As a longtime Boulderite, it makes me happy when new little businesses spring up in odd corners of the wider area, like Gunbarrel -- which now has a sort of young, cool vibe. I had three fun nights out at this new café in Gunbarrel, including one evening in the convenient, clean COVID-era "igloo". Those times were with women friends, & it was great: good value for the money, really excellent service & yummy food. Sadly, three times was the charm, & the fourth didn't go so well. I took my husband & super-foodie son back, & the service was pretty much a mess, the food seemed rather over-priced for the quality, (raised their prices?), & generally did not impress. Sad! HOWEVER, I complained to the management & they were very polite about it all. (We'd been charged for a drink that never came & they immediately refunded it.) The two wait staff were very sweet, just super inexperienced, and given how hard it's been for people to find wait staff these days, I hate to complain about them. I live in South Boulder, and my friend lives in Longmont, so Aperitivo appeared to be a good meeting spot -- geographically -- for us to have breakfast. Parking was a little confusing at first, but after reading signs, I realized you can park just about anywhere in the area between the hours of 8 AM and 6 PM. I had read reviews on Google about the atmosphere being a little cold. The building that Aperitivo is located in is very modern -- lots of steel and windows -- but I didn't feel like the place was unwelcoming or frigid. The piano and some upholstered chairs help to make it feel like a place you'd want to hang out for a long period of time! After looking through the menu, I decided to try the congee, which I've never had before. It sounded a bit strange (savory rice pudding with egg/green onion/garlic/mushroom), but the waitress assured me that on a day like today (lots of snow), it would be a welcome breakfast. Boy, was she right! The congee feels like a hug on a cold day ... lots of different textures and flavors, and it's served nice and hot. It was perfect for a savory breakfast lover like me! I got it with chicken, but the waitress suggested adding bacon instead (which also would have been good). I can highly recommend that unique dish! All in all, it was a five star experience, and a neat little place that's worth going to if you find yourself in Gunbarrel. Ok, so we tried it for the first time this past week for dinner, and we loved it. I read the reviews first and didn't expect too much. We really need good places in Gunbarrel and this is one that I want to see stick around! First, be sure to give it a chance, your first opinion may change. Walking in we were greeted by a young man, who does not really smile much. But he was very nice, it felt very "french bistro" to me.. We *almost* didn't stay to eat it felt so strange at first, with the walking up into an apartment complex and there was only one table of people there. By the end of the meal, I still haven't stopped thinking about their food! My kids loved it too, my 13yo daughter had the chicken and she has allergies, so Miguel came over to see what she could have and said the ragout would work - glad she got it too, it was wonderful and the chicken itself was perfect. My 15yo son got breakfast for dinner (the website said all day breakfast & brunch, but you have ask for that menu) with an egg croissant sandwich and a nice salad that he thought was great. I ordered the charcuterie with the cheese board combined a little bit and had that for dinner with some wine - it was also excellent mixes and great baguette slices, just the perfect amount. Another couple came in when we were there eating, and they were able to have a sweet romantic meal back in a corner, so it accommodates that too. The decor, someone commented on in a review, and they have made changes, it was warmed up with more home touches. When we left in contrast to when we got there, we felt comfortable, like they were old friends (Miguel and the waiter), satisfied and happy like we had a nice meal at home (they cook in the same room so you can watch, which I actually like). We shared the lemon tart dessert with the meringue, house made whipped cream and lemon zest - really have to get this again... In fact we are planning my next birthday there with friends! We have ordered to-go several times since Covid - and always love their food. Wanted to give a quick shout out as we had a great outdoor dining experience last night! They had heaters and igloos - felt safe and enjoyed a wonderful dinner under the stars. Had an amazing cocktail - they have a mixologist on-site on the weekends with rotating cocktail menu. Went in for breakfast after a run with a group of friends. Their vegan/vegetarian selection is very slim. I ordered the portabello sandwich on wheat. It was served with white bread and it was difficult to find the portabello inside. Small sandwich, a small helping of fruit, it just looked sad....all for full price. My friends split an omelette and they will be sure to be hungry in the next half an hour the omelette was pitifully small. One of my friends ordered a mocha latte and didn't get the mocha. Overpriced for the amount of food you get, they need to step it up. Right in the middle of my meal the man came by for all of us to pay on a square, we hadn't even finished our meal! Food was solid, service exceptional. My wife and I visited recently on a shopping trip to Boulder. After the Macy's trip, swang through here on way home. Atmosphere and overall quality was such that it really put us in the romantic mood...so much so that we decided to make a trip to Victoria's Secret after and get a hotel room rather than driving home. Only downside is the VS cashier told me I looked jittery and likely didn't trust my russian accesnt so she made me verify my identity due to how much scum-sucking thievery and fraud exists these days. So finally tried this place out and the food was yummy! I had the mushroom spinach Benedict w Thai Hollandaise and it was delish. I'm a cook myself, so sometimes I'm not easily impressed, but I really appreciated the unique items on their menu, which reflected an Asian influence. My husband had the chicken pesto sandwich, which he described as good but not super knock your socks off. Service was good. My reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the atmosphere is kind of weird....Kind of felt like we were sitting in an airport. It's funny how paint color and furniture choice make a big difference in how a place just feels. This place felt kind of cold, instead of the warm, cozy, welcoming atmosphere you desire in a cafe. I want to love this place, and I almost always enjoy their food. But they need to get a new ventilation system, because the entire restaurant smells of the kitchen, and you leave smelling like that, too. I have decided I can now only go in warm weather when we can eat outside on the patio. Otherwise, it's hard to sit through the meal before the smell of frying foods makes you sick, and your clothes end up reeking. In terms of the food: the small plates are tasty, creative, and fresh, as are the salads. I made the mistake of going for the scallop special tonight, which was $24 for four scallops on top of a huge mound of rather bland and overcooked risotto. A better plate would have been five scallops, half the amount of risotto, and some greens. read more

Pretty good. It has it's ups and downs. First the good. Service was kind and warm. Perfect. Piano bar, may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I like it. The BLT was really good. They used the right kind of sandwich bacon (thinner sliced, different taste, etc...), the lettuce was fresh, the tomato was fresh, and the sourdough bread was good. Establishment looked clean. Onto the things that lost some stars. Service, despite being nice, was kinda slow and erratic. They wanted me to sit down to be served, then took a little too long to get to me despite no one else needing to be served at the time. Then when I paid, it's a Square-like unit on an iPad. Which is something you do if people pay up front. It's really awkward at table side to do a Square unit. The advantage of a Square-like unit is to either have mobility behind a bar, or to rapidly take orders quickly without the huge overhead of a traditional CC system. It's not so you can take the iPad to every table. The tea was underwhelming. Asked for herbal tea, he repeated green tea, I said herbal tea again. He nodded. Comes back, gives me green tea. On the menu, if it says there are both herbal and green tea, then why did I get green tea? I didn't make a big deal about it because I like green tea. The temperature of the water was far too hot to steep green tea in. Green tea is commonly steeped in much lower temperature water than black tea for instance. It's more delicate. The smallest size was huge. I emphasized small 12 oz. He gave me a huge paper cup full of over-hot water with one teabag in it. The result was not enough tea-to-water ratio. It's just not very well thought through for a place that seems to emphasize their hot and cold drinks so heavily on the menu. Location is really really weird, but maybe this is a sort of investment into the future. It gives you the vibe like you have to be a resident in the apartments to go there. Parking right out in front of the establishment is reserved for people that are looking to rent a home there. You have to park further away, and hope they don't have a permit system or something. It's a bit off-putting. Wasn't sure if the apartment company would call the cops on my motorcycle being parked out there. The furniture felt both cheap and unsuited for use in a restaurant. It looked and felt like something out of someone's home who strictly orders everything from CB2. The end tables they use as tables with the glass top, really unpleasant to hear anything be placed on them. It kinda hurts the experience. The difference in height of all the chairs in the layout, the end tables are too small to fit two people's plates, but they have 2 chairs by them. Just bizarre design decisions that draw away from the experience. The piano was too loud because they don't have sound dampening combined with a high ceiling. High ceilings are trendy because it makes it feel more spacious, but you have to offset it with some kind of sound dampening or it just is unpleasantly loud. Things that aren't affecting the score at all, but little notes, things I was thinking about while there. Everything on the menu feels kinda weak for lunch. The breakfast stuff looks better. They say they do tapas, but the lunch menu didn't reflect that. I think having 3 different menus in a place this small is overly ambitious, sounds like too much overhead for food storage and quality control. But again, my BLT was good, so maybe they've figured it out somehow. The specials shown on their Facebook page look interesting, but there's a bit of a bait and switch if you come here for lunch expecting something like that. Is it a bar, a tea/coffee shop, breakfast/brunch place, tapas dinner? The concept seems really all over the place. My summary, decent place with good potential, but Gunbarrel still needs something truly great. It's severely lacking there. read more

Excellent lunch! These people like food and pay attention to it, not just to business. Soups made here, the noodles had not been soaking and deteriorating in the soup for days, the vegetables were plentiful, the broth was rich. The black bean soup was great according to my foodie friend. My sandwich was warm, and on a BLT? There was green, something much better than one wilted piece of lettuce. And each ingredient was good. This restaurant is truly a gem. It's very quaint and the staff is amazing. The food is incredible. I had the salmon and creme brulee. Delicious! My daughter loved the steak and my husband and other daughter loved the pastas. On top of all that, they are trying to help out furloughed federal employees. I thought the harvest veggie salad was on my top 10 meals in Boulder, but I just had the arugula portobello sandwich and have pushed that ahead of the salad. Penne Primavera had a scattering of small veggies barely able to see and only difference was the constant taste of broccoli. Fettuccine Fungi-- if they roasted the mushrooms in olive oil and spices to get flavors activated and much less sauce, imagine it could be better. Hard bread had no flavor/over toasted, drinks ok. We went here for dinner, and got the truffle fries, caesar salad, pan seared half chicken, and a couple beers. Everything was delicious. The chicken was saltier than I was used to, but I enjoyed it. The atmosphere is nice, especially with the baby grand piano. The waitress was attentive. My only complaint was that the kitchen is in the same room as the seating (since it is set up like a coffee shop), so we left the place smelling like cooking oil. We were VERY impressed with Apertivo! It is a cute, little spot with a nice and relaxing atmosphere, wonderful service and delicious food! Their lunch and dinner menus are very good! We had the nicest server and the talented chef even came out to greet us during dinner with some truffle fries (Yum!)! We cannot say enough good things about Apertivo! It already has all the elements needed for a great restaurant, and then you learn that they offered free meals to the workers (and their families) who were furloughed during the government shutdown and struggling without paychecks.
