noticed about this salsa was that the mango was not fresh and I could not taste it at all when eaten alone. This could be because they make a batch at the beginning of the day or maybe the mangos were not at ripeness, but other than that it was great I also had a bite out of my dad's Guacamole Salmon and it was good. Salmon cooked to perfection and the avocado was fresh and original, tasted really good. I had one of my sister's Crazy Tacos since she could not finish them and they were incredible! The outer shell tasted amazing as they create their own and the steak inside the taco tasted delicious. The only negative about the dish was the combination of flavors as the shell and meat were fantastic, but the lettuce and sour cream on top brought the quality down. (This perhaps speaks to the high quality of the shell and steak). I would have preferred them to instead make a special salsa for the tacos to make it top-notch. But overall incredible! Negatives: - Chips and Salsa: they are the appetizer and precursors to the main dishes so they need to pop as much as the main dishes do. And they give them to everybody so improving this would only give even more value - Lack of boldness in salsas. They had no spice and it would have been perfect if they added some spice to it. Of course we are in Michigan so not too much spice, but a nice kick would be fantastic Positives: - Great location in town - Incredible passionate and friendly staff - The chefs are without a doubt very skilled and strong, they have something special here for sure as the dishes are fantastic - The negatives can be easily fixable - Leagues better than an average restaurant, I just look for perfection in everything which is why I nitpick so much I would definitely come back to this place if I am in town. One of the strongest restaurants I have ever been to and it is as close as you can get to authentic. Very impressed! read more

The food and staff are great though one time we went the lettuce in my burrito was old and slimy, the manager gave my girlfriend and I a new burrito but the whole time we felt like we were having daggers glared at us. The crowd is usually a bit loud, talking and socializing. The entrance feels cramped and like you are entering an underground night club but for the most part what you see is visibly clean. Definitely the best place for mexican food in Alpena though. read more

Mango's is such a pleasant location for enjoying a meal with family or friends. They have an extensive menu, great drinks, great choices for beer (including craft beers), and the ambiance is wonderful. If you like eating outside they have a nice patio with umbrella covered tables. Food is top notch. Danielle our server was perfect. Always there just when you need her and not too much. Of all Mexican cuisine in Alpena it's the best spot! Walk inside and you're stepping into a whole new world. With the Mexican music and favorite hits playing, and all things from decor to lighting, it's like you stepped into Mexican town! Large bar area, plenty of high top, regular table and booths to choose from. Great place to bring a small or medium size party. We got lime margaritas and they were delicious! Pretty strong so be careful. We debated between getting our own and the large funnel pitcher, but they only do on the rocks and not frozen so we chose our own. Not disappointed in the least! They provide free chips and salsa and have two kinds of hot sauce at the table. They'll keep them coming! We debated for a while on what to get, everything looked delicious and everything we got came out just as we expected. Plenty of rise and beans, large tacos and plenty of toppings. They have taco lunch specials and another menu with plenty more options if you don't like their lunch menu. I got chicken tacos and they were amazing! I've been traveling to alpena on business for about 4 years and have been eating at the same few places. I drove by kind of on accident today and I screeched my tires pulling in. From the name I was wondering if it was just a bar but was happy when I walked in and smelled the food and saw tables. The mango margarita was really amazing and the food was equally as good. Service was perfect and my food came out in, I'm not kidding, 3 mins or less. I have a new favorite here, if not my all-the-time-dinner -spot (cuz of course, I love to explore), then to end the night with a margarita on each trip. read more

The tequila bar is wonderful. As always the margaritas are so flavorful. I had the shrimp ceviche on a recommendation and am super glad I did.
