This is a little place that's not too far from the WI border so the location can't be beat. Its cute but not that large and is just pretty OK. My visit was in August of 2018, late to finish my draft.... If you are coming with small children, be prepared to do diaper changes in your car or on a blanket on the grass - there's only one bathroom (in the back of the restaurant) and the changing table in the bathroom is tiny and very wobbly. There are also no nursing facilities that I saw. You also can not bring your stroller into the restaurant or shop and it's not handicap accessible. Having to leave my stroller outside the restaurant was a huge irritant to me since it had all the things we need to keep a toddler entertained though lunch. For a place that is geared to families, it think it's a huge drawback. I understand that the space is cramped but you should accomodate your guests in wheelchairs at the very least. The restaurant itself had pretty heavy offerings (see picture) for lunch time so I opted for the soup/salad. I think the menu changes based on season/days. The soup of the day when we visited was chicken noodle, onion or tomato. The chicken noodle soup was actually incredibly great but the salad bar was pretty disappointing. Fountain drinks were also $3 each, which I thought was pretty steep. On to what we came for - animals and fun for kids! There were goats and a cute little bucket conveyor system to feed the goats on top of the bridge. My toddler loved that. There were also chickens and various farmyard birds, horses and ponies (halflingers really). We purchased a couple pony rides for my son and he seemed to enjoy it, though the horses did not. One of the horses started playing up so my son had to ride another - which is fine, we can't control animals, right? (and I grapple with the morality of exhibiting animals/riding them etc.) Maybe they need to leave the horses with not so even tempers out of the pony ride.... There was a small corn maze that I didn't go in but my husband and son did - they seemed to like it. Several play areas and a very very very small corn pool kept my son entertained for a bit but the play houses and play train seemed to be a bit run down - but i get it, it's a farm. There's also a slide that is nice for younger kids because it's not too tall and it's pretty slow - you go down on a piece of burlap. We didn't have much interaction with staff but the ones we did talk to (purchase tickets, restaurant, etc.) didn't seem that happy to be there, as other reviews suggested. The review is exclusively for the restaurant and the store. I did not go inside the orchard to pick apples or for other activities. Enjoyed the lunch buffet. We were seated on the outer section (but inside) which had a nice view and big windows. Nice spot right by the fireplace, but it was a super hot day and the AC was on full blast and the place we sat down was getting all the air so I was quite cold. The food was ok. Fried chicken was actually really good. Cornbread was also yummy. Other foods were ok, but nothing impressive. Wasn't too impressed with the chicken pot pie. And the dessert section was pitiful. It was just two platters of donuts. considering the huge selection of really delicious looking and smelling desserts in the store on the other side of the restaurant, this was lame. And the plates were seriously small for a buffet. They're bigger at those 6.99 Chinese buffets. This buffet was $15. The store! it is very nicely decorated with lots of character and lots of miscellaneous items and things you'd get as gifts. Everything is overpriced, but the experience is still nice. The selection of pies, donuts and other desserts is awesome. I got their 4 mini apple pies fo $20 and they were seriously delicious. 5 stars for just the apple pies. For those of us who don't want to pick apples but still want fresh apples, they have "fresh picked" apples in their refrigerator, as well out in a big bin just outside where you buy your tickets. I thought the ones in the bins would be fresher, so I bought a bag to "pick" through the apples in the bin. You only get a limited selection of apples (3 types) and of course, you're not picking them off trees, but it's better than pick n save. No waxy sheen on the apples either, so I like that. Also, you can eat the apples off the bins to try. I asked the lady working in the ticket booth for any samples, and she told me to just eat them off the bin. it's like you get to eat the apples when you're picking them inside the orchard. But I did notice that as I was grabbing the apples in the bin, that they were cold and had condensation drops on them. So I thought they were picked fresh, like that day, but they must have been pre-picked some days before, refrigerated, and then put outside. There's no telling how long ago they had been picked. So they weren't necessarily more fresh than the apples that they sell in the refrigerator. Last week, I went for the second weekend in a row because of those to die for apple pies and noticed that the prices for the pre picked apples were higher. When I asked, they said that it was because they were honey crisp apples and those are premium. So I paid extra for these premium honey crisp apples... and was totally disappointed at home. The apple pies, still fabulous. Honey crisp apples... Seriously. They were more like... crispy apples? No honey. No sweetness. Just crisp. And sour. Like Granny Smith apples. Plus they were mostly green. For it costing more because they are the popular variety, I would expect them to taste better than the regular apples. Will not buy those apples here again. Better tasting and kinder on my pockets at Costco. But overall, I can see how this would be a great place to bring kids and have family time. And to get apple pies. I used to love their pies, however, something has changed. I ordered freshly baked pies in 2020 and they were cold at pickup. Cold as if they had been refrigerated and they didn't taste as good/fresh as they did in years past. I chalked it up to COVID times. I ordered freshly baked pies in 2021 and they too didn't taste freshly baked. I ordered freshly baked pies today and they didn't taste as good. Previously (2019 and prior), I'd orders pies and at pickup the pies would be warm whereas you could tell it was recently baked. Visited Apple Holler with family this week and had a pleasant experience. We visited on a weekday afternoon/evening for apples and dinner. Would have wanted to have done some apple picking but since we arrived after 4pm, they had already closed the grounds. Bummer. But the lady at the counter gladly picked us a 1/2 peck of apples (since they were already out for the day) so that was nice of em. If you do go here, go early during the day so you won't miss out. Upon visiting apple holler, you find this barn storefront with home made cheese, jams, baked goods and pies. The barn style restaurant/store is surrounded by a cute lil farm and orchard which includes a corn maze and tons of kid-friendly activities. Great place to bring the little ones as there are tons of things to do out here. Place can be a little pricey. A friend of mine mentioned its a bit of a tourist trap and i could see why but the grounds are well maintained and the food is good. Now for the food... It was DELICIOUS and the meals were fresh from farm to table. My parents ordered the beer battered fried fish and shrimp and i had the chicken pot pie with mac and cheese and fruit sides. I would have wanted to sample the chicken and dumplings but it was unfortunately not on the menu. I was not going to leave there until i had some apples, apple donuts and some cheese curds. Try their garlic 5 cheese spread. It was out of this world! The garlic was not overpowering but you could definitely taste the cheese! Our experience with the staff was great. They were friendly, accommodating and checked in on us often. From what i understand, this place can be very busy during the weekend and summer months so if you want to have a guaranteed spot at the table, try to come in during the week mid-day. One thing to mention, you will not find this place using mapquest. Sylvania is actually Frontage road so beware or you will get lost! (This review is based on the restaurant!) I had an okay experience at Apple Holler. I loved the actual place itself, like picking apples and the small petting zoo, but I was not too fond with the restaurant. I ordered an Avocado Bacon Omelette with a side of fruit, my mother ordered a French toast with cherries. Although the staff were very courteous, the food was not very delightful. My omelette was barely cooked and there was an excessive amount of cheese. The plating was not very great also. I could not eat much the fruit as they tasted very strange and rotten. I did however like the price range and the amount you get, although it may seem too large! I have overall had an amazing experience picking apples, but had not too good of a meal. read more

We had such a great time enjoying the beginning of fall at Apple Holler! This is the perfect place for a family with kids, but my boyfriend and I had a blast on our own as well. A corn maze and goats to feed are just the beginning of the great attractions around the park. Be sure to get a bag and hop on the tractor ride out to the Apple orchard to eat as many apples as you'd like and fit as many as you can into your bag! So many varieties and a detailed map of what's in season and how you can best use them at home. ARRIVE EARLY!!!! I can't stress this enough. We got there around 11:15am and there were a bunch of people, but by the time we left around 2:30, parking looked like an absolute mad house and the wait for the restaurant was an hour and 45 minutes. read more

Thoroughly enjoyed my stop here. Heading from Milwaukee into northern Illinois to visit my family and grandkids, I've passed by many times, always telling myself I'd try it sometime. Got there for breakfast and just loved it. From the barn-style restaurant to the overalls-wearing servers, it felt a little corny, but fun. The omelette and fried potatoes portion size was huge, hot and delicious. It really fit the bill, the prices were reasonable and the food absolutely delicious! This week, the cornbread even had apple filling inside of it; I'm not a cornbread fan, but this would change my mind if all cornbread I had was this moist and flavorful. I would recommend the prime rib omelette will apple tea. I did take some hot apple cider to go and it was incredibly good. A great stop, and I actually liked the country store that was attached to the restaurant...a real pleasure all the way around! read more

I should have yelped this place before driving there. Our apple picking plan has turned into a disaster. The place was crowded, and the owners are clearly more into making a quick buck rather than letting people enjoy apple picking. After standing in a long line, we've finally followed the advice of some returning customers, and gave up on the idea. In an attempt not to leave empty handed, we picked up a few apples to purchase, and my and my kids' hands turned yellow. Came to celebrate birthday with pancakes. When we got here we were told dining closed to private party until 11:45; this was not noted on their website. We were told breakfast served till noon then told we had to get lunch. VERY disappointed. We waited 45 minutes to be seated & when I ordered chicken salad sandwich was told they were out! Extremely disappointed. Have been coming to Apple Holler for years and didn't realize there were changes to the restaurant. I must have missed that email. With the complete understanding and respect that places need to change due to the pandemic the restaurant was a disappointment. We stood in a line that did not move and watched people jump to tables without placing an order. We ended up leaving after a long drive. We are saddened by the change. I have seen this place by the freeway so many times, but never went in, mainly because of their mediocre star rating here. My daughter and I were looking for brunch one day, and decided to try it. The skillet I got was perhaps not the best I've ever had, as the potatoes were a bit too brown for my liking, and seemed to overpower the other flavors. That said, everything else was wonderful. We started with hot cider made on the premises, and cherry cornbread, also made on site. The service was warm and personal, and their bakery case was positively sinful. I got an apple dumpling to take home, and we almost fought over it later. I've heard that in the apple picking season you can barely get near the place, and the outside is rather cheesy looking, with all the kid activities. Overall I thought this place did a great job of putting kids first and making the experience fun for the fall season. With that said, it's a bit pricy. For 10 bucks your kid gets to ride on a wagon that has a hay bail on it haha (those city slickers will pay anything for a country experience, right!) But, I get it. Their season is only so long and you have to make money somehow. The place was fun, saw some fat goats, smelled some nature in the form of horse shit, learned about Johnny Appleseed, and ate donuts around a fire, kids loved it, can't really complain. I gave this place 2 stars instead of the minimum rating because yes, it delivers what it claims, there are lots of apples and activities. Having said that, there are literally dozens of apple orchards in southwestern Wisconsin that will provide better value and experience. Having passed this orchard many times on the highway, we were willing to give it a shot this year with our two boys, 3-5 year old. We picked a mid September day, and in addition, picked a time based on google wait times, that seemed like not the peak time on a Saturday (mid afternoon). The first thing we were greeted with are fliers handed out at the parking lot, stating prices of apple bags. Be aware that every person 2 and older must have an apple bag to enter the orchard or play area. The smallest bag price, which is tiny and maybe smaller than an average brown paper lunch bag, is 15 dollars. For a family of 4, it was 60 dollars so simply enter the place. There is also a ticket system where you buy tickets to participate in certain activities such as slides or pony rides etc. A small cup of apple cider is 3 dollars. After waiting 30 minutes in line, we were shown the menu of tickets (which I think could've been posted on the flier or on a bigger sign) because it essentially forces you to make a decision quickly about what activities you want to do or eat. I have no doubt people in a hurry buy more tickets than they might need. The play area was incredibly mediocre, for 15 dollars a person, I simply expected more. My kids played in a little barn filled with hay bales and a little maze with a small kiddie slide at the end. There were goats and a small chicken coop that desperately needed to be cleaned because the odor was hardly bearable. When we got into line for the hayride to the orchard, we stood in this tiny little cleared line amongst some bushes and it literally felt like we were cows in line waiting to be slaughtered. Once we got into the orchard, which is massive, I have never encountered so many mosquitos in my life. We were all wearing long sleeves and pants and got 8-10 mosquito bites each. I watched mosquitos land on other customers shirts and bite them through clothing. At this point, our entire apple picking experience was ruined and we filled our sad 15 dollar tiny bags with apples without regard for taste or size and left promptly. Would not go again, would not recommend. Could it be better in October on a weekday? Maybe. Would it justify 15 dollars per person as a blatant exploitation of parents and being visible off the highway? Absolutely not. Find a more rural orchard and support your local farmer. read more

Restaurant is 3 stars, really only the fresh hot cider is exceptional, rest of the food is average. Fall Fest is 4 stars. And only reason it's not 5 is they don't have enough porta potties and they aren't cleaned nearly enough. But the orchards are beautiful and huge, great tractor ride, fun activities, reasonable pricing. Parking is a bit of a mess though, be prepared to walk 10 minutes to your car. read more

The worst pick-your-own farm I've ever been to by far. Totally disorganized, waaaay too bureaucratic - just getting into the farm takes at least 30 mins - most of that is a pointless wait near the ticket booths because processing a single customer takes 5 mins or so. They're incredibly slow. Plus, the ticket booth hands you more paperwork than DMV. The farm is very overcrowded. They admit too many people. The common areas of the farm are tiny and targeted to little kids. The picking is decent but not great by any means. Plus overpriced. There are lines everywhere. You spend most of your time standing lines. Will not return. Ever. read more

A really fun spot for family fun. We made the drive from Evanston to pick some peaches and check out the farm park and restaurant, we were not disappointed! In fact, our daughter decided she would rather bring a friend next month to celebrate her 4th birthday rather than have a party back home. We were able to pick 1.25 pecks of apples and peaches for $45 (military discount included), which was plenty for our family of four. This price includes entrance to the play park. Considering the park provided hours of entertainment for our daughter and we were able to take home so much fruit, it felt worth the price for us. A fresh peach off a tree? Nothing short of the taste of the sweetest summer day. We all enjoyed finding the best fruit, although it was hard to save room for lunch at the restaurant! So glad we did though... The food was delicious! I had a turkey Reuben with apple sauerkraut, my husband had the French dip, our daughter had a hamburger with baked apples, and my mother had the brat with apple kraut. We had some potato pancakes on the side and cheese curds for an appetizer. My sandwich and the pancake was amazing. My husband's sandwich paled in comparison but was still solid. Like any respectable Wisconsin eatery there was New Glarus available. After eating we headed out to the farm park. Our daughter enjoyed the quaint entertainment, a corn maze, a giant box of corn (like a sand box), slides, and feeding goats. This park is probably best for kids 8 and under. We are looking forward to coding get next month for more apples, a pumpkin, playing, and eating delicious apple-heavy food. It is a great time on the cheap for little ones. read more

I recently was heading to Milwaukee and wanted to stop to get a bite to eat. As I was going along I-94 and trying to make my way around the construction, I found the sign for the Apple Holler. Now I had been this way many times but had never stopped. There was no better time like then to check this place out. I get there and walk in and notice not only a restaurant but a store where you can get items from wine to apple items to cheese. After looking around the store, I decided to go into the restaurant. After being seated, I took a look around and noticed that it was decorated nicely for Christmas. After checking the menu out, I decided on an omelette. I was also given some bread and was able to put some apple butter on it...oh wow was that good! My meal came and it was delicious. A high recommendation for people passing through en route to Chicago or Milwaukee and points beyond. Oh yeah it looks like its a place where you can pick apples during the fall so yea another reason to go here. read more

We love stopping here as we head up to the UP of Michigan. We bring Apple Cider and donuts for our friends and it makes for a pleasant break along the road. I've been driving past this place for years, always saying I was going to stop in some day and just never doing it because there were tons of cars, or just not wanting to deal with the kids who run through this place. But on a recent, beautiful, Indian Summer day, I decided I wanted a day in the country so it was up to Apple Holler for lunch and maybe a stroll through the orchards. Given it was off season, we had the place pretty much to ourselves as there were maybe only 4 tables full of people, mostly seniors, there for the buffet. I was surprised that they had a lunch buffet given the small amount of patrons but then again this IS Wisconsin, land of plenty of food. We were seated in an atrium type room on the front of the barn. I wasn't crazy about the seat as it smelled funny in there and the windows were dirty (lots of little finger smudges). But the friends I was with said they were okay with it so we stayed. I should have gone with my gut as I just can't get over places that don't seem clean. And then to make matters worse, an employee started to clean the windows around us, so the smell of cleaner mixed with the smell of food . . .never a good thing. Big points off for this! Our server was just okay. She seemed to be irritated with us as we asked questions about the menu and tried to understand what the difference was between the buffet and ordering a la carte. It was clear she just wanted us to go to the buffet so she didn't have to be bothered but only one in our group of 4 took her up on her offer. But the buffet did have plenty of food on it for about $12.95 (I think that was the cost, our server really didn't know) While there were a range of funny (odd?) things that happened on this visit- the one that still has me laughing is when she asked my friend, after he ordered the fried chicken, if he wanted "4 or 8 pieces"? He looked at me like she wasn't speaking English (she was) and needed an interpretation. I asked the server if we were talking about bone in broasted chicken, and when she said yes, we went with 4 pieces. I am still chuckling about who she thought was going to eat all of that?? And if that wasn't funny enough, his order came with three sides, mashed potatoes stuffing covered in gravy and coleslaw. Plenty of food for a family of 4! My club sandwich was pretty good and the soup I had to start was also good although it was served to me in the strangest way that I can't believe didn't burn the server's hands. And know that you get some cornbread and apple butter that was also quite tasty. The best thing about our visit was a stop in the gift shop to buy some donuts for the rest of our road trip. They were fresh and the woman that was working the shop was very pleasant and helpful. We didn't make it to the orchards on this visit but they are there as is a petting zoo and other kids activities. Maybe if I had kids this would be a better experience. I wanted to love Apple Holler but between our server's attitude and the fact that the seating area just didn't feel clean, I just couldn't. But the food is actually pretty good which is what has me waffling between 2 and 3 stars. But those donuts? Worth every calorie! read more

It was one of the coldest muddiest Saturday mornings in October memory so I realize things were a bit gray and mud speckled. Parking is free alongside the frontage road, $5 in the Apple Holler Lot. We bought tickets for the kids activities 12 for $10.50. My son got the shortest pony ride in history! You'd think with no business that day the girl could have walked him around longer than 30 seconds. Seriously. He enjoyed the seated Zipline and the youth handlers were very kind and well-trained in working with kids. They have a ton of different things for kids to do, which is a plus. The corn maze was so flooded we couldn't even make it through correctly. There were other games like Pumpkin bowling and a ring toss. The girls running these were really nice and supportive of my son although he didn't get one ring on the board! He still got a small prize. The fields were reportedly super muddy so we skipped a hayride out to pick our own. The pumpkin selection at the store was limited and expensive. A large and small pumpkin for $12. I could have gotten two nice ones cheaper at the Jewel (including the cost to diesel it there). The bakery pumps out nice Apple Cider doughnuts and they are a must order! We got an almond twist which was tasty, and hot cider. A Gallon of hot cider was well worth it, but all in all I think we dropped $45 at Apple Holler for two people. Ouch. the location is super-convenient being right off of I-94, but I'm not sure I would make this an annual fall destination. read more

Anyways, on the way to Kenosha one Saturday morning, we got hungry and this was the closest spot to us. To our surprise they had a breakfast buffet for $13.95! I love LOVE breakfast, make it a buffet and I'm sold! Their buffet has quite a few options, but I liked the hashbrowns and egg & veggie scramble they have (it has a little bit of a spicy kick to it). We hit the bacon tray too and found bacon "chips" all the way at the bottom. Crispy and flavorful bacon chips! The crispiness is the best part. Yum! A woman at the table next to us had gotten a Bloody Mary and I had to take a picture of it. It had bacon, a boiled egg, cheese curds, a pickle, olives and some celery. A meal in itself. It's a shame I stuffed my face, otherwise I would have gotten one! I'll definitely be back and I will check out the orchard in the fall too! Wouldn't mind picking some apples or getting some pumpkins. From some of the reviews I've read, there is poison ivy there so watch out! read more

Back in October 2011 - I originally posted this review - I never received a gift card as I was promised (as of 10/2011) - Sherri Gavin either mailed it or it got lost.. New Post for 2014/2015 Prices have gone up - I spent over $250 for five of us at the buffet and entrance fee and we were treated like crap. Crappy expensive parking in the mud, place is dirty and basically no apples to pick. Original Post for October 2011 ...we never received a reply to our question on why the two cashiers cannot take care of customers in the General Store while they are waiting in line for custom taffy apples or ice cream. Someone deleted my post regarding the two cashiers that told us they couldn't sell us a bottle of water since "There may be another person waiting in line for a bottle of water".... Then 3 minutes later, the old man from Apple Holler tells certain wandering - out of line - customers to go to the cashiers while my sister in law is looking outdoors for a bottle of water.
