I recently stopped by Apple Fritter in San Mateo and tried the Naughty Burrito to go along with the Brunchurrito, which I ate there. Both burritos were satisfying and definitely worth trying. The restaurant has an open layout with plenty of parking, making it easy to stop by. It's located next to a car mechanic shop, and I liked that they had old-school Pokémon playing on the TV--it added a fun nostalgic vibe while I was eating. Customer service was acceptable, but nothing really stood out. It's more of a self-service experience, so if you want water or anything else, you'll need to get up and grab it yourself. It would've been nice if someone checked in once or twice. One thing that did confuse me happened on a different visit. I arrived around 1:50 p.m. hoping to order food to go, but the gentleman locked the door and told me they were no longer taking orders. If you close at 2 i dont see how you were closed already. It was a little odd since there were still plenty of customers inside eating. I understand kitchens have closing times, but it would've been helpful if the hours or last call for food were clearer. 3.5 stars cons: while the interior whimsical decor is cute, they are all caked with thick layers of grease and dust. the thought of a gust of breeze coming through to move the hanging decor and having large dust fall into food was on my mind the entire time. the condiments on the table were all also dirty, doesn't look like they were cleaned at the end of each service for some time. parking is awful, minimal spots and tight spaces so if one car parks off then it's messed up for the rest of the cars. there is no street or close neighborhood parking. i know that's not their fault but needed to give a heads up to people coming. would be nice if the next door (closed) auto service would allow weekend parking. pros: extensive menu for food and coffee. have been many times for take out and each different item tried has been flavorful and seasoned well. crispy tots! donuts taste fresh and flavorful with many different types. we were lucky to have had the apple fritter before they sold out and it satisfied the craving i had for one which prompted this recent sit down visit for breakfast. i do agree with another comment an outdoor/separate window for people just coming for donuts would be smart as i could definitely see myself wanting to come for just donuts but being deterred by the line (and parking.) they work hard to turn indoor tables quickly to keep line moving quickly. would be nice if they placed silverware on the table after cleaning so we didn't have to flag someone down. or have a station for cutlery pickup that's not the labeled take out only cutlery they had. plenty of outdoor seating. having menus available outdoors would help with the line i'm sure as you don't get much time to review the menu once you're close to the register. overall worth a visit, weekday would probably be best for a first visit before braving weekend crowd. please work on cleaning as the rise in foodborne illnesses are at the forefront of everyone's mind lately and one moldy lip of a condiment is a moment away from getting someone sick. read more

When they first opened for a few hours a day, the locals couldn't get enough of the homemade food and quirky atmosphere. Now, it's a San Mateo staple. We visited Apple Fritter on Easter Sunday on a whim, and it was SO WELL WORTH IT! This stop was about halfway between SF and where we were staying in Cupertino, so it was perfect before our long SF exploration day! My husband found this place online, so we decided to stop by for breakfast on his birthday. He is a big fan of breakfast burritos so of course we ordered a Naughty Burrito to share. He picked the chicken apple sausage for the protein and also added bacon (+$3.00). The other ingredients including the hash brown and cheddar paired well with the chipotle mayo. They even grilled the tortilla and made it crispy just the way he liked it. Couldn't leave without also ordering the apple fritter and old fashion! Since it was on a Monday, there were only a few customers. I liked that they have both indoor and outdoor seating available. It's located in an industrial area so it was quiet and peaceful. I think like everyone else found this place while searching for a good brunch place to go to. Parking wasn't too bad, I think turnover was pretty good. As people were leaving, more people came to park. The line can get long at times but moves pretty fast. Drinks: Dragon fruit mimosa - I'm not a mimosa fan, but this was refreshing. I highly recommend if you want something nice and light. Horchata freeze - so creamy and very cinnamony. You can really taste the cinnamon throughout the drink. Iced salted caramel latte - it was good but nothing that really stood out. Probably will not be getting again. Food: 1. Chorizo breakfast tacos with tater tots - huge portion and so tasty. The chorizo and egg with chipotle sauce, salsa, and cheese was a perfect balance. The chipotle sauce had a nice kick, and I liked that the egg and chorizo were not greasy. Tater tots were crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. 2. Churros and cream french toast - I could not get enough of this no matter how full I was. I liked that it had actual churros in it and not just like a cinnamon and sugar topping. The French toast was nice and crunchy, not super eggy and soggy. I liked that they had the syrup on the side. 3. Spicy hash - the spicy hash was really good, and jalapenos were a nice touch to make it more spicy. hash browns were well cooked, and cheese was perfectly melted. appreciated the chipotle sauce on the side. 4. Wild thang burger - The burger was juicy, and the onion ring in it was crunchy. There was a good amount of bbq sauce and jalapeños and the fries were crispy 5. Original breakfast plate with chicken pineapple sausage - classic and simple. The chicken and pineapple sausage had a nice snap to it and not salty. Donuts - we ordered a bunch to go. We got blueberry, raspberry, and banana fritters. It was super crunchy but to be honest, I sampled all of them but couldn't tell a difference. I was kind of disappointed, considering it's called apple fritter. Fruity pebbles donut was tasty but didn't care for the cookie crisp donut. I feel like it was a totally different cereal. When you enter, you wait in line to order in a small kiosk and then find seating. Indoor seating is limited but there is ample outdoor seating. Both indoors and outdoor seating are equally cold because the doors stay open so it doesn't really matter. As their name states they're known for their apple fritters, but they serve various other doughnuts as well. We did get to try their apple fritter and pumpkin fritter. Out of the two, Id still recommend the apple fritters over the pumpkin, due to the pumpkin's lack of flavor. For the food, their breakfast burrito is pretty good and substantial. The name alone suggests you exactly what you're here for: Apple Fritters. When I stepped in, it was more like a brunch café. But then you will see a wide variety of donuts, especially the fritters everyone talks about. If you're coming for their apple fritters, don't arrive later than 11 AM because they will be gone before you know it. I tried their Banana Fritter and it was surprisingly fresh. You can hear the crunch with each bite. No artificial banana flavor here... there are actual banana pieces baked right in. If you enjoy banana bread, you'll love this. I wanted to try the Pumpkin Fritter too, but it was already sold out and this was on a weekday at 9 AM. Their Ube Crumb Donut was just okay. It was not bad, but nothing memorable about it. The Pistachio Almond donut, on the other hand, looked divine! Maybe I will get that next time. Definitely plan to arrive early, and keep in mind that parking can be tight. This is an update from my last review for this place, which I did 10 years ago! I thought I should update because this place is still fantastic and my favorite dish is still the same as it has always been! First, we decided to get two doughnuts. I do love the fritters here, but I wasn't in the mood for that. We had an apricot jelly doughnut, and I also got a strawberry cream puff. Both were limited flavors, so they may not have them next time even I go in. They were both perfect doughnuts, and the fillings were also amazing. For my entree today, I strayed from my usual favorite (the spicy bacon hash) and got the Pigs Gone Wild Breakfast sandwich. I am glad I did because that sandwich is out of this world delicious. The sandwich is stacked with bacon, eggs, mushrooms, arugula, lots of cheese, and their chipotle mayo. I devoured it! The service here is pretty simple. They are expedient with bringing the food, but sometimes ordering I have trouble hearing the person behind the counter. The ambiance here is fun, with random retro pictures and toys adorning the walls. I think the only drawback can be the wait, which is sometimes pretty long. Came here at 12:30 on a Wednesday and it was pretty empty. They have a small parking lot, which was really convenient! You order at the counter then take a seat and your food is brought to you. I got the OG scramble and my boyfriend got the spicy hash. I had a bunch of modifications for my OG scramble, and the staff were able to accommodate most of them which I appreciated! They had a lot of bread options and I went with the 9-grain wheat toast which was nicely toasted and pretty fluffy. I want to go back and try a different scramble because I felt the bell peppers were too prominent in the OG scramble, but it was a well balanced meal and kept me full! My boyfriend really liked the spicy hash. It was a super generous portion and had a cheese pull with every bite. He went with chorizo which had a great flavor, and paired well with the runny egg, cheese and chipotle sauce. We also had to get an apple fritter, and also gave the ube cake donut a try. The apple fritter was to die for. It was HUGE, nice and crispy and had a great cinnamon flavor. It is on the oily side, so I could only take a few bites until it felt like too much. For the ube cake donut, you had the option of having it glazed or crumbed and we went with glaze, but we wish we got the crumb instead. The donut was super moist, but the glaze seemed to be a bit overkill and masked the ube flavor. The donut reminded us of fruit loops. Not the worst donut, but if you're looking for something that's not too sweet, I'd steer away from this one. There was plenty of seating inside, and they had outdoor seating if you wanted as well! Oh geez I was so excited to try this place, but the line took forever!! There was probably like five of us in line around noon and the restaurant itself wasn't even crowded, but I think I waited ~30 minutes in the sun for my bf and I to order our food. Good sized portion with a generous amount of meat and veggies which I appreciated! A bit salty from the bacon, but expected. Many brunch places skimp out on the veggies and protein so it was nice to see that. The rye bread was delicious and fresh. Brunch-urrito with chorizo: 4/5. Again, good sized portion, and less salty than the scramble. I think the addition of sour cream and being stuffed with hashbrown, beans, cheese, eggs really helped balance the salt of the chorizo inside the burrito. Overall, decent food, but if you come here for brunch on the weekend, be prepared to wait in the long line outside, even if the place is not overly crowded. You line up to place your order directly with the kitchen, pay there, and they bring the order out to you. I couldn't tell if you had to clean up after yourself or not -- there was a station with empty plates, but there were also staff members who went around picking up plates. Be warned, it's difficult to park (the parking lot is super small), so you may have to park at the office or strip mall areas across the street. Don't be fooled by the line out the door -- the line is just for taking orders, so it moves quickly. We were able to find seating for three people just fine for a weekend brunch. As for the food, I ordered the french toast and really enjoyed it! If you look at my other reviews, you might notice I'm a french toast enjoyer, lol, but I can get a little picky. The french toast here was great in terms of consistency (not mushy, just the right amount of bounce), and went great with the eggs (I requested them scrambled hard, in case you are looking at the picture and wondering why they aren't runny) and bacon. Such a fun place! We were up to exploring a new place for a Saturday morning breakfast and we ended up at Apple Fritter after checking them out on Yelp. I loved their fun decorations, selection of quick breakfasts, along with their menu of dine-in options. They do have a parking lot here but it's smallll. We lucked out and arrived just as another car was leaving so we were able to snag a spot. But after that, it was full again. It's also tight in terms of driveways so it does take some maneuvering to get around other cars who may be waiting. They share a driveway with a storage place too so you may encounter cars that are going there instead. Once you park, you'll wait in line to make an order at the register before finding your seat. They have their donuts/pastries on display so you can order just those or grab a menu to choose something to dine-in and enjoy. They also have menus on their walls for their drinks and drink specials. There's some seating inside and equal (if not, more) seating outside. It was nice to sit outside on a sunny day since they also have umbrellas to create shade. Service was quick. The line at the beginning moved quickly and we got our food not too long after. Staff was also quick to clean up dirty tables and you can self-serve getting to-go boxes. We ordered: + Banana Fritter: solid fritter! You get the banana filling on the inside and it's a definitely a treat that you can share. + Granola Banana Cream French Toast: Yummm! It tastes pretty much as you'd expect. The portion is pretty generous and it comes with 3 big slices of french toast. + OG Scramble: Protein packed and so savory! We got hash browns and toast with it so that it was really a full meal. This is the kind of place where the food and ambiance assuage the diner in regards to the surrounding area (freeway overpass/autobody shop/business park bleakness) and is unexpectedly hemmed in by raised planter boxes of various succulents and flowers, serenaded by birdsong, awning wide enough to comfortably shade outside diners and visibly improve what was possibly a former Taco Bell location. your eyes are spellbound by the door sized window that showcases all the donuts and always sold-out apple fritters at its entrance. the menu's a bit daunting and may be all over the place but it has just enough to please everybody. on my initial visit, I tried the chicken apple sausage hash roofed over by some over-easy eggs and sliced up sourdough bread. the yolk over the nicely seasoned and gently wilted spinach infused hash made for some unabashed good eatin' and the luscious blueberry fritter was the ideal post-meal treat. the next visit I gorged on the 'hipsterito'---their version of a veggie burrito made of grilled mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, eggs, hash brown & a mildly spicy 'hula' sauce. it won't make anyone forget the much heralded burritos 20 some odd miles up north nor the ones in the RWC but it can stand up well enough on its own and for a breakfast/brunch option, ain't nothin wrong with that. even the ube cake donut was just rich enough to warrant a cup of coffee. The most ironic thing, you're named apple fritter but don't have any apple fritters. It is really really ridiculous that 1. they don't have a separate line for if you only want donuts 2. No sign that tells you what they're out of. We waited about 25 min in line only to find out that they had no fritters, and we weren't at the front yet either. Seriously for a place that has you order and pay before seating, SO SLOW. They can learn a thing or two from Crepevine who offers the same type of service but moves extremely fast. I came to this breakfast lunch place a couple years back and I really enjoyed their breakfast plate, but I was a little underwhelmed with the apple fritter since there was not a lot of apple and it was really sweet. However, I wanted to give it another shot so I came here with my friend and I really enjoyed the breakfast sandwich with the hashbrowns that I got. There was a lot of flavor and the food came out really fast. I also ordered the blueberry crumble doughnut and a banana fritter. Both donuts were amazing and I would definitely order the blueberry donut here again! Last week, my son and I offered to treat my son's co-worker to breakfast on the co-worker's last day at work. The co-worker selected Apple Fritter for our breakfast. I had dined at Apple Fritter a couple of times in the past, and each time I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. So, I was looking forward to a great breakfast. Apple Fritter did not disappoint. Everything ordered was delicious. A word about Apple Fritter... it is a popular breakfast destination. The food is tasty and the portions generous... and the restaurant has a genuine, easy-going vibe. While we waited for our selections, a group of retired gents were having their regular breakfast meeting at a table across the dining area. They appeared to be right at home. Customers coming in to pick up take-out orders would pause to chat with the restaurant's staff. It's a friendly place. On this day, it was raining. That might have kept some folks away, but that meant we had no problem getting a desirable table. With quality menu items like Westcoast Wrapper and Hipsterito... Apple Fritter can get busy. My son's co-worker ordered the Breakfast Sandwich. It is not a regular eggy sandwich on a bun. This sandwich features juicy bacon, arugula, tomatoes, and a garlic & mayo dressing. It was described as "Eggcellent!" The Breakfast Sandwich was accompanied by more tater tots than the law probably allows. For French Toast lovers, the Fritter's Tooth Fairy French Toast meal will satisfy any craving for fine French cuisine. Well, maybe not, but a generous helping of scrambled eggs and choice bacon as sides will keep you going well beyond lunchtime. I ordered the Brunchurrito. The combination of bell peppers, hashbrowns, black beans, salsa, and sour cream with some chicken apple sausage in the mix were prepared to perfection. I took photos of our plates before we started eating. When we finished, there was nothing left to photograph. I heartily recommend Apple Fritter for breakfast. What an interesting vibe. Apple fritter is an institution of Foster City. With the delicious food, to the obscure decorations like the Keanu Reeves cutout above the water. Everything here was so interesting. We ordered the banana fritter, which like any fritter was delicious the first few bites but then got too sweet too quick, however it did have the perfect texture. We also ordered the brunchurrito with chicken apple sausage, which was perfect, no notes. Everything here was great and it really is such an interesting vibe to sit in there and enjoy the morning. read more

3.5 for food, rounded up to 4. I really want to like this place, but each visit has left me a little underwhelmed :'(. I'm a big fan of diners so maybe I just haven't picked the right menu items yet. Went on a Sunday morning and there was a line that moved pretty quickly. Overall, good vibes! Most recently, I tried the chorizo Instagrammable sandwich and the Gilroy burger. Unfortunately, neither hit the mark. The sandwich's flavor profile didn't quite come together for me and the burger meat was on the dry side. If I give this spot another chance, I'll probably lean toward their sweeter options and try the French toast or pancakes. Hope those are more promising! read more

Parking lot is medium sized and a little tight. You line up and order at the front. The line was a little out the door on a Sunday afternoon but not bad at all. Once you pay, it's open seating inside or outside. The drink menu is posted on the wall above the cashier. The egg scramble #3 and Bird's nest were quite flavorful. Ask for salsa in a cup and it adds to the flavor of the eggs, hash browns and sour dough toast immensely. The coconut ube donut looked great in the window. I totally forgot to try an apple fritter. We got here at 8:45am on a Saturday. There wasn't a line but it quickly got busy as we were ordering. We were greeted with many delicious donut options on our left and began ordering too many. Menus are available up front. You order at the window then find a table. We were lucky and there were plenty of tables to choose from (i know this isn't always the case based on other reviews). My husband's OG scramble was delicious and such a huge portion! It all was cooked well and had great flavors. My kids got the pancake with eggs and bacon. I was shocked by how big the pancake was and how much eggs and bacon they got. I got the pancake plate and it was basically like the kids meal but more bacon and an extra pancake. Been to Apple Fritter dozens of times at this point and finally decided to leave a review after my most recent visit! Quality, service, and ambiance are consistent. Food: Bird's Nest Since I usually come here after going to the gym, this has been my go-to plate because it's packed with protein and always consistent! Ground beef, sautéed onions, melted cheese, and hash browns - obviously it won't have the most dynamic flavor, but they season well and serve big portions! For the price, this is the most bang for your buck considering most brunch places don't give as much but charge more. Definitely need to try the pastries at some point! Service: No matter how busy this place gets, which is BUSY, the food always comes out quickly and they have never forgotten to give me cutlery. Additionally, they always ask if I need anything else before taking my order number away. Love the service here and hope they get the recognition they deserve! Water is self-serve and they have condiments on every table. Ambiance: The establishment is eclectic for sure. The interior is a mixture of paintings, cat decor, trinkets, and a cardboard cut-out of Keanu Reeves. There is an old TV hanging in one of the corners of the restaurant that plays cartoons from the 90s (think Looney Tunes). I would say they make good use of the space as there's an ample amount of indoor seating available despite being small. There are a few outdoor benches in the event that the indoor seating is full. Parking: My only pain-point!! The parking lot is small, so it's usually difficult to get a spot within the premises of the restaurant. I'm assuming that most of the kitchen staff take the parking, rightfully so, but it does contribute to this problem. You can park down the street in one of the nearby neighborhoods, but you will have to do a little walking. Tips: (1) If you want parking on premises, avoid busy times (10am-11am) if possible (2) The restaurant only accepts take-out orders after 1:30pm.
