We've been to Birchwood Grill three times now. It's good at what it does: homey, American buffet. The bartender Barb is great, she was the sweetest. The food is tasty enough, but the ambiance is where this place shines. The Apple Cider Sangria is delicious. But... be wary of the crab, it's Wisconsin. Not Florida. Overall, great little spot that's usually less busy than the surrounding competitors.

We had made a reservation for Ester Brunch. It was kind of a last minute thing. The only times available were 9:30 am or 5pm. We took the 9:30am. We were seated immediately but walked into a room with 1/2 folding metal chairs and 1/2 nice dining chairs (pictured). The price was 40.00/pp. The food was mediocre at best. Beef was super fatty. Bacon was served in clumps (pictured). Nothing was "great". The dessert items- some of which had been bought frozen were pretty good. Our server was friendly but they were understaffed. The crab and lobster mac and cheese was not there. That was one of the things I was looking forward to.

I wish I lived around here because this place is amazing. I've been here twice in 2 years and have only ever done the buffet but my god is it good and very affordable for all you can eat. The decorations are amazing and the lady who works there (I assume the owner) works her butt off. Shes constantly running around taking orders, cleaning up plates, and checking people out but always happy and kind. I wish I could give more than 5 stars!

First time here. We're traveling from out of town and stopped here on a whim. Very pleasantly surprised! Cozy and warm atmosphere with the cutest fall and Halloween decorations. The service was fantastic! Prompt and super friendly. Delicious coffee drinks and the soup/salad bar was amazing!! Everything was kept full, ice cold, clean and tasted delicious. If we are ever back in this area we will make it point to come back here!

They are known for their buffet but they have other stuff as well. Their fish fry is pretty good and they offer different fish options. Most of seems it is bought frozen then fried. Their different salads are pretty good but you have to play guess the salad as they are not named. The service is really good. Our waitress was very attentive even though we had the buffet. The ambiance is pretty but confusing... you think you are going into a fancy lodge theme restaurant but it is super casual and it doesn't match. Not a date place for sure but good for family and friends.

While my walleye was not bad, I was certainly not impressed with the flavor of the breading. I found the rice to be very salty and only ate a couple bites. My meal included soup and the salad bar. The soups were unlabeled and it was hard to tell exactly what it was. Salad bar offering were pretty average. The cucumber/tomato/onion salad was not really marinated well. I found the best parts of my meal was the apples dusted in cinnamon sugar and the pineapple. The ranch salad dressing was just okay. The salad bar area was very clean and well filled though. So it's got that going.

Our group started with three salads, all delicious, I highly recommend the arugula goat cheese. I also tried a bit of the patty squash which was great (I'm not usually a fan of squash). I shared two vegetarian dishes with a friend, a tomato burrata risotto I'm still thinking about) and a beat pesto that was a little bland. One of my highlights was the blush cocktail with pink peppercorn and passionfruit that tasted so refreshing and summery. Our table also tried three desserts, and the plates were scraped clean. This is a great spot, with good food and I would definitely come again if I lived nearby!

It's been several years since our previous visit, and the only thing that ever seems to change here is the prices. The over-the-top (but dated) elegance, a commanding view of Lake Michigan, doting service, and well-prepared classics remain exactly as we remember. We made our reservations online and were seated promptly upon arrival. The cocktails are expertly mixed and generous in size (the Missus and I are Bloody Mary types). The days of a "free" relish tray are no more, but we ordered one as our app ($13) and the plentiful portion was more than enough for our party of 4. A basket of freshly-baked rolls accompanied by a thick slab of melty butter arrived next. Entrée prices include a choice of soup or salad and a side dish. Their baked French onion soup rivals most pub versions and the house-made salad dressings are exceptional. For my entrée, I could not resist ordering that old school supper club classic, Chicken Oscar. My dining companions went with chopped steak and chicken parmigiana. Everything was superb and the portions were so generous that we boxed up half to take home. For dessert, we wanted something a bit lighter than their caloric classics. Although not on the menu, the kitchen gladly doled out 1-scoop ice cream sundaes (they can also prepare a gold brick sundae). The staff will not rush you. Plan on spending an entire evening here, soaking up the nostalgia. Don't miss the bar with its spectacular view of the lake. The retro Hobnob experience and Wisconsin's lower gas prices are a great incentive for us Illinoisans to dine here more often!

Really wanted to like this place and looked forward to trying it for a special occasion dinner, but…read morethe experience was so so, not good. First, we went early on a weeknight around 4pm. We were one of 5 tables in the entire place and stood in entrance for 5 minutes waiting for someone to seat us. We got seated and atmosphere is seemed great. Nicely decorated, comfortable booths, but something was off with the vibe. Not sure what but the staff we saw just didn't seem like they wanted to be there. It took forever for server to greet us and was not very warm or welcoming. Explained it was our first time here and response was nothing...except did we want to order drinks. Took forever to receive drinks then we ordered an appetizer of speciality dish wildfire shrimp just ok, tiny deep fried spicy shrimp with side of ranch. Just ok, had definite kick to it, if you like spicy. We placed our food order and again food took forever to come out. Salads were fresh. Bread was good. Filet which was supposed to be 6 ounces but seemed very thin, cooked more medium than medium well. NY strip steak was very thin too but cooked to order medium. Steaks had overpowering amount of seasoning on them. Baked potatoes were lukewarm at best and even though ordered loaded very little sour cream or butter. I would have asked for more but server never came back to check on us in timely manner. Had to use the butter that came with the bread but barely warm potato is unappetizing. It took forever to get our check too - no apology nothing. For the price $30-40 per person, there are MUCH better choices across the border in Illinois. Overall, drinks and bread are decent, I'd recommend driving another 20-30 minutes south and check out the steakhouses in Gurnee, Illinois, skip this location as service was slow and food was not great and served lukewarm. Meh.
