I, as a 5th generation Japanese restaurant owner in Tokyo, former largest Indian cashewnut importer in Japan, I have an appreciation for Indian cuisine. I can guarantee you, Apna Chulha will serve you 1st class dining experience. You can be vegan, seafood lover, or meat diner, they have a range of options for you. I went on a weekday, at 10pm, it got filled with very happy Indian groups and families. That should give you a hint. If you had a difficult day, this is the place to go. Your heart will be filled with ease, compassion, harmony, and peace. The owners, the Mrs is from London, a daughter of Californian almond orchard investing family, took my orders and asked many questions and I gave her the freedom to select the dishes for me. The chief chef, the Mr. is from Punjab, India and started his business in London with his brothers. London Indian restaurants experience a high competition there. Their handsome, tall, polite, sharp 2nd son is there helping everyday. They used to own an integrity restaurant in Half Moon Bay. I am a former resident of top of El Granada Blvd. So, I know. Those are picky diners. This is not their first rodeo. They opened this restaurant a few years ago during the toughest time when people were closing restaurants and stores. It's a love and respect filled tight family. They love people and genuinely love serving the best food. I ordered about 8 people worth of food and it added up to be $201 USD. It was It was such a well presented dinner, I tipped $65. ($25 in 5 of my lucky money flowers, $40 in loose cash). It turned out $25 per person + tip. After my dinner, we talked about the food industry and what makes it continue for generations. The Mr. showed me his 30+ year old pan that he's treasured. I'll post the photo of the pan. It was bent with holes in it. He held the now retired pan like it was a baby. This is a high ceiling large restaurant, large windows, with elegant Indian decoration. It is deep, and wide. If you are claustrophobic, you will feel at ease in there. Their toilets are gender separated, large, beautiful, and clean. Any lady will feel comfortable to fix her makeup in there. Mothers will feel comfortable bringing her children to wash their hands. They have a large bar with TV screens which was not in use on the evening I dined. There are 2 seated tables next to the windows for perhaps a romantic dinner date. Stunning plates, proper cloth table napkins, and respectable silverware. You can have a family gathering, birthday, anniversary, corporate party, graduation party, come after a baseball game, just need to delight yourself alone for a breather, or a late night snack after checking into your hotel. Even if you are staying at the Fairmont, Ritz Carlton, Four Season, Intercontinental, Nikko, Hilton, don't go to Indian restaurants near your hotel. It's a 10-15 minute ride, reserve a table at Apna Chulha. At the end of your dinner, order their Samosas to take home. It will be worth your time. Samosas - burst with flavors in your mouth. It will get your appetite going. Spinach curry - deep green, thick with large chunks of cheese. Compliments all their naans. Garlic, Onion, Chili Naans - bite worthy, crispy on the outside, soft in the inside. Substantial flavors. Mango Chicken curry - Takes you to heaven. Lamb curry - the huge lamb chunks melt in your mouth Eggplant curry - fragrance of the eggplant spread in your mouth. Shrimp curry - Those are huge shrimps. I have a big mouth but one shrimp was so big, I couldn't add any naan nor rice with it. Plump, juicy and fresh shrimp. Fish tandoori - fresh, juicy, not over cooked. Mango Lassi - very thick with lots of mango Chai - not over sweetened. can taste all the spices clearly. I had one at the beginning and one at the end. read more

Before our visit, I emailed the restaurant to make a reservation and asked what would be served. The restaurant replied that the buffet would include Tandoori Chicken, Butter Chicken, Goat Curry, and Fish Pakora, while the vegetarian options rotate daily. They also mentioned that almost all the food is prepared mild. It was our usual get-together, and it was the first time for all of my friends to try the lunch buffet at this restaurant. Lunch buffet items included: * Paneer Makhani * Fish * Goat Curry * Butter Chicken * Tandoori Chicken * Aloo Gobi * Egg Roll * Rice * Naan * French Fries * And several other dishes Some of the buffet items didn't have name signs, so I wasn't always sure what I was eating. There were also a few items that weren't available when we first arrived, so we had to wait for them to be replenished. I liked the Tandoori Chicken and Butter Chicken. The Paneer Makhani was just okay. The vegetables were also just okay, and because there weren't any signs, I wasn't sure what some of the vegetable dishes were. The two desserts were a little too sweet for me. Although the restaurant mentioned that almost all the food was prepared mild, some of the dishes were actually spicy and not mild. Our group had mixed opinions about the buffet. A few of us, including myself, don't eat spicy food, so the difference in spice levels was noticeable. The restaurant also offered us free chai tea, which was a nice gesture. Overall, I would say the owner was trying his very best. He was the only person working in the restaurant during our visit. He was making the Tandoori Chicken, preparing and serving food behind the counter, bringing water and drinks, and bringing extra plates for the buffet. With one person handling so many things, it was understandable that some food needed time to be replenished. For $20, the all-you-can-eat buffet is a reasonable option, especially if you want to try several different Indian dishes. I hope they can add clear labels for the buffet items, indicate which dishes are spicy, and keep the food replenished more consistently as the restaurant gets busier. Apna Chulha makes some of the most delicious, balanced North Indian food I've had in SF. We came in for dinner last night and really liked the lamb rogan josh -- fragrant with spices and not too heavy/oily -- and the aloo saag. The saag had a super rich, thick texture, superior to a lot of the more watery stuff you might find elsewhere. I also loved the gol gappe, aka pani puri, little crisps that you fill with a potato-onion mixture and a pour of sweet and salty chutney water. I do wish they had a second green/herb water, like I've had elsewhere, but it's really no big deal. Service was friendly and gracious throughout, both from servers and some staff who seemed more like owners/managers (I should've asked!) The only downside is the portion for price, it's not the best value. But I understand based on the quality of the food. I'm excited to come back for the $20 lunch buffet. Also, I'm crossing my fingers that Apna Chulha sticks around for a long time. Business was looking quite slow on a Wed night, which is maybe expected but always hard to experience as a small biz owner. What a weird experience. Our waitress knew absolutely nothing. Every question we asked, she needed to ask another server, who also did not know much. Almost everything we ordered was forgotten: the beer, the main course. The bar tender walked by and I asked him about the beer and the server never put in the order. We did get our appetizers. After waiting a long time, the waiter brought over the dessert menu. But we hadn't gotten our main course! After making this clear we got it quickly. The food was ok. The naan was excellent (maybe the best I've ever had) but with the rest of the experience it is not worth coming back for. The restaurant was fairly empty when we arrived, but by the time we left, it was busier and had a number of occupied tables. The restaurant is spacious with plenty of seating and a separate bar area. The lunch buffet is $19.99 before tax & tip and seemed to be a pretty fair price. Now for the lunch buffet, there was a good variety of both meat and veggie curries along with basmati rice and a few appetizers (pakoras, etc). I enjoyed the tandoori chicken, butter chicken, dal and a veggie curry with spiced potatoes and peas. The dal had a nice flavor and a little kick and was a bit spicy, but paired well with the rice. The staff also brought over fresh naan, which was pretty good. The pakoras weren't too good, a little too salty, but the chutney helped. Customer service was friendly and attentive, with staff checking in occasionally on if we needed anything or wanted a refill of naan. I will say I assumed the chai was included with the buffet, and totally missed the signage that it was an extra cost. So, it was a slight surprise when we got the check. Otherwise, it was a pleasant dining experience and I was glad to find a Indian restaurant with a lunch buffet available on a Sunday, as most places only offer a lunch buffet during the workweek (Monday to Friday). Such a great price for an AYCE lunch buffet for only $19.99! The restaurant itself wasn't that busy when we went for a weekend lunch, but the food was so great I really hope they get more customers in the future! The tables are big and the space is very clean. The server was super friendly and checked back with us regularly. I absolutely loved their fish dish and chicken curries. The curry was very buttery and the fish was a bit crispy. I also enjoyed the chai which the sweetness went well with the savory entrees. It would be nicer if they put labels for each dish. My sister wanted to try this place after reading some good reviews and the food was solid. I will say that the service was really slow (maybe because the place is newer or it's understaffed?), so we had to constantly flag down a waiter to help us. Some of the items were also forgotten about, but they all eventually made it to our table after a few reminders. My favorite was the Punjabi fried rice since it was super fragrant and it went well with both the curries. The fish pakora was hot and fresh, but I was expecting it to be more crispy. We also tried the goat cheese naan since we hadn't had one before, but it really didn't taste like goat cheese and the flavor was very subtle in general. The restaurant did give us some complimentary desserts of gulab jamun and kheer, which was a nice way to end the night. Can't beat $19.95 for AYCE Indian food! (During lunch time). The buffet selection had my favorite dishes including daal, samosas, butter chicken, pakoras, goat curry and more! We were so glad they accommodated us last minute so thank you to the guy who took our order, helped make everything so fast and the young sardar who packed everything up with hand written notes on each to-go box. I haven't had much northern Indian food lately because my hankerings generally come in waves. I guess something was lapping my shoreline because a Yelp notice about this new spot intrigued me enough to pop over for lunch. It was formerly West of Pecos and a nice cavernous space to eat a chicken salad during COVID. Gratefully the new owners didn't crowd the space with more tables. I ordered the $7 Dal Soup and was immediately impressed that the potato chunks were not soggy. Came here with some friends to try this restaurant! We were looking to eat some Indian food, and saw this on Yelp! The ambiance is nice and I love the decorations! There were also additional decorations for Christmas, creating a festive feel. The service was a little slow, though likely because the restaurant was busy. Dropped by for a Sunday buffet. The restaurant is spacious and well lit, well decorated. There was one waiter who was very courteous and welcoming, and gave us free masala chai! The buffet overall has several good vegetarian and non-vegetarian options. My favorites were the chicken curry, potato-vegetable curry and naan. The owner offered us complimentary fresh naan and mango lassi, which were delicious to have with our meals. Another server constantly refilled our waters without us ever needing to ask. There is no shortage of good Indian options in the area, but where Apna Chulha shines is as a fancier, sit-down option with super affordable prices! Perfect for a date night or if you are just looking for a nicer place to grab a bite without feeling too stuffy. I tried their Chicken Biryani, Saag Paneer, and Fish Pakora. Everything was amply portioned, well-seasoned, and full of flavor. I think my favorite was the Saag Paneer...this is a simple dish that really comes down to the execution, and I think they nail it. The saag tasted earthy, and a touch creamy, with the perfect consistency that wasn't too thin or greasy. The biryani had a good ratio of chicken-to-rice, and I asked for "very spicy," which was balanced with the rest of the nuanced flavor and not overwhelming. It comes with a side of raita, which cut nicely through the heat. Both dishes were definitely more of a northern Indian/Pakistani-style, if that is your thing. Each was $16. The Fish Pakora was good, and also a great value at $11 (they use salmon!), but not my favorite overall. I think something to do with how they breaded it reminded me of chicken nuggets. Again, not bad, but not my preference. I would probably skip that next time. They are still in soft-opening right now, so some things may change, but I definitely want to return to try more of the menu, particularly the tandoori dishes. The owner also mentioned they will be adding pizzas in the coming months! Also, not sure if it will continue, but they offered a complimentary rice pudding dessert "sample" that was also delicious, just the right amount of salty/sweet to whet your appetite for more! You can tell they really care about the quality of their food here, and I'm happy to support a new small business as they bring an excellent option to an already culinary tour-de-force of a neighborhood! Wow I cannot say enough good things about this place! I was in town for the weekend and decided to visit Delores park. After a nice long day there, we were in search for some good food. This place came highly recommended and for good reason! Best Indian food I've ever had. The owner was an absolute joy to speak to as well, a very humble gentleman! It is also walking distance from Delores park, it's about a 9 min walk. The ambiance of the restaurant is very welcoming! As soon as you arrive you are greeted with a smile! There is a lot of space if you decide you want to have a dinner for a special event. The portions are shareable. They also have a full bar! I was sad I wasn't in town for a longer period of time, I will definitely be visiting again the next time I'm in town! Butter chicken: 10/10 Perfectly cooked boneless chicken and the sauce was to die for! Side of rice: 8/10 I loved the spice to it, but wish it was a little more of the moist side. The minute we walked in the door were greeted like family. There's a nice full bar, large seating areas with a beautiful open kitchen. We had seen Facebook and InstaGram posts about this place and knew what we wanted to try. We had the Naag Paneer, Mango Chicken and the best lamb chops I've ever had. The garlic naan and cheese naan topped off our amazing meal. I highly recommend this place! I can't wait to come back for the daily buffet. read more

Great Indian lunch buffet in the Mission. Every dish was fresh and delicious. Butter chicken and the samosas were favorites. Staff was attentive and friendly. We were the only diners!
